Mariners Sink Yankees in Seattle

Published on September 05, 2008 at 11:51PM

SEATTLE (AP)—Brandon Morrow came within two hits of a no-hitter in his first major league start and the Seattle Mariners crippled the New York Yankees’ already remote playoff chances with a 3-1 victory Friday at Safeco Field. Yuniesky Betancourt, Kenji Johjima, and Miguel Cairo each had an RBI for the Mariners as they built a 3-0 lead through four innings. From there, Morrow’s solid pitching enabled Seattle to hold on for only their 55th win of the season against 85 losses. Although the Yankees are still 75-66 on the season with the loss, the chances are remote for them to make the postseason at this point as they are 8 ½ games behind the hated Red Sox for the American League wild card berth with only 21 games left in the season. In other MLB action Friday, Oakland blasted Baltimore, 11-2, Toronto surged past Tampa Bay, 6-4, Cincinnati smacked the Chicago Cubs, 10-2, Philadelphia blanked the New York Mets, 3-0, Atlanta doubled up Washington, 10-5, Milwaukee edged San Diego, 3-2 in 11 innings, Boston pasted Texas, 8-1, Cleveland stymied Kansas City, 9-3, Minnesota trounced Detroit, 10-2, the Chicago White Sox steamrolled the Los Angeles Angels, 10-2, Florida gashed St. Louis, 4-1 in 11 innings, Colorado ousted Houston, 5-3, the Los Angeles Dodgers pounded Arizona, 7-0, and Pittsburgh humbled San Francisco, 7-0.

State attorneys and conservationists battle over roads

Published on September 05, 2008 at 09:06AM

(SALT LAKE CITY) – Juab County Attorneys and the Utah Attorney General’s Office are upset with the Federal Government for allowing conservation groups to have a seat at the table in a lawsuit over ownership of roads in wilderness study areas. U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell this week granted the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, the Sierra Club and The Wilderness Society the right to be defendants in the lawsuit in which the state and county seek ownership of three roads in Utah’s Deep Creek Mountains. The state and county are disappointed in the ruling because they say that conservationists have no claim of ownership at all but Campbell agreed with conservationist’s arguments that they cannot rely on federal land agencies to adequately represent their defense of wilderness in cases involving a Civil War-era law entitled, Revised Statute 2477. The three roads are known as, Tom’s Creek, Granite Canyon and Trout Creek canyon roads. The conservationists claim that the roads are not part of the state’s highway transportation system and therefore, cannot be accessed but state and county attorneys say that SUWA is assigning a modern definition to a 19-century highway statute. They say that there were no paved roads in 1866 and that highways back then were wagon trails and are currently, noticeable. The state says they have no desire to pave the roads and they should remain open for Snake Valley residents who have used them for generations to reach favorite camping or picnicking areas.
