Rockies Outlast Giants in the Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO-Chris Iannetta had a home run and scored on a seventh-inning balk as the Colorado Rockies snuck past the San Francisco Giants, 3-2 Tuesday at AT&T Park. Additionally, Aaron Cook won his fourth straight start for the Rockies, who improved to 11-16 after a season where they represented the National League in the World Series. Garrett Atkins also improved his major-league leading hitting streak to 14 games with a double for Colorado. All of the Giants offense came in the first inning when Aaron Rowand Bengie Molina each had RBI singles. In other MLB action Tuesday, Baltimore gashed Tampa Bay, 7-4, Boston blanked Toronto, 1-0, Seattle torched Cleveland, 7-2, Detroit got past the New York Yankees, 6-4, Philadelphia outlasted San Diego, 7-4, Washington doubled up Atlanta, 6-3, the New York Mets handled Pittsburgh, 5-4 in 11 innings, the Los Angeles Dodgers snuck past Florida, 7-6 Kansas City outgunned Texas, 9-5, Milwaukee overpowered the Chicago Cubs, 10-7, Minnesota trashed the Chicago White Sox, 3-1, St. Louis smoked Cincinnati, 7-2, Houston ousted Arizona, 6-4, and the Los Angeles Angels blanked Oakland, 2-0,
Rockets Evade Elimination; Force A Game 6 in Utah

HOUSTON-Tracy McGrady had 29 points, while Luis Scola added 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Houston Rockets blasted the Utah Jazz, 95-69 Tuesday at Toyota Center to force a Game 6 back in Salt Lake City Friday. Houston was primarily able to repel elimination because of their success in areas where they’d previously failed in this series, such as field goal percentage and free throw percentage. The Rockets shot a respectable 47 percent from the field and 79 percent from the foul line while Utah struggled to get anything going offensively. The Jazz connected on only 37 percent of their shots and netted three quarters where they scored less than 20 points for their meager output. Carlos Boozer had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss for Utah. In other NBA action Tuesday, Detroit torched Philadelphia, 98-81, San Antonio eliminated Phoenix, 92-87, and New Orleans surged past Dallas, 99-94. The Hornets and Spurs will meet in Game 1 of a Western Conference semifinal Saturday.

PRICE, Utah-Whitney Williams used a two-run double in the seventh inning to drive home the winning run as the Carbon Lady Dinos edged the Delta Lady Rabbits, 4-3 Tuesday in Region 8 softball action. Paige Pinedo went the distance for Carbon, and surrendered only four hits for the Lady Dinos.
PRICE, Utah-Devri Fitzgerald hit a home run and pitched a complete game for the Delta Lady Rabbits as they humbled the Carbon Lady Dinos, 3-1 in Region 8 softball action Tuesday.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Utah-Leslie Lake pitched a two-hit shutout and amassed an RBI single to help the Emery Lady Spartans best the North Sanpete Lady Hawks, 3-0 Tuesday in Region 8 softball action. The Lady Hawks also committed three errors in defeat.
MANTI, Utah-Kaitlyn Hatch had two hits for the Manti Lady Templars and pitched a two-hit shutout as the Manti Lady Templars steamrolled the Richfield Lady Wildcats, 15-0 in Region 12 softball action Tuesday.
SALINA, Utah-Aubrey Lindgren earned the win on the mound for the South Sevier Lady Rams as they torched the North Sevier Lady Wolves, 14-4 Tuesday in Region 12 softball action.
NEPHI, Utah-The American Leadership Lady Eagles blew the game open with 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings as they smacked the Juab Lady Wasps, 13-3 in Region 14 softball action Tuesday. Sarah Madson had a home run for American Leadership in the win.

Superintendent-Vice president receive award

(RICHFIELD) – Sevier County School District Superintendent, Brent Thorne and School Board Vice-President, Jack Hansen, have each received the Superior Civilian Service Award from the Department of Army. The award, from Major General Brian Tarbet, was presented to Thorne and Hansen on April 15, during a school board meeting, by Sgt. Major Larry Hansen of the Utah National Guard. According to Sgt. Hansen, Thorne and Hansen assisted the community in making more than 200 small wood chairs as a way to provide funds to help financially support the families of Utah National Guard troops who had been deployed to Iraq. They were able to raise over $40,000 which was donated to the Family Readiness Group. Hansen especially thanked Thorne for donating over 700 hours of time in building and assembling the chairs and pursuing donations.
Wildfire Academy welcomes firefighters

(RICHFIELD) – The Sixth Annual Wildfire Academy is about to get underway in Richfield. According to Assistant Manager, Karen Feary, the Academy will offer several courses in fighting wildfires. The Wildfire Academy will be held May 12-16 at the Snow College Richfield Campus. Student tuition is $35.00 per day and after April 30, the tuition will increase to $45.00 per day. The Incident Management Team will oversee all aspects of the Academy, including classes, field excercises, meals, camping and events. Diamondbacks Strike Astros, Improve to 19-7

PHOENIX-Dan Haren pitched into the eighth inning and contributed with an RBI single to put the Arizona Diamondbacks on the board as they bested the Houston Astros, 5-3 Monday at Chase Field. Haren, a former Oakland Athletic, surrendered only five hits in 7 2/3 innings of work while Mark Reynolds added a two-run double for the Diamondbacks who lead the majors with a 19-7 record. Arizona broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning as Chris Snyder hit a single to give the Diamondbacks a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish. Miguel Tejada had an RBI single in the eighth inning for Houston which dropped their third straight game after previously winning six in a row. In other MLB action Monday, the New York Yankees waxed Cleveland, 5-2, Cincinnati edged St. Louis, 4-3, Oakland decimated the Los Angeles Angels, 14-2, and San Francisco blanked Colorado, 4-0.
Lakers Sweep Nuggets; Await Rockets or Jazz

DENVER-Kobe Bryant once again saved his best for last as he scored 14 of his 31 points in the last five minutes of the game as the Los Angeles Lakers completed a sweep of the Denver Nuggets with a 107-101 victory Monday at the Pepsi Center. Pau Gasol chipped in with 21 points for Los Angeles which obtained their first sweep in a playoff series since taking four games from New Jersey in the 2002 NBA Finals. Although the Nuggets had a successful season and won more than 50 games, they became the first team to amass that many victories to be swept in the first round of the playoffs in NBA history. J.R. Smith had 26 points for the Nuggets in defeat, while the Lakers await the winner of the Houston-Utah series which the Jazz currently lead 3-1. In other NBA action Monday, Orlando advanced out of the first round with a 102-92 win over Toronto, and Atlanta stunned Boston, 97-92.
