Published on January 05, 2008 at 11:35PM

TUCSON, Ariz.-The Oregon Ducks torched the nets by shooting 56 percent, while Malik Hairston scored 29 points in an 84-74 upset of the #21 Arizona Wildcats Saturday afternoon at the McKale Center. The Ducks built a 19-point lead in the first half, and never allowed the Wildcats to get within five points of them in the second half. Chase Budinger had 30 points for Arizona, but without the services of Jerryd Bayless for the third consecutive game, the Wildcats’ offense lacked fluidity and was no match for Oregon’s high-octane attack. ATLANTA-The NBA’s most consistent triple-double threat did his stuff again, and perhaps because of his efforts, the New Jersey Nets are ready for a resuscitation. Despite being outscored in the first three quarters, New Jersey ousted the Hawks with their effort in the last stanza as they outscored Atlanta, 37-28 in that span. Jags Demoralize Steelers in Close Call

Published on January 05, 2008 at 11:10PM

PITTSBURGH-David Garrard ran 32 yards on a key 4th and 2 situation in the closing moments as the Jacksonville Jaguars asserted themselves against the Pittsburgh Steelers once again with a 31-29 victory at Heinz Field in the AFC Wild Card playoffs Saturday night. The Jaguars received this vital run from Garrard on an evening, which by his previous performances, had not lived up to his standard of excellence. After all, the athletic signal-caller from East Carolina had thrown two interceptions earlier in the game after only throwing three all season. Nevertheless, when the Steelers scored 19 consecutive points to erase a 28-10 deficit going into the fourth quarter, the Jags refused to panic, primarily because of the composure of their field general. Garrard’s heroics set up a 25-yard field goal from Josh Scobee which proved to seal the game as on the subsequent series, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (337 yards, 2 TD’s, 3 INT’s) fumbled and Jacksonville pounced on the loose ball and ran out the clock. Additionally, Maurice Jones-Drew (168 all-purpose yards, 2 TD’s) and Rashean Mathis (2 INT’s, one of which was returned 63 yards for a score) had solid games for Jacksonville, while Steelers receiver Hines Ward (10 receptions, 135 yards) was solid in defeat. In other playoff action Saturday, Seattle decimated Washington, 35-14 in the NFC.
