Royals Pound Rockies In KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Alex Gordon hit a seventh inning two-run homer and Zack Greinke amassed 10 strikeouts as the Kansas City Royals bested the Colorado Rockies, 7-3 Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium in interleague play. Despite their record of 35-43, Kansas City has feasted on their National League foes thus far on the season as they are 11-3 in interleague play, the best in the majors. The game took a scary turn in the second inning when umpire Brian O’Nora was hit in the head by the bat of Kansas City’s Miguel Olivo (who incidentally had a fourth inning RBI single which gave the Royals a 1-0 lead). O’Nora was later taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he received further evaluation. Additionally, Mike Aviles was solid for the Royals as he amassed two hits and an RBI and has hit .352 since being promoted from the minors by Kansas City on May 29. The loss dropped the Rockies to 32-46 on the season, which has been a far cry since their berth in the World Series last season. In National League play Tuesday, Milwaukee edged Atlanta, 4-3, and in other interleague action, Boston surged past Arizona, 5-4, San Francisco handled Cleveland, 3-2, St. Louis doubled up Detroit, 8-4, Pittsburgh smoked the New York Yankees, 12-5, Toronto decimated Cincinnati, 14-1, the Los Angeles Angels torched Washington, 8-3, Seattle shellacked the New York Mets, 11-0, Tampa Bay stymied Florida, 6-4, Baltimore outlasted the Chicago Cubs, 7-5, Houston tripped up Texas, 4-3, Oakland snuck past Philadelphia, 5-2, the Chicago White Sox hammered the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-1, and Minnesota gashed San Diego, 3-1.

Primary Election Results

(Manti) South Sanpete County residents voted in favor of bonding for new schools by a margin of nearly two thirds in yesterday’s primary. The final vote was 1,436 in favor of the bond and 498 against. In other races, Spencer Cox edged Dwight Inouye by thirty seven votes in a Republican runoff for county commission. Those numbers could change though as absentee and provisional ballots are counted. For South Sanpete School Board, Nancy Jensen had 214 votes, Kathy Frandsen had 172, and Sheila Bringhurst had 50. In the North Sanpete School Board race, Roy Ellefsen took 115 votes, Rich Brotherson had 87, and Dale Barker had 50. Sanpete Residents voted for Jason Chaffetz over Chris Cannon by 59 votes, and Richard Ellis over Mark Walker by nearly two hundred votes.

Elderly couple escape injury

(KOOSHAREM) – An elderly Salt Lake couple escaped serious injury in a rollover on SR-24 Saturday afternoon. A UHP report said that 80-year old, Nancy Eisenman was traveling eastbound at about 2:30pm, 13 miles north of Koosharem, when she left the right side of the highway in a 1999 Ford Escort, overcorrected, moved back across lanes of travel and overturned on the left shoulder of the road. Eisenman sustained possible injuries but her passenger, 79-year old, George Eisenman, was not injured. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts and were transported to the Sevier Valley Hospital.

Illinois man crashes motorcycle on I-70

(SALINA) – An Illinois man sustained multiple injuries on I-70 east of Salina last night when his motorcycle blew a rear tire. According to a UHP report, 22-year old, Andrew Johnson was traveling westbound on a 1990 BMW motorcycle at about 6:45pm when the accident happened. His motorcycle turned onto its right side, sliding from the lanes of travel. Johnson was wearing a helmet and was transported to the Sevier Valley Hospital.

Ham Radio Demonstration

(Fairview) Amateur Ham Radio seems to be picking up steam throughout the country as natural disasters continue to show vulnerabilities in the mainstream communication systems. A demonstration of Ham Radio capabilities will take place this weekend on at the top of Skyline Drive above Fairview. The Utah DX Association will be showing how the technology works, and will also provide information on how to obtain a private Ham Radio license. There are around six hundred and fifty thousand Ham operators in the US, and over two million around the world providing a reliable communication network when disasters strike. Motorcyclist and deer collide near Koosharem

(KOOSHAREM) – A Sandy motorcyclist sustained injuries after hitting a deer near Koosharem Saturday afternoon. A UHP report stated that 62-year old, Nathaniel Mitchell was traveling southbound on his 2003 BMW motorcycle on SR-62, when he collided with the deer about a mile south of Koosharem. Mitchell was thrown off the motorcycle on the right side of the highway and his motorcycle came to rest in the roadway. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and was transported to the Sevier Valley Hospital with some injuries.

Sevier County farmers battle grasshoppers

(RICHFIELD) – Sevier County crop producers are facing grasshopper and weevil infestations early in the season. USU Extension Agent, David Drake, said the problem isn’t widespread but the northern part of the county is seeing some problems. Drake said that if farmers see infestations, there are agricultural programs that can help get rid of the pests. He also said that the cutting of first crop hay is behind two weeks because of a dry spring and the crop yield has been reduced. Drake said that in spite of warmer weather, the local area is short on water because of cool weather a couple of weeks ago that slowed mountain snow melt.

Corn Creek begins rehabilitation

ESCALANTE) – Rehabilitation work has begun on the first wildfire of the season. On Sunday, fire managers took over the Corn Creek Fire, 11 miles west of Escalante. The fire scorched nearly 2300 acres and was fully contained last Friday. Forest managers have begun the Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation including specialists in engineering, vegetation, wildlife, hydrology, soil, cultural and recreation resources. These experts will help to stabilize and prevent further threats to life or property resulting from the effects of the fire. The Main Canyon road is now open but other forest roads will remain closed until management teams are out of the area.
