Enigmatic Utes Demoralize Louisville

Published on October 05, 2007 at 09:48PM

Louisville, Ky.-In the latest exhibition of what has been a Jekyll and Hyde season for the Utah Utes, Kyle Whittingham’s squad amassed 582 yards of offense against an embattled Louisville defense in a 44-35 win over the Cardinals Friday evening at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. This was only the latest twist in a season for the Utes which has seen them decimate #11 UCLA 44-6, only to lose their first two games in Mountain West play, including a 27-0 defeat at the hands of Nevada-Las Vegas. Brian Johnson, in his second consecutive start after suffering a separated shoulder in the season opener at Oregon State threw for 312 yards and a touchdown for the Utes while Darrell Mack amassed three rushing scores as well for Utah. For the Cardinals, their Heisman-candidate QB Brian Brohm was brilliant in defeat as he threw for 467 yards (361 of which came in the second half alone) and four touchdowns although the deficit was too insurmountable to overcome as the Utes led by 20 points twice in the course of the game. Kicker Louie Sakoda iced the game for the Utes when he nailed a 46-yard field goal with 1:13 left to play in regulation and for the second time this season, the Utes got the better of a BCS opponent. Interestingly, Utah has scored 44 points in each of those instances. Box Score (Final)
