Padres Best Reds As Griffey Inches Closer To History

SAN DIEGO-Khalil Greene, Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff combined for four home runs as the San Diego Padres torched the Cincinnati Reds, 8-2 Thursday at Petco Park. Cincinnati took a 2-0 first inning lead on the 598th home run of Ken Griffey Jr.’s career, but from that time on, the Padres seized complete command, as the Reds dropped their fourth straight game. The win improved San Diego to 18-31 on the season, which is still among major league baseball’s worst records. In other MLB action Thursday, Detroit smacked Seattle, 9-2, Texas outlasted Minnesota, 8-7 in 10 innings, Boston outgunned Kansas City, 11-8, Atlanta doubled up the New York Mets, 4-2, the New York Yankees handled Baltimore, 2-1, Pittsburgh smoked Milwaukee, 8-4, Toronto handled the Los Angeles Angels, 4-3, Florida blanked Arizona, 4-0, Philadelphia overpowered Houston, 7-5, and the Chicago White Sox pasted Cleveland, 3-1.

Pistons Seize Home Court Advantage With Convincing Win Over Celtics

BOSTON-At long last the Boston Celtics’ dominance at home has come to an end. Now, they will have to win their first postseason game on the road if they are to advance to the NBA Finals. Richard Hamilton had 25 points and Chauncey Billups added 19 points and seven assists as the Detroit Pistons edged the Celtics, 103-97 Thursday at TD Banknorth Garden in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. After scoring only 18 points in the first quarter, the Pistons proceeded to score at least 25 points in all the other periods to explode offensively against the stifling Celtics defense. Paul Pierce had 26 points for the Celtics in the win, while Ray Allen busted out of a slump with 25 points. Kevin Garnett added 24 points and 13 rebounds in the loss for Boston. Game 3 is slated for Saturday evening at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit.

Weather determines campground openings

(RICHFIELD) – Campgrounds and roads on the Fishlake National Forest are slowly opening for the 2008 season after a snowy winter. Fishlake Spokesman, Jason Torgerson, said however, several campgrounds may not be accessible due to the recent storms. Officials were hoping the Monrovian Picnic Site and Gooseberry Campground in the Richfield Ranger District would be open by the Memorial Day weekend and are reminding recreationists that the weather determines when roads and campgrounds can be open and when. Torgerson said that campers should be ready for inclement weather and to take along plenty of gear to prepare for it.

Perfect Attendance

(Manti) A Manti High school senior has reach a goal that few others can claim. She has never missed a day of school in the last thirteen years. Kara Carlson has a perfect attendance record from kindergarten through high school and it all started with a challenge from her father. She says that on her first day of school her father told her about his perfect record while in junior high. He challenged her to match his three years. She says what started out as a simple challenge has turned into a habit. She partially accredits her success to a strong immune system which kept her healthy. Her advice to other students is follow her example. She says attending each day makes it easier to keep up with the work. Looking forward to college she says that she is determined to miss at least one day, if she can bring herself to.

Drug Arrests

(Fillmore) The Central Utah Narcotics Task Force and the Millard County Sheriff’s Office have made another round of drug arrests. Guadalupe Cruz, Raul R. Garcia, Kimberly F. Mitchell, Mark C. Mitchell, Debra V. Huntsman, and Raymond Dale Huntsman were all arrested on various drug related charges. All of those arrested are residents of Fillmore. Two others were arrested at an earlier date. Rafael Rios Garcia of Delta, and Michael Daron Smith of Fillmore were arrested on charges of distribution of a controlled substance in a drug free zone. The arrests follow a nine month investigation, and more arrests are expected to follow.

Sanpete men taken to hospital

(GUNNISON) – A Mayfield man had to be extricated from his vehicle after a crash involving an Axtell driver on Highway 89 Tuesday morning. According to a UHP report, at about 8:30am, 75-year old, Paul Christiansen of Mayfield, was traveling southbound in a 1999 Ford Taurus when he attempted to make a left turn at the junction to Mayfield and failed to yield to 73-year old, Roy Snelson of Axtell, driving a 2005 Kia Sedona. The report stated that Christiansen was not wearing a seat belt and was pinned in his vehicle until help could arrive. He sustained injuries and was transported to Gunnison Valley Hospital. Snelson was reported to have been wearing a seat belt and was also transported by ambulance to the Gunnison Valley Hospital with minor injuries. Christiansen was cited for failure to yield.
