Pack Outgun Aggies in WAC Shootout
Published on November 02, 2007 at 10:33PM
LAS CRUCES, N.M.-Colin Kaepernick had 378 all-purpose yards accounting for all five of Nevada’s touchdowns and Luke Lippincott rushed for 144 more yards as the Nevada Wolf Pack held off the New Mexico State Aggies, 40-38 Friday night at Aggie Memorial Stadium in a game which featured a combined 1,038 yards of offense. The win drew the Wolf Pack to within one victory of bowl eligibility but it was a hard-fought fight until the end. New Mexico State was led by QB Chase Holbrook who in his proficient performance (34-48, 408 yards, 4 TD’s) kept the Pack defense on their heels throughout the evening. Early on, it looked as if Nevada would blow the game open as they took a 20-10 lead going into the locker room at halftime. However, in a madcap second half, the lead changed hands six times until Nevada finally wrested it back when Kapernick hit wideout Mike McCoy on a 31-yard strike with a minute left in regulation. The Aggies still had a pulse as Holbrook adroitly used the clock and swiftly moved them into field goal range. Nevertheless, their hopes were dashed when Paul Young missed a 44-yard kick horrifically with three seconds left in regulation. With the win, the Pack now have a bye to prepare for nationally-ranked and potential BCS buster Hawaii, whom they host in two weeks at Reno, Nev. A win over the Warriors would for all intents and purposes ensure the Pack a berth in a bowl game.

Published on November 02, 2007 at 12:06AM
SEATTLE-Kevin Durant had a game-high 27 points in only his second NBA game, but it wasn’t enough as the Phoenix Suns won going away, 106-99 over Durant’s SuperSonics Thursday evening at Key Arena. The SuperSonics had great success in the first half as Durant had 18 of his points while Damien Wilkins hit a burzzer-beating three pointer to give Seattle a 58-55 lead at intermission. Nevertheless, the Suns turned the tide late in the third quarter when former Dixie State star Marcus Banks hit four successive three-pointers to open up an 82-77 lead early in the fourth period which Phoenix would not relinquish. Additionally, the Suns received double-figure scoring performances from all starters, except for Raja Bell with Amare Stoudemire leading the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds. New Suns starter Grant Hill acclimated nicely into the Phoenix attack as he amassed a respectable 13 points and six rebounds, while floor general Steve Nash had 18 points and 12 assists for the Suns. In addition to Durant’s production, the SuperSonics also benefited from the performance of Chris Wilcox who had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Seattle. In other NBA action Thursday, Houston humbled Utah, 106-95, and Detroit smacked Miami, 91-80
