Hokies Sting Ga. Tech in ATL

Published on November 01, 2007 at 09:44PM

ATLANTA-Sean Glennon completed 22 of 32 passes for 296 yards and two scores while running for another as the #11 Virginia Tech Hokies smoked Georgia Tech, 27-3 Thursday evening at Bobby Dodd Stadium in ACC action. The Yellow Jackets didn’t do themselves any favors as they committed six turnovers including four interceptions from starting QB Taylor Bennett. The Hokies also resuscitated their anemic running game as Branden Ore and Jahre Cheesman each had over 80 yards on the ground. The win was crucial for Virginia Tech as the win over the Yellow Jackets erased the debilitating loss to Boston College last Thursday and brought them into a first-place tie in the ACC’s Coastal Division with cross-state rival Virginia. James Johnson had seven receptions for 134 yards for the Yellow Jackets.

Published on November 01, 2007 at 11:42AM

(RICHFIELD) – The Sevier County Sheriff’s Department is tightening control of illegal dumping of trash in the county. Information Officer, Nate Curtis, said that three people from Salina were arrested recently for dumping trash in The Gap east of Salina. Those arrested were 35-year old, Freddy Vasquez, 39-year old, Cristino Valenzo and 26-year old, Noe Viegas. Their truck was also impounded. Curtis said that it’s illegal to dump trash anywhere in the county except at the landfill. He said the problem is ongoing and is asking for the public’s help in reporting illegal dumping. He said the sheriff’s office needs license plate numbers, descriptions of vehicles, number of subjects and clothing descriptions.

(Manti) The Manti city council has passed an amendment to the organic recycling ordinance establishing fines for those who abuse the recycling center. According to the council, they continue to have problems with people leaving prohibited items at the facility north of town. There have also been reports of dumping by people living outside of Manti, which is prohibited. Signs have been posted, and now a seven-hundred-and-fifty dollar fine will be levied against those who are found leaving unauthorized items.

Hatch angry at slow confirmation

Published on November 01, 2007 at 11:28AM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Orrin Hatch today spoke on the Senate floor regarding Judge Michael Mukasey, Pres. Bush’s nominee to be Attorney General of the United States. Hatch commented that the confirmation process has taken too long and it’s as if Judge Mukasey has wandered 40 days into the partisan wilderness. Hatch said that in the past, the Senate had confirmed Democratic nominees within three weeks of the nomination and wonders why it’s taking so long to confirm Mukasey when he has the credentials to perform his duties. Senators Leahy and Schumer have questioned Mukasey’s views on coercive interrogation in the use of waterboarding as a means of torture for captured terrorists.

Stolen seismic equipment reported

Published on November 01, 2007 at 10:42AM

(BEAR VALLEY JUNCTION) – The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help for information on locating stolen seismic testing equipment. The equipment was stolen last weekend at the culverts in the Bear Valley Junction area on SR-24. Deputies describe the items as two non-descript aluminum data capture boxes that look like car stereo amplifiers along with some cords with sensors on them. One cord looks like a long orange extension cord and the other cord has some spikes set at intervals along the cord. The value of the equipment is set at about $21,000 and is specific to seismic equipment. If you have any information on the stolen equipment, you’re asked to call the Sheriff’s Office.
