Prep Softball Action: March 18

CASTLE DALE, Utah-Markette Tanner had a grand slam and five RBI overall as the Emery Lady Spartans hammered the North Sevier Lady Wolves, 13-1 in non-region softball action Tuesday.

GUNNISON, Utah-The San Juan Lady Broncos went on a 7-0 surge to close out the game as they humbled the Gunnison Lady Bulldogs, 9-4 Tuesday in Region 12 softball action. The Lady Bulldogs also committed four errors in the loss.

GUNNISON, Utah-The San Juan Lady Broncos finished the game with an 11-run fourth inning to complete a doubleheader sweep over the Gunnison Lady Bulldogs, 19-3 in Region 12 softball action Tuesday. Offensively, Janera Nelson had two doubles for the Lady Broncos, while she also surrendered only four hits to go with Gunnison’s three runs.

RICHFIELD, Utah-The South Sevier Lady Rams blew the game open with a seven-run surge in the third inning as they decimated the Richfield Lady Wildcats, 14-4 Tuesday in Region 12 softball action. The win was South Sevier’s first on the season as well as in region play.

KANAB, Utah-The Beaver Lady Beavers had just enough offense to surge past the Kanab Cowgirls, 16-12 in Region 13 softball action Tuesday.

PAROWAN, Utah-The Parowan Lady Rams pounded the Millard Lady Eagles, 16-6 Tuesday in Region 13 softball action.

DELTA, Utah-The Delta Rabbits built an insurmountable five-goal lead in the first half and cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Canyon View Falcons Tuesday in non-region soccer action.

MONROE, Utah-Wade Melling scored both goals for the Beaver Beavers, including the game-winner in overtime as Beaver got past South Sevier, 2-1 in Region 13 soccer action Tuesday. Oscar Gonzalez scored the sole goal for the Rams in the loss.

GUNNISON, Utah-The Grand Red Devils raced out to a 5-1 lead at intermission en route to a 10-4 victory over the Gunnison Bulldogs Tuesday in Region 13 soccer action. Bradley Jarmen had two goals for the Red Devils, while Ricardo Mendoza netted two goals for the Bulldogs.

FILLMORE, Utah-Josh Aleman pulled off a hat trick, including the game-winning score in overtime as the Millard Eagles outlasted the Manti Templars, 5-4 in Region 13 soccer action Tuesday. Kenny Squire had two goals for the Templars.

RICHFIELD, Utah-The Richfield Wildcats built a 6-0 lead in the first half as they pounded the North Sevier Wolves, 9-1 in Region 13 soccer action Tuesday. Quaid Busk had a hat trick for the Wildcats, who improved to 5-0, while North Sevier fell to 0-5 on the young season.

CEDAR CITY, Utah-The Canyon View Falcons overcame an early 1-0 deficit by outscoring Delta 18-1 the rest of the way in an 18-2 win over the Delta Rabbits Tuesday in non-region baseball action. Gentry Julian hit a pair of home runs and amassed seven RBI in the blowout victory for the Falcons.

MANTI, Utah-The Juab Wasps overcame an early 2-0 deficit to get past the Manti Templars, 7-3 in non-region baseball action Tuesday. The Wasps also overcame offensive struggles which netted only five hits to procure the victory.

BLANDING, Utah-Bradley Jackson scattered five hits with four runs to lead the Gunnison Bulldogs to an 11-4 win over the San Juan Broncos Tuesday in Region 12 baseball action. Cutler Frandsen also had a homer for the Bulldogs, who amassed 14 hits on the afternoon in the rout.

BLANDING, Utah-Kevin Nay had two hits offensively and also struck out eight batters as the Gunnison Bulldogs completed a doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 win over the San Juan Broncos in Region 12 baseball action Tuesday.

RICHFIELD, Utah-Jesse Hartle went the distance, striking out six and allowing only one run while offensively, he amassed two RBI as the Richfield Wildcats smoked the South Sevier Rams, 11-1 Tuesday in Region 12 baseball action.

KANAB, Utah-Stoney White struck out 11 batters and the Beaver Beavers handed the Kanab Cowboys their first loss of the season with a 5-2 win Tuesday in Region 13 baseball action.

PAROWAN, Utah-The Parowan Rams went on a 6-0 flurry to finish the game and belted out 14 hits as they smoked the Millard Eagles, 15-2 Tuesday in Region 13 baseball action.

Candidate Filings In Sanpete

(Manti) Monday was the deadline to file as a candidate for the general election coming up in November. A number of offices are up for election in the county and state including County Commission, School Board, House, and Senate. Dwight Inouye and Spencer Cox, both Republicans, will contend for the Sanpete County Commission Seat A which Inouye was recently appointed to. Steve Frischknect, Claude Pickett, and Mark Anderson will vie for the other Sanpete Commission seat currently held by Anderson. Anderson and Frischknect both registered as Republicans while Pickett is running on the Democratic ticket. Three candidates have filed for State Senate District 24. Ralph Okerlund of Monroe will run as a Republican, Benton Peterson of Manti on the Constitution Party ticket, and Tobiah Dillon as a Democrat. The seat is currently held by Darin Peterson who has withdrawn from the contest along with Eddie Cox of Fairview. Incumbent Patrick Painter and Feleni Siufanua will contend for House District 67. Brad Winn will seek re-election in House District 68 against Ed Phillips of Kanosh and Susan Kaye Sorensen of Mount Pleasant. While House District 70 will be fought for by Incumbent Kay McIff, Bevan Bastian, and Scott Turner. Parties will hold caucus meetings in the near future to organize and make final selections if more than one candidate from the party is running for the same position.

Bennett honors troops on anniversary

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – This week marks the fifth anniversary of troop deployment in Iraq. Sen. Bob Bennett spoke on the Senate floor yesterday saying that no matter where we stand on the war in Iraq, the troops deserve our support. Bennett said we need to keep the troops in our thoughts and prayers, not only on holidays or anniversaries, but as long as they are in deployment in world conflicts. He said he hopes the troops are safe in their service to their country.

Committee approves vet memorial

(RICHFIELD) – The Richfield Veterans Memorial Committee has approved the final design of the veterans memorial to be constructed in the Richfield City Cemetery. Committee Chairman, Dave Ogden, said that the committee was very satisfied with the design and that it will be a beautiful addition to the county. Steve Gilbert of Arc Sitio Design, Inc., presented the committee with the final draft Friday morning at a meeting in the Richfield City Council chambers where the design was approved. Construction should begin this summer.

Commissioners hear power plant presentations

(RICHFIELD) – Sevier County Commissioners heard comments Friday morning from two presenters concerning the building of a power plant near Sigurd. Stan Ivie of the Sevier Citizens for Clean Air and Water, spoke on the geological faults in Sevier Valley. Ivie said that a 6.5 earthquake in the early 1900’s in Richfield could happen again and said that County Commissioners need to conduct a geological survey to determine if building a power plant along fault lines would be the safest area. Developer, Sam Morgan, also spoke to the Commissioners, saying that constructing a power plant would be benefical for future development in the valley.
