White Sox Get Past Twins; Advance To Postseason

CHICAGO (AP)—Jim Thome hit a solo home run in the 7th inning and John Danks earned the victory on the mound as the Chicago White Sox advanced to the postseason with a 1-0 win over the Minnesota Twins Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field. Bobby Jenks earned the save for Chicago with a perfect ninth, while centerfielder Brian Anderson ended the game with a catch of the Twins’ Alexi Casilla’s blooper. The White Sox will face upstart Tampa Bay Thursday in the ALDS.

BEAVER, Utah (AP)—Chamaya Kia amassed a hat trick, while Stacy and Alicia Roberts each added two assists as the Beaver Lady Beavers crushed the North Sevier Wolves, 9-0 Tuesday in Region 13 soccer action.
MOAB, Utah (AP)—Drew Camps posted a hat trick, and Athena Hawks added two goals as the Grand Lady Red Devils smoked the Richfield Lady Wildcats, 7-2 in Region 13 soccer action Tuesday. Chenelle Busk had both goals for Richfield.
EPHRAIM, Utah (AP)—Kaitlyn Pogroszewski scored the sole goal of the game as the Manti Lady Templars surged past the South Sevier Lady Rams, 1-0 Tuesday in Region 13 soccer action.
GUNNISON, Utah (AP)—Maira Alcala and Keri Brunson amassed two goals apiece to lead the Millard Lady Eagles to a 6-2 win over the Gunnison Lady Bulldogs in Region 13 soccer action Tuesday.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Utah (AP)—Shelby Earl and Laurel Bailey combined for 22 kills as the North Sanpete Lady Hawks swept the Emery Lady Spartans, 3-0 Tuesday in Region 8 volleyball action.
MONROE, Utah (AP)—Kayla King amassed 12 kills and three blocks, while Kaili King and Sydney Mills combined on 26 assists as the South Sevier Lady Rams made quick work of the North Sevier Lady Wolves in a 3-0 sweep in Region 12 volleyball action Tuesday.
BEAVER, Utah (AP)—The Beaver Lady Beavers used 20 kills and 19 aces to down the Millard Lady Eagles, 3-1 Tuesday in Region 13 volley action.
KANAB, Utah (AP)—Megan Robinson had 18 kills, while Autumn Murphy chipped in with 13 kills and 14 assists as the Parowan Lady Rams outlasted the Kanab Cowgirls, 3-2 in Region 13 volleyball action Tuesday. Savannah Cooper had 12 kills and 12 blocks, while Keira Robinson amassed 16 digs for Kanab in defeat.

Fremont Indian State Park celebrates native plants

(SEVIER) – The Fremont Chapter of the Utah Native Plant Society is celebrating their native plant garden at the Fremont Indian State Park this Saturday. Chairperson, Janett Warner, says the day will be full of various activities. Warner invites the public to come to the State Park and enjoy the day. The hours are from noon to 5pm on Saturday.
Voter Registration Deadline

(Manti) Election day may still be more than a month away, but for unregistered voters in Sanpete county time is running out. The deadline to register by mail is Monday October 6th. Voter registrations must be postmarked by or received by the Clerks office on October 6th, but for those registering in person the deadline is October 20th. Early voting will also begin on October 21st at the Clerks office and continue Monday through Friday until October 31st. You must be registered to vote before October 6th to vote early. Absentee ballots are also available until election day. You can contact the Clerks office for details.
UDOT advises on road closures

(RICHFIELD) – The Utah Department of Transportation has announced several road closures throughout South-Central Utah due to road construction. UDOT Public Involvement Manager, Kevin Kitchen, says workers are pumping concrete Monday through Thursday from 7am to 6:30pm for the roadway construction and pedestrian/bike path between Sevier and Joseph and the road could be closed for up to three hours each day throughout the week. Kitchen says that Glenwood Road is undergoing flood damage repairs and is being paved in spots. Expect delays on one-way lanes. Also, Highway 89 from Marysvale Canyon to I-70, paving is being done throughout the week and 10-15 minute delays are be expected and SR-14 to Hatch in Southern Utah is being paved through October. Small delays are expected on one-way lanes. In Sanpete County, Keller Lane to the Airport Road is being finished and temporary delays can be expected. UDOT advises travelers to avoid construction delays by planning trips ahead of time.
Local advisors discuss financial bailout

(RICHFIELD) – Several local bankers and investment advisors gathered together to discuss the impact of the national financial crisis facing taxpayers. Zion’s Bank Communications Director, Rob Brough, said those in the financial world are in unchartered territory but this not the time to panic. Financial consultant, Roger Bird of Richfield, said since the financial crisis involves all of us, we need to stick together and weather it out. Rick Robinson, Zion’s Bank Richfield Branch Manager, said people are angry because taxpayer money is going towards paying huge bonuses to those who have benefited from the crisis. All three agreed that the financial crisis will work itself out and the government bailout will be scrutinized to get the best deal for taxpayers.
Aurora man escapes injury in I-70 accident

(SIGURD) – An Aurora man escaped serious injury in a collision on I-70 early Friday morning. A UHP report said that at about 1am, Martin Garcia was traveling eastbound in a Ryder rental truck, when he lost a front tire on the highway near the Sigurd exit. 22-year old, Seth Gurney of Aurora, was behind Garcia pulling a trailer with horses and cows in it, when he hit the tire and drove off the left shoulder of the road. Gurney’s trailer jack-knifed and rolled on the driver’s side. No animals were injured in the accident and Gurney was treated at the scene and released. The sheriff’s report had no information on the condition of Garcia.
Elk hunter accidently shoots guide

(KOOSHARAEM) – An Indiana man hunting elk near Koosharem two weeks ago accidently shot and wounded a hunting guide. A sheriff’s report stated that on Sept. 18, 27- year old, Nick Frohardt of Sac City, IA. was helping 64-year old, Fred Souders of Holland, IN., hunt elk northeast of Koosharem Reservoir about a mile south of Nowhere Flat, west of Boobe Hole. Souders had shot an elk in the area with a .300 Winchester Magnum but the elk was not dead and had started to get up. Souders was loading his gun when it accidently went off and struck Frohardt in the lower leg. Sevier County Deputies and Search and Rescue were called to the scene in an area accessible only by horseback or ATV and transported Frohardt to a waiting Air-Med helicopter. He was taken to a hospital up north where his leg was amputated. There’s no report on whether Souders would be charged in the incident.
