Washington County gets wilderness designation

Published on April 23, 2008 at 11:25AM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Bob Bennett has introduced legislation in Congress that addresses land management in Utah’s Washington County. For several years, environmentalists and land developers have been battling over growth in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, until the groups combined to iron out their differences. Sen. Bennett said with the Washington County Growth and Conservation Act, several thousand acres will be designated wilderness. William Meadows, president of the Wilderness Society, said he’s grateful to move beyond the polarization over wilderness but still has concerns over certain aspects of the bill. Sen. Orrin Hatch, cosponsor of the legislation, applauded Bennett for working hand-in-glove with local leaders to produce comprehensive legislation that balances the needs of the region’s families, the environment they cherish and the economy that sustains them.

Fire crews douse corral fire

Published on April 23, 2008 at 10:39AM

(ELSINORE) – An early morning fire at a corral in Elsinore was quickly doused by fire crews. At about 3:00 this morning, a Sevier County Deputy was patrolling the area and noticed flames coming from a corral at 100 East and 200 South in Elsinore. According to a sheriff’s report, the deputy knocked on several doors of nearby residences to find out if they knew about the fire but received no response. He then called the Elsinore and Monroe Fire Departments to put out the fire. Fire crews determined that the cause of the fire was due to someone burning ditches in a nearby field and the fire spreading to the poles and some hay in the corrals. Neighbors told authorities the owner of the house and corrals is currently living in Salt Lake.
