Published on April 07, 2008 at 11:17PM
DENVER-Matt Holiday hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies snapped a five game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves Monday evening at Coors Field. Braves pitcher Tom Glavine, before leaving in the sixth inning, surrendered only three hits in nearly seven innings of work, but after Blaine Boyer came in from the bullpen, the Rockies’ bats came to life. Aaron Cook pitched seven effective innings for Colorado, and the game lasted only 125 minutes, a record for the shortest game in Coors Field history. In other MLB action Monday, Philadelphia surged past Cincinnati, 5-3, the Chicago Cubs outlasted Pittsburgh, 10-8 in 12 innings, Baltimore held off Seattle, 5-4, the Chicago White Sox got past Minnesota, 7-4, San Diego doubled up San Francisco, 8-4, the New York Yankees waxed Tampa Bay, 6-1, Houston got by St. Louis, 5-3, Florida outgunned Washington, 10-7, Arizona bested the Los Angeles Dodgers, 9-3, and the Los Angeles Angels dropped Cleveland, 6-4.
Jayhawks Soar to First Title in 20 Years, Via Clutch Play

SAN ANTONIO-Darrell Arthur had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Mario Chalmers hit a clutch 3-pointer to put the game in overtime as the Kansas Jayhawks outlasted the Memphis Tigers, 75-68 to win their first national championship in 20 years Monday night at the Alamodome in the NCAA mens’ basketball title game. The game was nip-and-tuck throughout, as both teams held the lead at numerous times during the game. Nevertheless, with a seven-point advantage in the last two minutes of regulation, Memphis had a great opportunity to win their first national title in program history. However, the Tigers missed several free throws and Kansas executed flawlessly down the stretch. After Chalmers hit his trey, the Jayhawks finished on a 12-5 flurry to procure the national title. The loss brought what was a magnificent season to a bittersweet end for Memphis, as John Calipari’s Tigers finished 38-2 on the season and almost became the first so-called mid-major to win a national title since Nevada-Las Vegas in 1990. While Memphis did shoot a respectable 63 percent from the foul line on the night, most of the crucial misses occurred in the final two minutes of play as their bad habits from earlier in the season at the free throw line resurfaced. The overtime session proved to be the seventh all time in championship game history, with the last occurring in 1997 when Arizona beat Kentucky, 84-79. The win was also sweet for Kansas coach Bill Self who amid speculation that he would take the head coaching job at his alma mater, Oklahoma State, maintained his focus and led the Jayhawks to a national crown for the first time since the days of All-American Danny Manning in Lawrence, Kan. Incidentally, Manning is one of Self’s assistants and was instrumental in helping the Jayhawks post players give Memphis a variety of looks defensively, while Kansas also dominated scoring much more effectively in the paint than the Tigers.

WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Orrin Hatch confirmed on Friday that Hill Air Force Base will receive nearly $30-million to buy F-22A Raptor maintenance equipment. Hatch said the Air Force has decided to fund the purchase of radar, engine-test and other equipment HFAB needs to maintain the strike aircraft, which is replacing the outgoing F-15. Hatch said the F-22A Raptor will play a vital role in protecting U.S. interests in the 21st century and provide a boost to Utah’s robust economy. He helped secure a multi-year plan in the fiscal year 2007 Defense Authorization Act to buy the fighters in bulk instead of purchasing them on a yearly basis, saving taxpayers over $400-million, which can be used to fund the purchase of maintenance equipment.
