Many of those investing in such funds cannot afford to lose the money. The state is currently investigating a locally managed hedge fund that was sending money to the Mediterranean island of Malta where the money would simply disappear.

Elam Comes Through Again For Broncos In Win Over Vikes

Published on December 30, 2007 at 10:32PM

DENVER-In a sporadic and inconsistent season for the Denver Broncos, time and time again, they’ve been able to rely upon their solid kicker, Jason Elam. Elam came through once again Sunday for the Broncos at INVESCO Field @ Mile High as he hit a 30-yard kick in overtime to lead the Broncos to a 22-19 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota came into the game with playoff aspirations until Washington procured the last berth in the NFC playoffs with a 27-6 pasting of Dallas. Nevertheless, the Vikings showed strong resolve in rallying from a 19-3 deficit in the fourth quarter with two Tarvaris Jackson (175 yards) scoring tosses to Bobby Wade. Despite this, Minnesota killed themselves with numerous turnovers as Elam’s game-winner (his fourth of the season) was set up by a fumble caused by Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil. Offensively, the Broncos also had a stellar performance as Jay Cutler (246 yards, two TD’s) made big plays in the passing game while receiver Brandon Marshall amassed 10 receptions, giving him 102 on the season and thus becoming only the third wideout to snare more than 100 passes in his second season joining stalwarts Isaac Bruce and Larry Fitzgerald. In other NFL action Sunday, Cincinnati smacked Miami, 38-25, Philadelphia humbled Buffalo, 17-9, Carolina surged past Tampa Bay, 31-23, Atlanta outgunned Seattle, 44-41, Chicago overpowered New Orleans, 33-25, Houston handled Jacksonville, 42-28, Cleveland gashed San Francisco, 20-7, Green Bay decimated Detroit, 34-13, Baltimore surprised Pittsburgh, 27-21, Arizona demoralized St. Louis, 48-19, San Diego stymied Oakland, 30-17, the New York Jets outlasted Kansas City, 13-10 in overtime, and Tennessee earned a playoff berth with a 16-10 win over Indianapolis.

Nittany Lions Give Paterno Win in Historic 500th Game

Published on December 30, 2007 at 12:02AM

SAN ANTONIO-The Penn State Nittany Lions overcame an early 14-0 deficit to make Joe Paterno’s 500th game a success as they handled the Texas A&M Aggies, 24-17 Saturday evening in the Alamo Bowl. Deon Butler, Evan Royster, and Daryll Clark each had touchdowns for Penn State, as the legendary Paterno won an NCAA-record 23rd bowl game on the evening. Additionally, the Nittany Lions ran for 270 yards, 143 of which came from Rodney Kinlaw. The win was exceptionally sweet for Penn State as earlier in the week, they had to endure taunting from a petulant Texas A&M student who said the Aggies’ win would be so impressive, that the 81-year old Paterno would have to leave the field in a casket. Obviously, this did not happen as the Nittanies used 413 yards of offense and stifling defense which surrendered only 328 offensive yards on the night to emerge victorious. In other bowl action Saturday, Wake Forest stonewalled #25 Connecticut, 24-10 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, while Mississippi State humbled Central Florida, 10-3 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

Pats Remain Perfect With Win Over Giants

Published on December 29, 2007 at 11:42PM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.-The New England Patriots’ quest for perfection continued on the same field where it began in Week 1. Although the Pats had to scrape and struggle much more for this one than they did on the season’s opening weekend against the Jets, the victory was sweet as they edged the New York Giants, 38-35 Saturday night at Giants Stadium. Tom Brady tossed for 356 yards and threw two touchdown passes, the second of which gave him an NFL record with his 50th touchdown pass of the season. Both of his scoring tosses went to Randy Moss (six receptions, 100 yards) who set his own NFL record with 23 touchdown receptions in a season. Nevertheless, the Patriots were forced to erase a 12-point deficit in the second half to gain the victory against a Giants squad which because of its locked-in matchup with Tampa Bay next weekend in the NFC playoffs had nothing to play for. Despite this, New York played to win and was nearly successful as Eli Manning (251 yards, 4 TD’s, INT) played one of the best games of his career thus far while Plaxico Burress (four receptions, 84 yards, 2 TD’s) proved to be a reliable target. In finishing the regular season spotless, New England became only the fourth team in NFL history to do so, joining the 1972 Dolphins, 1942 Bears and 1934 Bears.

(Utah) The Utah Safety Council has released information on the number of homes testing positive for radon gas. Of those who purchased and installed radon detectors in 2007, one in three had radon levels that would require corrective action. Radon gas occurs naturally and is tasteless, odorless, and the result of uranium breakdown in rocks and soil. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer after tobacco smoke. The Utah Safety Council recommends that homeowners purchase and install a radon detection kit as a precaution. Once the test has been completed, it can be mailed to the manufacturer for analysis. The test results will be returned via email or regular mail. For more information on radon or to purchase a test kit you can go to utahsafetycouncil.org.

Oil Shale Environmental Draft

Published on December 21, 2007 at 11:15AM

Updated on December 21, 2007 at 06:43PM

(Utah) The B-L-M has released its draft environmental impact statement to guide future management of oil shale and tar sand resources on federal land in Utah and neighboring states. The plan would allow development of resources on one-point-nine million acres in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. According to the B-L-M, the Green River oil shale reserves are more than fifty times greater than conventional oil reserves in the rest of the country. A low end estimate suggests that oil retrieved from the proposed parcels would equate to sixty-one billion barrels. That could provide enough gasoline for eighteen years of U-S consumption. The plan also prohibits exploration in any wilderness area, wilderness study area, or other unit considered sensitive. Today (Friday) marks the beginning of the ninety day public comment period. The draft is available online at ostseis.anl.gov, as well as in paper form. Comments can be submitted via the same website.

Hatch backs tax relief bill

Published on December 21, 2007 at 11:03AM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Congress has passed a one-year temporary tax relief bill that was originally designed to tax a small group of wealthy Americans to prevent other Americans from paying a larger tax bill. Sen. Orrin Hatch was a strong backer of the relief bill saying that 21 million Americans, including 100,000 Utahns, will not have to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) for 2007. He said that had Congress failed to enact the bill, it would have been like putting a lump of coal in the collective stocking of the American taxpayer. The AMT was introduced into the U.S. tax law in 1969 in response to reports that 155 wealthy Americans paid no income tax. The law was orginally designed to affect only well-to-do taxpayers who availed themselves of various deductions and credits to lower their taxes but the AMT was never indexed for inflation and is now hitting millions of middle-income taxpayers which have not been affected by the law.

Hatch is the only Republican member of both the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence committees. He said that a bipartisan majority of the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this year approved protection of telecommunication companies, but Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee oppose those protections. Hatch commented that Congress should not condone oversight through litigation.

Salina seedpicking problems

Published on December 14, 2007 at 04:47PM

(SALINA) – Several Salina residents have complained to city officials over the storage, handling and drying of seeds in town. Seed pickers gather the product to sell to the BLM and Forest Service to help restore forage on public lands caused by fires and erosion. The workers spread the seed out to dry but residents say the wind picks up and spreads the seed into their yards and gardens, resulting in weeds the following season. In this week’s city council meeting, Salina officials said they’ve corrected the problem. Also in the meeting, the city changed the ATV ordinance to match State law that riders do not need a driver’s license to drive an ATV, only a safety permit.

Kubiak Gets the Best of His Mentor As Texans Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

Published on December 13, 2007 at 10:28PM

HOUSTON-Sage Rosenfels improved to 3-0 as the Houston Texans’ starter and completed 16 of 27 passes for 200 yards, a touchdown and an interception in their 31-13 victory over the Denver Broncos Thursday night at Reliant Stadium. The Texans never trailed and stymied the Broncos for the most part despite the fact that Denver moved the ball down the field consistently. The Broncos pulled to within 17-13 in the third quarter when Jay Cutler (27-39, 256 yards, TD) hit TE Tony Scheffler on a 12-yard scoring strike but Houston showed its mettle by scoring two key fourth quarter touchdowns, a 5-yard pass from Rosenfels to receiver Andre Johnson (six receptions, 88 yards) and a one-yard plunge by fullback Vonta Leach in the closing minutes. The win was sweet for Texans coach Gary Kubiak, as he spent more than a decade as a backup quarterback to John Elway for the Broncos and had been mentored by Denver coach Mike Shanahan throughout his career. Additionally, Houston tied a franchise record by winning their seventh game of the season and with games remaining against AFC South rivals Jacksonville and Indianapolis, they still have a shot at postseason play, albeit a remote one. As for the Broncos, for all intents and purposes their season is over, as divisional rival San Diego can wrap up the AFC West with a victory against Detroit this Sunday.

Richfield curfew ordinance

Published on December 12, 2007 at 03:12PM

(RICHFIELD) – Richfield City Officials are moving towards changing the curfew ordinance. At the city council meeting last night, the discussion was over changing the ordinance for minors when they are not in school. Councilmember, Larry Lunnen, said the ordinance could be too confusing by changing curfew times too often. Lunnen said the tough curfew ordinance was due to problems 20 years ago. He said those problems are no longer a reason for the curfew to remain the way it is now. He said the best way to change the ordinance is to keep curfew times year around, instead of separate times for when school is in session and in recess. Lunnen commented that the curfew for 14 years of age and younger should be at 10pm on weeknights and 11pm on weekends year around and for 15-17 year olds, 11pm on weeknights and midnight on weekends, year around. Curfew would be an extra hour for 15-17 year olds. Members of the Richfield High School Law Enforcement Class pushed for the change and several parents supported it. The council decided to make the change in next month’s council meeting.

'Skins Gut Out Tough Win Against Bears

Published on December 06, 2007 at 11:28PM

LANDOVER, Md.-Stepping in for an injured Jason Campbell, Todd Collins literally played the best football of this century as the Washington Redskins’ reserve signal-caller completed 15 of 20 passes for 224 yards and a pair of scores (the first time he’d done so since 1998 when he quarterbacked the Chiefs) to lead the ‘Skins to a 24-16 victory over the Chicago Bears Thursday night at FedEx Field. The game was full of numerous injuries, as both Campbell and Chicago’s staring QB Rex Grossman, were sidelined with injuries and costly penalties for both squads. Nevertheless, thanks to two interceptions by veteran cornerback Shawn Springs (the first of which set up the game’s first touchdown when Collins hit Todd Yoder on a 21-yard scoring strike) Washington scored the first points of the night and dictated to the Bears from that time on. Although Bears reserve quarterback Brian Griese proved to have a good game as well (27-45, 295 yards, TD, 2 INT’s), the Redskins’ lead proved insurmountable after fullback Mike Sellers burst into the end zone on a two-yard run to give Washington a 14-0 lead in the third quarter. With the loss, Chicago’s season, for all intents and purposes is over, just one season after they represented the NFC in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, although they have difficult games remaining against the Giants, Vikings and Cowboys, the Redskins’ playoff hopes are still alive.

Loa Fish Hatchery quarantined

Published on December 05, 2007 at 04:46PM

(LOA) – The Loa Fish Hatchery continutes to be under state quarantine as DWR officials look for ways to eradicate the New Zealand Mud Snails. Hatchery Superindentant, Patrick Brown, says they want to destroy the invading species without killing the fish. The fish hatchery was closed on Monday due to the discovery. Brown says The New Zealand Mud Snails are one of several aquatic nuisance species (ANS) that have made their way into Utah. He says ANS are nasty plants and animals that can ruin fishing and affect boating and recreational activities in waters they’ve infested. They reproduce hundreds of times per year and can colonize new waters. Brown says the best way to avoid transporting the species from one body of water to another, is to disinfect your waders and other fishing gear before stepping into a different body of water. He says state officials will not increase trout numbers at the Loa Hatchery and they hope to have an answer soon to get rid of the invasive snails.

This means that Fairview city businesses will be closed tomorrow (thursday) and the Fairview Elementary school will be getting out at noon. Students will be served brunch and then let out of school tomorrow (Thursday).

Neitzel's Heroics Save Michigan State Against Bradley

Published on December 05, 2007 at 12:23AM

PEORIA, Ill.-Raymar Morgan had 15 points and Drew Neitzel hit a clutch three-pointer down the stretch as the #10 Michigan State Spartans eradicated a nine-point second half deficit to edge the Bradley Braves, 66-61 Tuesday night at Carver Arena. After Neitzel’s shot gave the Spartans a 54-51 lead which they wouldn’t relinquish, the senior preseason All-American later hit two free throws to increase Michigan State’s lead to 64-59 with 16 seconds to go. The win improved Michigan State to 7-1 on the season, while they must travel to Salt Lake City this Saturday to battle the nationally-ranked Brigham Young Cougars in what promises to be a tough game for Tom Izzo’s squad. In other Top 25 action Tuesday, #1 North Carolina obliterated Pennsylvania, 106-71, #2 Memphis edged USC, 62-58 in overtime, and #12 Tennessee got past Tennessee-Chattanooga, 76-70.

Stoudemire's Big Night KO's Pacers

Published on December 05, 2007 at 12:14AM

INDIANAPOLIS-Amare Stoudemire had 42 points and 13 rebounds and made 12 of his 13 free throws on the night as the Phoenix Suns outgunned the Indiana Pacers, 121-117 Tuesday night at Conseco Fieldhouse. Additionally, the Suns’ veteran guard Steve Nash made a huge three-pointer to give Phoenix a 118-117 lead they would not relinquish with 42 seconds left to play. Although the Suns excelled in their up-tempo free-flowing style of play, the Pacers were their equal throughout the ballgame as they erased a 12-point deficit primarily because of Phoenix’s numerous quick shots. Nevertheless, Stoudemire’s excellence down the stretch bailed the Suns out and prevented Indiana from victimizing yet another Western conference power as the Pacers have already beaten the Mavericks, Jazz, Warriors and Hornets this season. Jermaine O’Neal had 30 points while nailing 14 of his 20 field goal attempts for Indiana. In other NBA action Tuesday, Detroit got past Atlanta, 106-95, New Jersey smacked Cleveland, 100-79, the Los Angeles Lakers gashed Minnesota, 116-95, Sacramento stymied Utah, 117-107, and Milwaukee defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, 87-78.

MANTI, Utah-Dana Allred and Aubrey Ballow had 10 points apiece and the Juab Lady Wasps played stifling defense en route to a 45-18 win over the Manti Lady Templars Tuesday evening. The Lady Templars were unable to get anything going offensively on the evening as they took only 23 shots, despite the fact that they shot 39 percent from the field to Juab’s 33 percent. Additionally, Manti’s 37 turnovers enabled the Lady Wasps to get numerous easy shots which enabled them to coast to the easy win. Sarah Wallingford had 12 points to pace the Lady Templars and lead all scorers.

BEAVER, Utah-Morgan Wood had 24 points and the Beaver Lady Beavers used a key 13-1 run to blow away the Cedar Lady Reds, 54-32 Tuesday night. Jacey Blackner also had a solid game by snaring 10 rebounds for Beaver in the rout.

CASTLE DALE, Utah-The Emery Lady Spartans nailed eight three pointers and went on a 28-11 run in the third quarter to stymie the Richfield Lady Wildcats, 61-48 Tuesday evening. Jodi Robertson had 16 points to lead the Lady Spartans.

DELTA, Utah-The South Sevier Lady Rams relied upon solid defense and sufficient offense to smack the Delta Lady Rabbits, 52-24 Tuesday night. Aubrey Lindgren had 16 points to lead South Sevier.

FILLMORE, Utah-Brooke Christensen had 16 points, and Millard bolted out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter as the Lady Eagles held off the South Summit Lady Wildcats, 50-42 Tuesday night.

(Mount Pleasant) Mount Pleasant city has ammended their collection policy for delinquent utility payments. Until now residents had ninety days to pay before any action would be taken. But the city found that those who were ninety days behind were unable to come up with the amount needed to cover the back charges. By the fifth day of the following month, the bill will be considered delinquent, and if the bill is not payed by the 20th the utility will be turned off until payment is received. The city will also not reconnect utilities or receive payment after 5:00 PM.

28 sheep killed near Holden

Published on December 04, 2007 at 11:27AM

(HOLDEN) – Dozens of sheep were killed yesterday afternoon when a semi plowed into a herd north of Holden. UHP Trooper, Jeff Rowell, investigated the incident and said that at about 3pm, a truck driver from the Good Shepherd Dairy of Delta was traveling southbound on the frontage road paralelling I-15 and apparently didn’t see the sheep. The driver said that there was a sag in the road and noticed a car stopped in front of him. He said that he would have hit the car or the sheep and made a decision to swerve and hit the sheep instead. An alert motorist said that the road is straight and there are no sags or hills along that route. The motorist also said that there were sheepherders trucks blocking the southbound road. Trooper Rowell said the accident is still under investigation. 28 sheep perished in the accident. The sheep belonged to John Bown of Fayette. His workers were moving the sheep to the winter range on Highway 50.

Blazers Edge Grizzlies in Tight One

Published on December 03, 2007 at 11:30PM

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-Travis Outlaw had 21 points, including the go-ahead basket as time expired to lead the Portland Trailblazers to a 106-105 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies Monday night at the FedEx Forum. This not only won the game, but proved to be Outlaw’s second buzzer-beater of the night as in the third quarter, he drilled a 30-foot shot at the end of the period to cut Memphis’ lead to 80-78. Brandon Roy also had 26 points and nine rebounds for Portland, who shot 52 percent for the game, while LaMarcus Aldridge added 23 more to lead the Trailblazers to their first road win on the season. Fortuitous Pats Survive Close Call Against Ravens

Published on December 03, 2007 at 10:37PM

BALTIMORE-For the second consecutive week, the New England Patriots found a way to gut out a victory despite being outplayed by a lightly-regarded opponent as they edged the Baltimore Ravens, 27-24 Monday night at M&T Bank Stadium. The Ravens, much like the Eagles last weekend, were able to consistently apply pressure to Tom Brady and force him into questionable decisions. Additionally, Ravens signal-caller Kyle Boller (15-23, 210 yards, 2 TD’s, INT) made huge plays in the passing game while tailback Willis McGahee (30 car, 138 yards, TD) was able to gash the Patriots defense early and often. Despite all of these elements stacked against them, the Pats struggled and clawed to remain in the game and finally seized a 27-24 lead late in the game when Jabar Gaffney scored a controversial touchdown on an eight-yard pass from Brady. Although Gaffney had both of his feet in-bounds on the scoring toss, he appeared to juggle the ball, but the officials gave him the score. Nevertheless, the Ravens were far from dead as Boller completed a 52-yard hail mary toss downfield on the game’s last play to wideout Mark Clayton, but Clayton was tackled before he could break the plane, or lateral the ball to teammate Derrick Mason. Things will only get tougher for the Patriots as next Sunday, they must host the solid Pittsburgh Steelers at Foxborough, Mass.

Badgers Remain Hot With Sweep at NIC

Published on December 03, 2007 at 04:33PM

COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO-This past weekend, Snow’s men’s basketball team ensued in its hot streak as they won three consecutive games at the North Idaho Tournament last week. The Badgers started things off on the right note last Thursday when they defeated the Grant MacEwen Griffins of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, 99-57 as Venezuelan export Rene Farias amassed 24 points for the Badgers, while Rory Patterson added 18 more. The Badgers also torched the nets against the Griffins, making 67 percent of their shots while MacEwen connected on just 32 percent of their field goal attempts. The following evening, the Badgers held off the Green River (Wash.) Community College out of Auburn, Wash., 86-77. Farias once again led the way with 20 points and seven assists, while Ryan Brimley stepped up with 14 points which included four three-pointers for the Badgers. Finally, on Saturday, the Badgers completed their sweep in the tournament with an 84-67 pasting of Edmonds C.C. (Wash.), located in Lynnwood, Wash. Patterson was the Badgers’ statistical star as he scored 21 points and snared seven rebounds while the Badgers committed only 12 turnovers. Additionally, Snow’s defense rose to the occasion as they limited the Tritons to 36 percent shooting from the field. The Badgers, who have now won six of their last seven contests, including five consecutive victories will next travel to the Triniad (Colo.) Tournament Friday and Saturday Dec.7 and 8.

The Kanosh Fire Department was assisted by the Meadow and Fillmore Fire Departments and were able to contain the blaze to the south part of the home. No information is available as to the cause of the fire.

Chalmers' Big Second Half Stonewalls USC

Published on December 03, 2007 at 12:19AM

LOS ANGELES-Although Mark Mangino and the Kansas Jayhawks’ football program deserve the glut of the headlines for their berth in the Orange Bowl, Bill Self’s basketball squad showed it is worthy of recognition as well. Mario Chalmers amassed 17 of his 20 points in the second half as the #4 Jayhawks squeaked out a tough game against the #24 USC Trojans, 59-55 at the Galen Center Sunday afternoon. Chalmer’s biggest shot occurred when he hit a 26-foot three pointer with 20 seconds left to keep the Trojans at bay. Notwithstanding his 19 points to lead the Trojans, freshman standout O.J. Mayo hit just six of his 21 shots, as USC’s six-game winning streak came to a halt. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks’ perfect season ensued as they improved to 7-0 with the close call. In other Top 25 action Sunday, #8 Texas edged #1 UCLA, 63-61, and Arizona handled #9 Texas A&M, 78-67.

Orlando Ensues in "Magic"-al Run By Gashing Lakers

Published on December 03, 2007 at 12:12AM

LOS ANGELES-Rashard Lewis had 18 points and seven assists and Hedo Turkoglu proved instrumental in a key 9-0 run with a three-pointer in the fourth quarter which gave the Orlando Magic the lead for good in a 104-97 win over the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday night at Staples Center. The win was significant for the Magic as they had not won only nine of 30 matchups against the Lakers since making their NBA debut in 1990. Under new head coach Stan Van Gundy, the Magic are 15-4 to start the season, which matches the best start in franchise history set on two separate occasions in the mid-‘90’s. Lamar Odom had 19 points and 17 rebounds to pace the Lakers, but it was still their offensive deficiency, which doomed Los Angeles, as the Magic improved to 11-0 on the season when holding an opponent below the century mark. In other NBA action Sunday, Boston humbled Cleveland, 80-70, Indiana surged past the Los Angeles Clippers, 101-95, San Antonio smacked Portland, 100-79, Detroit hammered New Jersey, 118-95, Phoenix outgunned New York, 115-104, Denver smoked Miami, 115-89, and Golden State stymied Seattle, 109-96.

Tatupu's Hat Trick Leads Seahawks To Key Win At Philly

Published on December 03, 2007 at 12:03AM

PHILADELPHIA-Lofa Tatupu amassed three interceptions, including two in the first quarter which set up a pair of short touchdowns as the Seattle Seahawks held on for a convincing 28-24 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field. The weather conditions in southeastern Pennsylvania were rife with fog and rain, which bode well for the visitors from Puget Sound as Tatupu’s first two interceptions set up a touchdown pass from Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck to Bobby Engram and a two-yard scoring run by Shaun Alexander for a 14-10 lead for Seattle after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Hasselbeck ensued in his excellence as he hit Nate Burleson on a 43-yard scoring toss, while the Eagles countered when QB A.J. Feeley hit former Snow College star Kevin Curtis (six receptions, 111 yards, TD) for a 24-yard touchdown pass to keep things tight at 21-17 at intermission. The Seahawks regained the lead after falling behind 24-21 when do-everything tailback Brian Westbrook had a 29-yard touchdown run when Maurice Morris scored from 45 yards out and Tatupu obtained his third pick in the closing moments when the Eagles were in scoring position after Westbrook’s 64-yard punt return. The victory was crucial for Mike Holmgren’s Seahawks as they kept themselves in first place in the NFC West as they lead the vastly-improved Arizona Cardinals (whom they play next weekend in Seattle) by two games in the division and perhaps may be able to obtain a first-round bye in the upcoming NFC playoffs if Green Bay stumbles after Brett Favre’s injury sustained last Thursday against Dallas. In other NFL action Sunday, Tennessee got past Houston, 28-20, Indianapolis held off Jacksonville, 28-25, San Diego smacked Kansas City, 24-10, St. Louis battered Atlanta, 28-16, the New York Jets smoked Miami, 40-13, Minnesota obliterated Detroit, 42-10, Buffalo edged Washington, 17-16, Carolina ripped San Francisco, 31-14 as the Panthers quizzically won just their first home game of the season, Arizona surged past Cleveland, 27-21, Oakland gashed Denver, 34-20, the New York Giants humbled Chicago, 21-16, Tampa Bay demoralized New Orleans, 27-23, and Pittsburgh slogged past Cincinnati, 24-10. The Monday Night Football game this weekend features the New England Patriots battling the Baltimore Ravens.

Brennan Bests BCS Skeptics in Hawaii Victory

Published on December 02, 2007 at 01:40AM

HONOLULU-Colt Brennan (42-50, 442 yards, five TD’s) had perhaps his best performance of the season as the #12 Hawaii Warriors eradicated two 21-point deficits as they remained the only unbeaten team in Division I with a 35-28 victory over the gutsy Washington Huskies Saturday evening at Aloha Stadium. Although the Huskies were outgained significantly (538-402), they built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter primarily behind a cavalcade of turnovers the Warriors committed. However, once Brennan hit his stride (he at one time hit 20 consecutive passes), June Jones’ run-n-shoot offense soon proved unstoppable. The Warriors finally seized momentum for good when Brennan hit Jason Rivers (14 receptions, 167 yards, four TD’s) on a 40-yard strike to tie the score at 28-28, while Ryan Grice-Mullin caught the pass that proved to win the game for Hawaii from five yards out with 44 seconds left in regulation. Nevertheless, the Huskies were far from dead as freshman phenom Jake Locker hit Marcel Reece on a 49-yard pass to set Washington up on the goal line. However, Locker then threw a pick to cornerback Ryan Mouton that sealed the deal and sent a sellout crowd in excess of 50,000 into a frenzy. In a season of constant flux in the BCS, Hawaii has proven to be the one constant and perhaps will be rewarded with a berth in a BCS bowl. Thus, they are more than deserving for such an honor. In other Top 25 action Saturday, #9 Oklahoma stoned #1 Missouri, 38-17 in the BIG 12 championship game, Pittsburgh shocked #2 West Virginia, 13-9, #6 Virginia Tech surged past #11 Boston College, 30-16 in the ACC championship game, #7 LSU humbled #14 Tennessee, 21-14 in the SEC championship game, #8 USC ripped UCLA, 24-7, #13 Arizona State held off Arizona, 20-17, Oregon State beat #17 Oregon, 38-31 in overtime and #19 Brigham Young smoked San Diego State, 48-27.

'Zags Edge Huskies In Shootout

Published on December 02, 2007 at 12:49AM

BOSTON-Although the #19 Gonzaga Bulldogs have traversed great distances this season, Mark Few’s team continues to rack up the wins. In their latest win (their seventh of the season against just one loss), the Bulldogs received 23 points from Jeremy Pargo in an 85-82 win over Connecticut Saturday evening at the TD Banknorth Garden. Pargo made a triumvirate of clutch shots down the stretch, while clutch free-throw shooter Austin Daye also sank a pair of foul shots for Gonzaga in that span. A.J. Price had 24 points for the Huskies, who kept things close until the bitter end as they put forth a great effort for former UCONN star Ray Allen, who currently plays for the Celtics. In other Top 25 action Saturday, #2 North Carolina got past Kentucky, 86-77, #5 Georgetown handled Fairfield, 61-49, #7 Duke outlasted Davidson, 79-73, #10 Louisville held off Miami (Ohio), 47-44, #11 Pittsburgh sunk Toledo, 78-52, #13 Michigan State blitzed Jacksonville, 80-51, #15 Indiana humbled #22 Southern Illinois, 64-51, #16 Butler waxed Ohio State, 65-46, #18 Clemson surged past South Carolina, 85-74, #21 Villanova hammered Pennsylvania, 87-61, #23 Brigham Young smacked Portland, 78-54, and #25 Xavier decimated Belmont, 90-49.

Kings Spoil Adelman's Return To Sac-Town

Published on December 02, 2007 at 12:37AM

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Kevin Martin and Ron Artest amassed 26 points apiece and the Sacramento Kings spoiled Rick Adelman’s return to Arco Arena with a 107-99 victory over the Houston Rockets Saturday night. Sacramento seized the league for good in the third quarter, notwithstanding Tracy McGrady’s prolific performance as he scored 28 of his 40 points in the second half. Down the stretch, the Kings cemented the lead in the fourth quarter by nailing 13 of their 15 free throw attempts and improved to 6-3 at home on the season. Regrettably, the Kings have yet to win a road game, so they have their work cut out for them once they leave the friendly confines of Arco. In other NBA action Saturday, Washington edged Toronto, 101-97, New Jersey got past Philadelphia, 94-92 in overtime, New Orleans humbled Dallas, 112-108 in overtime, Memphis smoked Minnesota, 109-80, Chicago smacked Charlotte, 111-95, and Detroit blitzed Milwaukee, 117-91.

Butler Wins Easily in Tops of Mountains Bowl Classic

Published on December 01, 2007 at 11:13PM

SALT LAKE CITY-Beau Johnson amassed 236 yards on 29 carries and four scores as the #2 Butler Grizzlies became the unofficial national champions of junior college football as they embarrassed the #1 Snow Badgers 56-27 in the Tops of the Mountains Bowl Classic Saturday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The game began under incessant snowfall as the yard markers were barely discernible in the first half. Despite this, the Grizzlies amassed 21 points as Johnson and fellow tailback Randell Bell had scoring runs while QB Mike Garrison (9-15, 233 yards, three TD’s) hit Wayne Bonner on a 23-yard strike for a 21-13 lead at intermission. Although the Badgers drew to within 15 points twice in the second half, costly mistakes and Johnson’s excellence (three touchdowns in the second half) enabled the Grizzlies, based in El Dorado, Kan., to breeze to the easy victory. The loss capped off what was a disastrous week for the Badgers, as three players were arrested and the team seemed uncharacteristically distracted and emotionally flat for much of the game. Niu Takai did have a solid performance for the Badgers, however, as he amassed 138 yards on 35 rushes.
