Ramirez' Grand Slam Keeps White Sox Alive

Published on September 29, 2008 at 11:07PM

CHICAGO (AP)—Alexei Ramirez amassed an MLB rookie record with his fourth grand slam of the season and the Chicago White Sox lived to play another day by smacking the Detroit Tigers, 8-2 Monday at U.S. Cellular Field. Ramirez’ heroics were part of a five-run 6th inning which put the Tigers on the skids and kept the White Sox’ postseason hopes alive. To advance to the playoffs, though, Chicago must defeat division rival Minnesota tomorrow, and the Twins are 10-8 this season at U.S. Cellular Field, so the White Sox have their work cut out for them as 10 teams this season have previously failed to beat three consecutive teams on three straight days. That’s precisely what Chicago must do to keep their championship dreams alive.

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Jeff Reed, the NFL’s field goal percentage leader from last season nailed a 46-yard field goal in overtime and the Pittsburgh Steelers outlasted the Baltimore Ravens, 23-20 Monday at Heinz Field. Early in the second half, the Ravens held a 13-3 lead, as quarterback Joe Flacco (16 of 31, 192 yards, TD) had arguably the best performance of his rookie season thus far while the vaunted Baltimore defense held Pittsburgh to 69 yards. Nevertheless, the Steelers soon caught fire as signal-caller Ben Roethlisberger (14 of 24 191 yards TD, INT) hit receiver Santonio Holmes on a 38-yard scoring strike, while 15 seconds later, Flacco fumbled and linebacker LaMarr Woodley returned it seven yards for another score. However, the Ravens hung around and late in the 4th Quarter, Flacco drove the offense 76 yards in nine plays, while fullback Le’Ron McClain scored from two yards out. Although Baltimore got the ball first in overtime, the Steelers defense stiffened and after Roethlisberger hit tailback Mewelde Moore on a key 21-yard gain, Reed’s field goal won the game. The win improved the Steelers to 3-1, on the season, while Baltimore fell to 2-1. Pittsburgh next faces Jacksonville Sunday, while the Ravens will host the Tennessee Titans Sunday.
