Weber State Lineman Goes #2 in Annual CFL Draft

TORONTO-Traditionally, many Utah collegiate football stars have found great success in the Great White North amid 110-yard fields and 55-yard lines such as Anthony Calvillo and Ben Cahoon. Wednesday afternoon, a Weber State standout received a chance to do likewise. Former Wildcats offensive lineman Dimitri Tsoumpas was drafted with the second overall pick of the CFL Draft by the Calgary Stampeders, while the Hamilton Tiger-Cats took Dylan Barker, a cornerback from the University of Saskatchewan with the first overall selection. Other draft picks from the Intermountain West region included Idaho tailback Rolly Lumbala who went ninth overall to British Columbia, Boise State offensive lineman Andrew Woodruff who went to the Montreal Alouettes at #12, and Woodruff’s teammate Jon Gott, who went to the Stampeders with the 35th overall selection. Additionally, Michael Stadnyk of Montana went to the Saskatchewan Roughriders with the 14th selection overall.

MIAMI-Chad Billingsley amassed eight strikeouts in seven innings of work and the Los Angeles Dodgers netted 15 hits in a 13-1 shellacking of the Florida Marlins Wednesday at Dolphin Stadium. Additionally, Rafael Furcal keyed the Dodgers’ high-octane offense as he had five hits, while Russell Martin added a solo home run in the first inning which started the Los Angeles onslaught. The win improved the Dodgers to 14-13 on the season, while Florida fell to 15-12. In other MLB action Wednesday, Minnesota edged the Chicago White Sox, 4-3, Pittsburgh pasted the New York Mets, 13-1, St. Louis got past Cincinnati, 5-2, Arizona outgunned Houston, 8-7, San Francisco snuck past Colorado, 3-2, Washington outlasted Atlanta, 3-2 in 12 innings, Tampa Bay crushed Baltimore, 8-1, Boston doubled up Toronto, 2-1, Cleveland torched Seattle, 8-3, Detroit stymied the New York Yankees, 6-2, San Diego humbled Philadelphia, 4-2, the Chicago Cubs decimated Milwaukee, 19-5, Texas surged past Kansas City, 11-9, and the Los Angeles Angels bested Oakland, 6-1.
Celtics Crush Hawks; Seek to Clinch Series in the ATL on Friday

BOSTON-After a pair of lackluster performances in Atlanta last week, the Boston Celtics took care of business and came within one victory of advancing out of the first round of the NBA playoffs with a 110-85 win over the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday at T.D. Banknorth Garden. Paul Pierce scored a playoff career-high 22 points, while Kevin Garnett chipped in with 20 points and seven assists for the Celtics. The Hawks were sidetracked when Joe Johnson, the hero of Atlanta’s Game 4 victory, incurred early foul trouble and while he scored 21 points; his effectiveness was minimized as Boston raced to a 58-43 lead at intermission. While the Hawks drew to within single digits on several occasions in the second half, the Celtics were never in serious danger in their rout. In other NBA playoff action Wednesday, Washington edged Cleveland, 88-87 to force a Game 6 back in Washington D.C. this Friday.

MANTI, Utah-Shelby Earl amassed 11 strikeouts as the North Sanpete Lady Hawks trounced the Manti Lady Templars, 5-1 Wednesday in non-region softball action.
GUNNISON, Utah-The Richfield Lady Wildcats netted 11 first-inning runs as they decimated the Gunnison Lady Bulldogs, 21-4 in Region 12 softball action Wednesday. Marley Haupt had a home run in the rout for the Lady Wildcats.

DELTA, Utah-The Delta Rabbits scored two first-half goals and held on for a 3-1 victory over the Bear River Bears Wednesday in the first round of the 3A soccer playoffs. Josh Eliason, Curtis Eliason, and Corey Finlinson scored a goal apiece for the Rabbits.
HURRICANE, Utah-Luke Jepson scored two goals and the Hurricane Tigers outlasted the North Sanpete Hawks, 2-1 Wednesday in the first round of the 3A soccer playoffs.
CEDAR CITY, Utah-Brett Johnson had four goals and the Cedar Redmen overpowered the Carbon Dinos, 6-2 in the first round of the 3A soccer playoffs Wednesday. Cody Bradley and Levi Meachem also scored for the Redmen, while Jose Munoz scored both goals for the Dinos.
DRAPER, Utah-Skyler Doran scored the game’s only goal, and Cory Thibeault recorded a shutout as the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle blanked the Waterford Ravens, 1-0 Wednesday in the first round of the 3A soccer playoffs,
SALT LAKE CITY-The Judge Memorial Bulldogs held off the Ben Lomond Scots, 5-4 in a shootout in the first round of the 3A soccer playoffs Wednesday.
MORGAN, Utah-Mikey Rees and Anthony Nelson each scored goals as the Morgan Trojans doused the Wasatch Wasps, 2-0 Wednesday in the first round of the 3A soccer playoffs.
PARK CITY, Utah-Tyler Thomas and Austen Stevens each had goals as the Park City Miners gashed the Ogden Tigers, 2-0 in the first round of the 3A soccer playoffs Wednesday.
LOGAN, Utah-The Uintah Utes outlasted the Logan Grizzlies, 7-6 Wednesday in a shootout in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

SPANISH FORK, Utah-Tony Acosta scored the winning goal in overtime as the American Leadership Eagles edged the Intermountain Christian Lions, 2-1Wednesday in the first round of the 2A soccer playoffs. Wes Henderson had the only goal for the Lions.
MANTI, Utah-The Manti Templars had just enough offense to edge the Wendover Wildcats in a 5-4 shootout in the first round of the 2A soccer playoffs Wednesday. Alma Knudsen, Kenny Squire, and Robert Peterson had goals for the Templars, while Santiago Sandoval, Jose Rosales and Nestor Luna each scored for the Wildcats.
RICHFIELD, Utah-Quaid Busk amassed a hat trick, while Eric Durrant scored two more goals for Richfield as the Wildcats trounced the Salt Lake Lutheran Lynx, 6-2 Wednesday in the first round of the 2A soccer playoffs. Julian Davis scored both of Salt Lake Lutheran’s goals.
SALT LAKE CITY-Robbie Hull scored two goals and Felipe Saltz had a shutout as the Rowland Hall/St. Mark’s Winged Lions blanked the Beaver Beavers, 4-0 in the first round of the 2A playoffs Wednesday.
MURRAY, Utah-Casey Lundgren and J.T. Adlard each had goals as the South Summit Wildcats edged the Mount Vernon Patriots, 2-1 Wednesday in the first round of the 2A playoffs. Antti Tormanen had the only goal for the Patriots in the loss.
OGDEN, Utah-Oliver DelCarlo exploded for five goals as the Saint Joseph Jayhawks crushed the Gunnison Bulldogs, 9-1 in the first round of the 2A playoffs Wednesday.
MOAB, Utah-The Wasatch Academy Tigers scored all five of their goals in the second half as they humbled the Grand Red Devils, 5-2 Wednesday in the first round of the 2A playoffs. Kyle Farmer had a hat trick for the Tigers, while Bradley Jarman and Sebastian Roa each scored for the Red Devils.
WEST JORDAN, Utah-The West Ridge Eagles overcame an early 2-0 deficit to edge the Millard Eagles, 4-2 in the first round of the 2A playoffs Wednesday. Mason Algier had two goals for West Ridge in the victory.

PARK CITY, Utah-The Gunnison Bulldogs blew past the Class 3A Park City Miners, 11-2 Wednesday in non-region baseball action.
FILLMORE, Utah-Clancy Mortensen had three hits and Chandler Bullock earned the win on the mound as the Millard Eagles held off the North Sevier Wolves, 8-6 in non-region baseball action Wednesday.
Commissioners set power plant meetings

(RICHFIELD) – Sevier County Commissioners have planned several work sessions in May regarding issues related to the building of a proposed power plant in Sigurd. The dates set aside are May 8, 15 and 27th. Each meeting will be held at 7pm in the Commission Chambers at the Sevier County Administration Building at 250 North Main in Richfield. The public is invited to attend but no comments will be taken.
Wild horse adoption at prison

(SALT LAKE CITY) – The Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison and the BLM are hosting the adoption of wild horses for the first time at the prison. Program Leader, Gus Warr, said it’s exciting to allow visitors to adopt at the facility. Warr said the inmates are allowed to work with wild horses to prepare them for adoption and the BLM usually transports the horses to satellite adoption areas across the state. He said the horses will be first offered through an oral bidding process before being offered on a first come, first served basis at $125.00. Warr said the gates of the prison will be open on May 6 from 10am to 2pm and vehicles will be searched upon entering and exiting.
Training structure catches fire

(ANNABELLA) – A structure in Annabella used by the Richfield Fire Department for training caught on fire due to high winds. On Tuesday at about 4:30pm, Sevier County Deputies were called to the building at 375 East 200 North. According to a sheriff’s report, the fire department had set the house on fire Thursday for training and had doused the flames but high winds ignited the structure again after fire crews left the scene. The fire department responded and put out the fire. The house is owned by Tina Mitchell who lives next door.
Republican convention

The Sanpete County Republican Party had their nominating convention last night. 201 votes were cast for County Commissioner Seat A. 120 votes were for Spencer Cox at 59%, and 81 votes for Dwight Inouye. The amount was less than 70% necessary to avoid a run-off. June 24th was scheduled for the run-of. Steve Frischknect was un-opposed for Seat B.
