BBB warning on college financial aid
Published on May 08, 2008 at 11:11AM
(SALT LAKE CITY) – The Utah Better Business Bureau is warning parents and students seeking financial aid for college, to be wary of misleading sales pitches given by Edifi College Financial Aid Services, of Albany, New York. BBB President, Jane Driggs, says the information they give you at a $900 price tag, is information you can get at no cost. Driggs said the the BBB has received complaints from parents and students that Edifi contacts them for a “free personal interview” preceded by a group seminar where the company talks about grants, scholarships and other financial assistance, then tries to sell them during the interview. She said for the $900, the company offers access to their website, fills out financial aid applications for students and provides other services, but no guarantee for financial aid. Driggs said consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with the service when they’ve tried to cancel the contract. She said that complaints to the BBB about these offers have increased 60% from 2005 to 2006 and are on a record pace for 2007. High school juniors and seniors across Utah have received an invitation to the interviews on May 10 and 11 in Salt Lake City.
