Rockies Hang Tough but Still Bow to BoSox

Published on October 25, 2007 at 10:36PM

BOSTON-Curt Schilling surrendered only four singles and a pair of walks in 5 1/3 innings of work as the Boston Red Sox inched all the closer to their second world championship in two years with a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies led 1-0 after one inning of play after Todd Helton’s sacrifice fly brought Willy Taveras home, but from that time on Schilling imposed his will upon the potent Colorado lineup. After Jason Varitek hit a sacrifice fly of his own to tie things at 1 apiece, Mike Lowell’s fifth-inning double gave the Red Sox the lead that they would not relinqish. Jonathan Papelbon obtained the save for Boston, who will seek to gain a commanding 3-0 lead in this series when it resumes with Game 3 Saturday evening at Coors Field in Denver with opening pitch occurring around 6:00 p.m. MDT.

Lobos Seize Second Place in Mountain West By Grounding Air Force

Published on October 25, 2007 at 10:25PM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-Rodney Ferguson had 42 carries for 150 yards and two scores as the New Mexico Lobos took sole possession of second place in the Mountain West with a 34-31 victory over the Air Force Falcons Thursday night at University Stadium. The Lobos’ opportunistic defense also forced five turnovers which resulted in 18 New Mexico points. Still, the Falcons were in it until the end primarily because of the excellence of do-everything tailback Chad Hall who amassed 175 all-purpose yards and a pair of scores. Next weekend, the Lobos seek to retain their current success when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas to battle the Texas Christian Horned Frogs. New Mexico QB Donovan Porterie also threw for 172 yards and two scores in the win.

Hatch votes to confirm Southwick

Published on October 25, 2007 at 10:44AM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Orrin Hatch has joined a majority of his fellow Senators in voting to confirm Judge Leslie Southwick to the Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Hatch said that Southwick’s nomination has been stalled since January and commented that Judge Southwick should have been given better treatment. Hatch said that enough Democrats voted with Republicans to overcome a procedural hurdle, with a 62-35 vote, to enable the Senate to give Southwick a straight up-or-down vote of 59-38. He said that Judge Southwick is one of the finest judges he’s seen in his entire career in the Senate and hopes the up-or-down vote will indicate a trend of fairer treatment toward judicial nominees.
