MEMPHIS, Tenn.-Derrick Rose had 17 points and six rebounds in his collegiate debut as the #3 Memphis Tigers started out their season on the right foot by decimating the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, 102-71 Monday evening at the FedEx Forum. Rose (8-16 from the field in a performance which included four dunks) and Chris Douglas-Roberts (28 points, eight rebounds) enabled the Tigers to keep their composure after the Skyhawks used a hot start to bolt out to a 23-19 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. From that point on, Memphis went on an 18-1 run and proceeded to score the second half’s first 17 points to make the game a laugher. Lester Hudson led all scorers with 35 points for the Skyhawks.

DALLAS-Jason Terry had 31 points and continued to excel in his new role as the Mavericks’ sixth man as Dallas defeated the Houston Rockets, 107-98 Monday evening at American Airlines Center. When Mavs stars Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard were saddled with foul trouble in the third quarter, he ran off seven consecutive points while in the fourth quarter, he personally erased a five-point deficit to the Rockets with 10 consecutive points to give Dallas a five-point advantage. Howard added 21 points for the Mavericks while swingman Jerry Stackhouse had 16 more for Dallas on his 33rd birthday. This was Houston’s first loss of the season, but the Rockets still received a stellar performance from their star Tracy McGrady as he scored 35 points and dished out eight assists, but made only 12 of his 31 shots while Yao Ming pitched in with 21 points and 11 boards for the Houston.

Steelers Sparkle On Diamond Anniversary

PITTSBURGH-Ben Roethlisberger completed 13 of 16 passes for 209 yards and tied a franchise record with five touchdown passes (each of which came in the first half) as the Pittsburgh Steelers smacked the Baltimore Ravens, 38-7, Monday night at Heinz Field. The Ravens did themselves no favors as they turned the ball over four times in the first half, with all of these miscues resulting in Pittsburgh touchdowns. This was also an emotional night for the Steelers, as they wore vintage throwback uniforms while a national-television audience witnessed the commemoration of their 75th year of existence and numerous greats of the past such as Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, John Stallworth and Mel Blount were in attendance to watch the modern-day Steelers win big. Additionally, this proved to be Pittsburgh’s 12th consecutive win at home on Monday Night, with their last loss coming in October of 1991 at the hands of the New York Giants. Ravens signal-caller Steve McNair had a night worth forgetting as he completed 13 passes, which went for a meager 63 yards, an anemic mark which set an NFL record for futility. The Steelers are now 6-2 on the season, but will face a stiff test Sunday at Heinz Field as they entertain the Cleveland Browns who are only a game behind Pittsburgh in the AFC North with a mark of 5-3, while the Ravens will return to Baltimore and host divisional foe Cincinnati.
