Jayhawks Rock Tar Heels; Advance to National Title Game
Published on April 05, 2008 at 11:37PM
SAN ANTONIO-Brandon Rush had 25 points and seven rebounds and the Kansas Jayhawks surged out to a 40-12 first-half lead en route to an 84-66 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels Saturday evening at the Final Four at the Alamodome. Although the Tar Heels came back to within four points midway through the second half, Rush made a key basket for Kansas while Sherron Collins added a clutch 3-pointer to help the Jayhawks put the game away. The win was especially sweet for diehard Jayhawks fans as it came at the expense of former coach Roy Williams who when leading Kansas to the national title game of 2003, a loss to Syracuse, told CBS’ Bonnie Bernstein he wasn’t interested in the job at North Carolina. Nevertheless, two weeks later Williams was at Tobacco Road, and Jayhawks fans were incensed. However, the modern-day rendition of Kansas basketball, with Bill Self at the helm will be playing for a national championship Monday evening while Williams will return to Chapel Hill, N.C., to plan for next season. Wayne Ellington had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the way for the Tar Heels. Kansas will next face the Memphis Tigers, who disposed of the UCLA Bruins, 78-63 in the opening game of the afternoon. The national title game will tip off around 7:21 (MDT) Monday evening.
