Hornets Majestically Return to New Orleans in Win Over Kings

NEW ORLEANS-After an NBA season a year ago in which the New Orleans Hornets played all of their home games in Oklahoma City, returning home was a red letter occasion. With league commissioner David Stern on hand to address a crowd of 15,188 spectators, the Hornets stung the Sacramento Kings, 104-90 Wednesday evening, giving former NBA All-Star, New Mexico State coach and actor Reggie Theus a loss in his NBA coaching debut. Chris Paul had 22 points and 12 assists in the victory for the Hornets, while New Orleans torched the nets by shooting nearly 51 percent from the field on the night. John Salmons had 22 points, nine assists and three steals for the Kings who made a late surge to make the final margin of defeat respectable, but Sacramento’s lack of depth proved to be a stumblingblock toward their success, Theus said. In other NBA action Wednesday, Indiana surged past Washington, 119-110 in overtime, Orlando smacked Milwaukee, 102-83, Toronto got past Philadelphia, 106-97, New Jersey humbled Chicago, 112-103 in overtime, Dallas decimated Cleveland, 92-74, San Antonio edged Memphis, 104-101, and Denver rolled over Seattle, 120-103.

College Predictions: Week 10

Published on October 31, 2007 at 05:07PM

Colorado State vs. Brigham Young: After a slow start to the season, the Cougars continue to impress on the field of play. Quarterback Max Hall has thrown for 2,130 yards, 14 TD’s and nine INT’s on the season while Harvey Unga has amassed nearly 1,100 all-purpose yards on the season and has seven scores. The Rams counter with Damon Morton who has five touchdowns on the year while averaging 21 yards per reception. CSU signal-caller Caleb Hanie has been accurate completing 63 percent of his passes for nearly 1,600 yards and 11 touchdowns, but has also made costly mistakes, by throwing 13 interceptions thus far. Brigham Young is clearly the class of the Mountain West so I expect the Cougars to win, 38-24.

Utah State vs. Fresno State: The frustrating season ensues for the Aggies as they remain winless while they must travel to Fresno, Calif. this weekend and battle a stout Fresno State squad. The Bulldogs have thrived behind the stellar quarterback play of Tom Brandstater who has thrown for 1,511 yards, seven touchdowns and four picks. Bear Pascoe has been a solid target at TE as he’s amassed four touchdowns while averaging nearly 13 yards per reception. In the running game, the Bulldogs are also solid as Ryan Mathews has 645 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the season. Utah State, as always is led by QB Leon Jackson III (1,200 all-purpose yards, eight TD’s) but his excellence won’t be enough to make this a compelling ballgame. The Aggies will get blown out in this one. Call the final Fresno State 4 5 Utah State 24.

Idaho State vs. Weber State: The Wildcats are now an exciting offensive juggernaut after defeating Portland State, 73-68 and will entertain the Idaho State Bengals in Ogden this Saturday. QB Cameron Higgins (1,047 yards, nine TD’s, six INT’s) is coming into his own for the Wildcats, but as always their defense will face a stiff challenge in the Bengals. Idaho State is led by QB Russel Hill who has thrown for nearly 1,400 yards and 10 TD’s. Nevertheless, he is turnover prone as he’s tossed 13 interceptions. Josh Barnett is also a solid tailback for ISU as he’s run for 804 yards and two scores on the season. Weber’s riding a little momentum so I’ll give the Wildcats a 24-17 win in this one.

Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo vs. Southern Utah: Again, the Thunderbirds are in way over their heads in this one. John Madden would be pleased with his alma mater as the Mustangs boast a quarterback in Jonathan Dally who has thrown for 1,840 yards, 23 TD’s and just one interception on the season. He has a legitimate deep threat as well in Ramses Barden who has 47 receptions and 15 scores while amassing nearly 27 yards per catch. Thus, the Mustangs will be able to score points in bunches in this one. Jeremy Edwards remains the Thunderbirds’ sole star as he now has five touchdowns on 22 receptions for Southern Utah. In this one, expect a lot of Dally to Barden as the Mustangs win big, 45-10.

BBB warns of relief scams

Published on October 31, 2007 at 10:30AM

(SALT LAKE CITY) – Americans making donations to the relief efforts of the wildfires in Southern California are being asked by the Better Business Bureau to be careful. BBB President, Jane Driggs, says to check out those who come calling at your door. Driggs says that with every natural disaster, there are some unscrupulous people who will attempt to take advantage of the public’s eagerness to help victims. She commented to be wary of charities that are reluctant to answer reasonable questions about their operations, finances and programs. Don’t give in to excessive pressure for on-the-spot donations. Be wary of any request to send a “runner” to pick up your donation. Driggs also said that if you’re suspicious, call the Salt Lake Better Business Bureau for information.

The Jazz also made a respectable 46 percent of their shots in the ballgame, while outrebounding the Warriors, 56-37. Baron Davis had 25 points and 10 assists for Golden State in a losing effort. Citation dismissed by court

Published on October 30, 2007 at 10:12AM

(GUNNISON) – A Richfield truck driver cited for rolling an oil tanker on SR-28 north of Gunnison on Oct. 6, has been cleared by a court. Michael Patey was driving a 2000 Peterbilt tanker truck when he pulled to the right of the highway to allow another vehicle to pass him. The pup on the back of his trailer hit the gravel, broke loose and rolled over on its side. UHP Trooper, Lance DeGraw, cited Patey for unsafe lane travel but Patey pled his case before the Sanpete County Justice Court, saying the other vehicle cut him off, causing him to pull too far over to avoid killing them both. The court agreed and dismissed the violation. Patey was fired from the trucking company because of the accident and is now working for another company. He claimed he had a perfect driving record with the company he was working for.

Jennings Scores Big in Pack's First Win At Mile High

DENVER-Greg Jennings caught an 82-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage in overtime as the Green Bay Packers continued in their magnificent start to the season with a 19-13 victory over the Denver Broncos Monday evening at Invesco Field at Mile High. Favre, (21-27, 331 yds, 2 TD’s) had never thrown a touchdown pass in Denver nor won a game in the Mile High City but that swiftly changed when in the 1st Quarter facing a 7-0 deficit he hit rookie wideout James Jones on a 79-yard scoring strike to tie the score. The Packers also received two field goals from kicker Mason Crosby to take a 13-7 lead at intermission. The Broncos seized momentum back in the second half as Broncos QB Jay Cutler (21-33, 261 yards, TD) hit receivers Brandon Stokley and Brandon Marshall on several big plays downfield. Denver tied the score in the closing seconds when once again Jason Elam came up big with a 20-yard field goal to send things into overtime. Nevertheless, the Packers won the toss and on the following play, Favre ripped the Broncos’ hearts out with his strike to Jennings. The win for the Packers was their first overtime victory on the road since they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football in 1983. This game is best remebered as Howard Cosell’s last broadcast before retirement.Next week, Green Bay faces another AFC West opponent on the road as they battle the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City, Mo. while the Broncos travel to Detroit to challenge the resurgent and underrated Detroit Lions.

Badgers Evade Artichokes to Remain Unbeaten

Published on October 28, 2007 at 11:17AM

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.-Joe Phillips nailed three field goals, each of which were crucial to victory as the Snow Badgers remained unbeaten on the season with a hard-fought 22-9 victory over the Scottsdale Artichokes Saturday evening. The Badgers received their stiffest test of the season against the Artichokes as SCC surrendered only 210 offensive yards to an offense that came into the contest averaging 462 yards per contest. Snow broke the game open when Tu Tui blocked and recovered a punt in the Scottsdale end zone which gave the Badgers the final margin of victory. As for the Snow defense, they only allowed 185 yards to an Artichokes squad which lost its starting quarterback, Cody Bruns to injury in the third quarter but still remained competitive until the end. Next week, the Badgers host the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters in a game which has both WSFL and national championship implications. Kickoff takes place at noon on Saturday Nov.3 at Stoddard Field at Badger Stadium in Ephraim. The game can be heard on KMTI-AM 650 or online at www.kmtiradio.com

BOSTON-Curt Schilling surrendered only four singles and a pair of walks in 5 1/3 innings of work as the Boston Red Sox inched all the closer to their second world championship in two years with a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies led 1-0 after one inning of play after Todd Helton’s sacrifice fly brought Willy Taveras home, but from that time on Schilling imposed his will upon the potent Colorado lineup. After Jason Varitek hit a sacrifice fly of his own to tie things at 1 apiece, Mike Lowell’s fifth-inning double gave the Red Sox the lead that they would not relinqish. Jonathan Papelbon obtained the save for Boston, who will seek to gain a commanding 3-0 lead in this series when it resumes with Game 3 Saturday evening at Coors Field in Denver with opening pitch occurring around 6:00 p.m. MDT.

Lobos Seize Second Place in Mountain West By Grounding Air Force

Published on October 25, 2007 at 10:25PM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-Rodney Ferguson had 42 carries for 150 yards and two scores as the New Mexico Lobos took sole possession of second place in the Mountain West with a 34-31 victory over the Air Force Falcons Thursday night at University Stadium. The Lobos’ opportunistic defense also forced five turnovers which resulted in 18 New Mexico points. Still, the Falcons were in it until the end primarily because of the excellence of do-everything tailback Chad Hall who amassed 175 all-purpose yards and a pair of scores. Next weekend, the Lobos seek to retain their current success when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas to battle the Texas Christian Horned Frogs. New Mexico QB Donovan Porterie also threw for 172 yards and two scores in the win.

Officers say the it could have happened up to thirty-six hours before it was discovered. Officers are also investigating the cause of the rollover.

Hatch votes to confirm Southwick

Published on October 25, 2007 at 10:44AM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Orrin Hatch has joined a majority of his fellow Senators in voting to confirm Judge Leslie Southwick to the Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Hatch said that Southwick’s nomination has been stalled since January and commented that Judge Southwick should have been given better treatment. Hatch said that enough Democrats voted with Republicans to overcome a procedural hurdle, with a 62-35 vote, to enable the Senate to give Southwick a straight up-or-down vote of 59-38. He said that Judge Southwick is one of the finest judges he’s seen in his entire career in the Senate and hopes the up-or-down vote will indicate a trend of fairer treatment toward judicial nominees.

Red Sox End Rockies' Hot Streak in Big Win

Published on October 24, 2007 at 10:39PM

BOSTON-Julio Lugo had three RBI, while Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Jason Varitek and J.D. Drew added two more apiece as the Boston Red Sox decimated the Colorado Rockies, 13-1 in Game 1 of the World Series at Fenway Park. Josh Beckett was also solid for the Red Sox as he surrendered just six hits and one run in seven innings of work. Obviously, the Rockies were rusty as after sweeping their two series in the National League playoffs, they had received eight off days which enabled the Red Sox to make quick work of them. Colorado pitcher Jeff Francis had one of his worst outings of the season as he was shelled for six runs and 10 hits in four innings of work while Boston continued its onslaught after his departure. Still, all is not lost for the Rockies, who had won 21 of 22 games coming into this series, as they trail just 1-0 and can have three consecutive home games if they steal Game 2 on the road. Game 2 will be Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. MDT from Boston.

Utah College Predictions

Published on October 24, 2007 at 04:43PM

Utah vs. Colorado State: What a difference an elite quarterback and a consistent running game makes. While Brian Johnson wasn’t at his best last week against Texas Christian, the Utes still won going away against the Horned Frogs because Darrell Mack had 100 rushing yards and pounded TCU repeatedly with his tough running. This week, they travel over to Fort Collins, Colo., to battle the Rams who are coming off their first win of the season against Nevada-Las Vegas. However, the Rams aren’t good enough to knock the Utes off as Caleb Hanie (1,490 yards, 11 TD’s, 12 INT’s) has not been consistent enough to make the CSU offense explosive. This won’t be much of a game as I expect Brian Johnson to reassume his customary excellence by tossing for 350 yards and a pair of scores as the Utes win going away, 44-24.

Louisiana Tech vs. Utah State: The Bulldogs, while not world-beaters have taken Hawaii to the limit and were extremely competitive against Boise State last Saturday, while the Aggies approach Halloween without a win to their credit. Nevertheless, USU gave the potent Nevada Wolf Pack a good game last Saturday before bowing, 31-28. Kevin Robinson (11.4 yards per reception, 377 yards) remains the Aggies’ most viable offensive weapon, while Louisiana Tech’s duo of QB Zac Champion (1,200 passing yards, 8 TD’s, 5 INT’s) and TB Patrick Jackson (five rushing touchdowns) have been excellent this season and are the primary impetuses of keeping the Bulldogs competitive. The Aggies have pride, so they’ll find a way to prevent getting blown out but ultimately, I expect La Tech to prevail in a 38-28 win.

Weber State vs. Portland State: Two of the more eccentric and famed football coaches, Ron McBride of Weber and Jerry Glanville of Portland State, lock horns in this Big Sky grudge match. Currently, Glanville seems to have more explosiveness offensively as QB Brian White has completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,171 yards, 10 TD’s and nine INT’s, while tailback Olaniyi Sobomehin has averaged five yards a pop while scoring six touchdowns. For good measure, receiver Kenneth Mackins has three scoring receptions while amassing 18 yards per catch. Thus, the Wildcats will have their hands full containing this Vikings’ trifecta of firepower. As the season progresses, Weber QB Cameron Higgins continues to excel, as he’s thrown for 713 yards, five TD’s and four INT’s. Nevertheless, the Vikings appear to be the better team here statistically and since I never have the opportunity to gauge I-AA teams otherwise, I’ll give PSU a 34-20 win in this one. Perhaps Glanville will even leave tickets for Rick James this time.

Southern Utah vs. North Dakota State: As I preface this prediction, let me say to my alma mater that I’m extremely sorry about this but the Thunderbirds have no chance. The Bison are the #1 team in Division I-AA and have decimated Division I foes Central Michigan and Minnesota. The Thunderbirds, of course, remain winless although they have played well several times, especially in close losses to Montana State and Youngstown State. For the Bison, QB Steve Walker has completed 74 percent of his passes for 1,415 yards 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Meanwhile, tailback Tyler Roehl ran for nearly 300 yards on the BIG 10’s Golden Gophers last Saturday and averages 7.1 yards per pop while amassing 14 rushing touchdowns. Additionally, Roehl is just five yards short of the 1,000-yard rushing plateau. With all of these elements stacked against Southern Utah, a blowout seems inevitable. For the Thunderbirds, receiver Jeremy Edwards has had a successful season as he averages nearly 19 yards per catch and has scored three touchdowns. Nevertheless, this will be a long trip to Fargo, N.D. for SUU and an even longer game. Call the final North Dakota State 64 Southern Utah 12

NFL Predictions: Week 8

Published on October 24, 2007 at 02:24PM

Updated on October 24, 2007 at 10:43PM

After a 9-5 record this past week, I’m hitting my mid-season stride and I’m ready to sneak into the playoffs with a wild card and create some postseason damage. Without further redo, I proceed to make this upcoming NFL week’s predictions.

Inidanapolis vs. Carolina: This just in: the Colts are not only a dynamic offensive football team spearheaded by the magnificence of Peyton Manning, they’re a team that can smack you in the mouth on defense as the Jaguars learned early and often last Monday night. As it is, the Colts, statistically-speaking, are a team with few flaws as offensively, they’re third in both scoring and total offense in NFL annals and sixth in both rushing and passing offense. Remarkably, Indianapolis is third in scoring defense and first against the pass. Now when the casual NFL fan thinks of the Colts, passing on both sides of the ball is the hallmark of the team’s success. While the myopic media continues to glorify Tom Brady and his run toward history, the classy Colts are epitomized as always by their stellar field general Manning, who has thrown for 1,578 yards and 11 scores in just six games. As for the Carolina Panthers, it has not been their good fortune to have the stability at quarterback that Indianapolis has experienced. Nevertheless, there is reason for optimism on Tobacco Road as 43-year old signal-caller Vinny Testaverde led Carolina to a road victory at Arizona two weeks ago. Although Testaverde thinks that incumbent David Carr will get the nod against the Colts, either way the Panthers should be in good shape at QB. That’s good news because Carolina’s traditionally-stout defense has been anything but spectacular. This will be a shootout, which naturally means I’m going with the Colts. Call the final Indianapolis 35 Carolina 24

Detroit vs. Chicago: The Lions continue to defy expectations and with every successive victory, QB Jon Kitna’s claims that Detroit can win 10 game this season seem all the more reasonable. Although they were outgained by 250 yards at the hands of the Buccaneers last week, they still gutted out a victory which shows that Rod Marinelli’s squad can find ways to win even when they’re not playing their best. Although the running game has been anemic, TB Kevin Jones promises to make this a more solid area of the Lions’ offense while Kitna has orchestrated the #7 passing offense in the NFL which averages 243 yards per game. The defense is 30th statistically, so if they can force turnovers (they’ve been +4 in the turnover battle in victories this season), they should be able to win once again. As for the Bears, they deserve credit for coming back against the Eagles, but when you allow a team to drive 97 yards for the winning score without any timeouts, that’s on the defense, so that was Philadelphia’s gaffe rather than Chicago’s success. Since Brian Griese’s insertion into the Bears lineup, the offense has been more consistent but Chicago must focus primarily on stonewalling the Lions because as we learned when these teams met earlier this season in Detroit, if it’s a shootout the Lions will win. I think Detroit’s solid enough to steal this one on the road so in a close call, I’ll call it Lions 28 Bears 24

Pittsburgh vs. Cincinnati: We now know that while the Steelers are still a solid team, they’re not necessarily ready to assume the role of an elite team. I knew that Mike Tomlin would have his struggles against a Mike Shanahan-coached team although in all fairness, his QB Ben Roethlisberger failed to sufficiently prepare against a Broncos defense which despite the final statistical tally proceeded to stymie Pittsburgh throughout much of the ballgame. Meanwhile the Bengals got themselves off the mat with a big victory over the Jets and since this game’s in Cincinnati the chance exists for the Bengals to win yet another divisional matchup against the Steelers. While Pittsburgh still ranks first in total defense in the NFL, surrendering 250 yards per game, the Broncos found success against the Steel Crew with an intermeidate passing game engineered by an excellent quarterback. Now, they face an even better QB than Jay Cutler in the Bengals’ Carson Palmer. Palmer (1,717 yards, 13 TD’s) could easily surpass the 2,000 yard mark on the season in this one as Cincinnati averages 273 passing yards per contest. Much pressure will be on the Steelers’ cornerback duo of Ike Taylor and Deshea Townsend as they were often beat on crossing routes employed by the Broncos, although the Bengals definitely prefer vertical routes with fleet-footed wideouts Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. This will be exempt of much defense as the Bengals should once again gash the Steelers and force them into an up-tempo ballgame. Since Pittsburgh fails to win many of these high-scoring affairs (due to the fact that they prepare to run the ball whenever they can) the deficit may be too insurmountable so I expect the Bengals to win in a tight one. Call it Bengals 37 Steelers 34

New York Giants vs. Miami: The NFL is ready to take its product to Europe where reportedly there are numerous fans chomping at the bit to see excellent NFL action as this game will originate from London. Because this game involves the Miami Dolphins, it’s a bit difficult to call this “excellent” action with a straight face. Despite Miami’s futility, the Britons are enraptured that they’re going to be in the UK to battle the vastly-improving Giants. The time has come in my opinion for Dolphins coach Cam Cameron to go with former Brigham Young standout John Beck at quarterback, as Cleo Lemon fails to spark the Miami offense sufficiently. The Giants, while not stellar in any particular facet of offense or defense, rank ninth in total offense and eighth in total defense, thus exemplifying the team concept to a fullness. Eli Manning’s (1,525 yards, 13 TD’s) star continues to rise and the Giants’ defense has retained its recent penchant to get to the quarterback as they sacked San Francisco signal-caller Trent Dilfer six times last Sunday. I think that the Dolphins can keep this close but Manning to receiver Plaxico Burress (eight receiving touchdowns) will become a common theme, even against a Dolphins defense (14th against the pass) which has been respectable in repelling opposing teams’ aerial attacks. Call the final Giants 27 Dolphins 20

Philadelphia vs. Minnesota: I really do like the Vikings, but Tarvaris Jackson must complete more than 45 percent of his passes if Minnesota is to continue in its progression as one of the NFL’s up and coming teams. The Eagles are as disappointed in themselves as any media figure possibly could be and Vikes coach Brad Childress was a pupil under Philly coach Andy Reid so I think the teacher will have some lessons which will be excruciatingly taught to his student. Philadelphia’s loss to the Bears was inexplicable and I believe that they’re going to come out at the H.H.H. Metrodome this Sunday and take out their frustrations on a tough yet offensively-deficient Vikings squad. Look for the Eagles (eighth in total offense) to find success against a Vikings pass defense which is still last in the NFL after Tony Romo obliterated it. In this one, I like Donovan McNabb (1,447 yards, 7 TD’s thus far) to exceed the 300-yard mark while tossing four touchdowns as the Eagles win going away, 31-14. The Vikings are still a young team on the rise but Jackson will have to show he’s the man. Against an Eagles defense that’s eighth against the run (88 yards a contest) it will be tough sledding for Adrian Peterson, so the Vikings have no chance.

Cleveland vs. St. Louis: This is the week the Rams finally get in the win column, as the Browns, last in total defense in the NFL, giving up 413 yards per game, and 30th against the run (150 yards per contest surrendered) will have to deal with Steven Jackson, who when healthy (this is the first time in a month) is among the NFL’s elite tailbacks. An effective running game can finally unleash the Rams’ surprisingly dormant offense as Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Randy McMichael should all be able to expose those defenders who will try to cover them if the running game works. Meanwhile, the Browns’ offense has also been lights out as QB Derek Anderson (1,496 yards, 14 TD’s) and receiver Braylon Edwards (29 rec, 552 yards, 7 TD’s) will expose a Rams defense that definitely isn’t anything special. However, the Browns’ defense is once again the worst in the NFL and the resurgent Rams (for this week anyway) should rally around their hard-working coach Scott Linehan to give him the initial victory of the season. Call the final Rams 41 Browns 34

Oakland vs. Tennessee: Four weeks ago, the Oakland Raiders felt pretty good about themselves after they went into Miami and smacked the pathetic Dolpins to improve to 2-1 and lead, in the interim, the AFC West. How swiftly things have cascaded downward in the past three weeks. As the Broncos and Chargers continue to improve with every passing week and the Chiefs seem to have found themselves, the Raiders are once again the division’s worst team. Regardless of the myopia of Raider Nation, things are not going to get better this season, especially with a trip looming to Nashville, Tenn. to battle the unflappable Titans. How many teams, after blowing a 25-point lead with their reserve QB, would find themselves swiftly enough to steal the game back as the Titans did last week against the Texans? I would have to think that not many teams possess that level of resolve. Many NFL purists have always said that it’s essential to run the ball and in turn to stop the run. Tennessee excels in both areas, as they’re fifth in running offense (144 yards per contest) and first against the run (technically they allow 59.7 yards but I’ll round up to 60). This enables them to have a shot even when their star QB Vince Young is banged up. Fortuitously for the Titans, Young expects to be back against the Raiders. Because Tennessee doesn’t prefer to play the up-tempo game in most cases, look for Young and tailbacks LenDale White and Chris Brown (nearly 700 yards combined on the season) to control the tempo. Call the final Titans 24 Raiders 6

Buffalo vs. New York Jets: A new era has commenced in western New York with Trent Edwards replacing J.P. Losman as the Bills’ starting quarterback. Thus, while Losman possesses a powerful arm, he was too enigmatic and inconsistent, two flaws which Edwards seems to lack. I have to admit that I marvel at the consistency this team possesses because after pulsating losses to the Broncos and Cowboys on game-clinching kicks by Jason Elam and Nick Folk, respectively threatened to decimate their season, they’ve responded positively by smacking Baltimore last weekend. While Buffalo is anything but a statistical masterpiece (they rank 18th or worse in all NFL stat categories), this is also true for the Jets, so since both of these teams are less than spectacular, I’ll go with the Bills because Edwards has beaten the Jets once already and under Chad Pennington, the Jets are a trainwreck. The best Jets action this season occurred when Pennington, WR Laveranues Coles (six receiving touchdowns on the season), punter Ben Graham and head coach Eric Mangini played football with Elmo on Sesame Street. That’s pretty pathetic. Call the final Bills 23 Jets 16

Houston vs. San Diego: Because no one knows when or where this game will occur, I’ll forego the analysis. Nevertheless, if this matchup takes place, the Chargers will win 38-27. The Texans are vastly improvng, but the Chargers are a buzzsaw that continues to pick up mometum. Nevertheless, the Texans’ future is still quite bright so Houstonians may rejoice.

Jacksonville vs. Tampa Bay: The Jaguars, while a really good team in the AFC received a crucial blow when QB David Garrard incurred an ankle injury against the Colts Monday evening. Recent reports out of Jacksonville have stated he could miss up to a month. This is terrible for the Jags because the inexperience of reserve signal-caller QB Quinn Gray prevented Jacksonville from having any offensive success against the stalwart Indy defense. Meanwhile, the defense will make it hard on the Buccaneers as they only allow 14 points per contest. Meanwhile, the Tampa defense is fifth in total defense and fifth against the pass, so points will be hard to come by in this one. However, the Buccaneers have the good fortune of superior stability at quarterback to the Jaguars, as Jeff Garcia (1,504 yards, seven touchdowns) continues to impress. Garcia should toss for about 275 yards in this game and a pair of scores. In other words, he’ll do just enough to lead the Buccaneers to victory. Call the final Buccaneers 17 Jaguars 14

Washington vs. New England: Even as the Rams obtain their first victory of the season this weekend, the Patriots shall lose their first game. Unlike the Colts, the Patriots have not yet been challenged so they’ll be astonished at how well the Redskins can play defense. Despite the fact that they were outgained by 250+ yards against the Cardinals, the stout Washington defense set up 14 of the ‘Skins 21 points last weekend and forced the Cards to attempt to win the game on a 55-yard field goal (which of course they missed). Washington ranks eighth or higher in every defensive stat category, and QB Jason Campbell continues to improve (1,181 yards, five touchdowns) and promises to be among the league’s elite quarterbacks as his career progresses. The key for the Redskins’ success offensively is to have receivers Antwaan Randle El and Santana Moss break through against a New England secondary which ranks fourth in the NFL. While the Patriots’ offense has currently been unstoppable (40 points and 433 yards, that’s first in the NFL in both categories), the Redskins have the personnel to match up with the Pats’ embarrassment of riches. Beyond that, the Redskins have taken seven consecutive games from the Patriots and New England will be looking ahead to Indianapolis. To me, this won’t be the surprise that it will to the mass media at large (remember I’ve chided them for their myopia in this column already) but the Redskins will win, 28-24.

New Orleans vs. San Francisco: This is perhaps the easiest game to handicap in the NFL this weekend as the Saints have found themselves while the 49ers continue to stumble and render all of last season’s success meaningless. Meanwhile, after a less than stellar start to the ‘07 campaign, Saints QB Drew Brees (1,394 yards, five touchdowns) is playing like the birthmark-laden gunslinger that Saints fans know and love. While Deuce McAlister is lost for the season, head coach Sean Payton is beginning to unsheath Reggie Bush, who is gradually becoming a solid NFL all-purpose player, similar to Eric Metcalf and Glyn Milburn in a previous era of the league. As for San Francisco, they rank 11th against the pass defensively, so they could have some success against Brees. However, this is the only area in which the 49ers have excelled so look for Bush to bust out in this game for about 250-275 all-purpose yards as the Saints win going away 34-13

Green Bay vs. Denver: The Packers are about to be exposed as a flawed team which has ridden an early wave of momentum to their currently successful start. They continue to struggle while running the ball (66 yards per outing, again like the Titans’ rush defense, I rounded up) and everybody’s favorite drunkard, Brett Favre continues to make an excess of stupid mistakes. For all intents and purposes, the Packers are a less stellar version of the Steelers, and we all know how the Broncos handled them at home last weekend. As for the Broncos, they’re definitely not statistical mavens themselves, but they are ready to turn the tide on the season and the reason is primarily QB Jay Cutler (1,406 yards, 7 TD’s thus far) as he has led the Broncos to rank fifth overall in total offense while they rank ninth and 11th in rushing and passing offense respectively. Finally, the Broncos are scoring touchdowns in the red zone as they were 4-4 in such situations against Pittsburgh. Additionally, on the defensive side of the ball, the Packers obviously can’t run so that puts the onus on Favre to win the game. The Broncos traditionally have stymied the overrated Favre more than any other quarterback they’ve faced as he’s completed only 51 percent of his passes against the Broncos in his career. This week, Champ Bailey should be back so things should be hard on Favre. Furthermore, Favre has never thrown a touchdown pass at Denver and that trend should continue. Sorry, cheeseheads but once again while the Broncos are sharing the national spotlight with the Rockies, they’ll make a massive statement by smacking the Packers, 34-9. These are the true Broncos, thankfully those performances which occurred before the bye are in the past where they belong. (Sorry for the unexpected burst of bias at the end, when I begin covering the NFL full-time, I’ll be objective about every team.) Until then, GO BRONCOS!!!

Hatch supports alternative farm bill

Published on October 23, 2007 at 04:36PM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Orrin Hatch offered his support on an alternative to the Farm Bill currently before Congress. The Farm Ranch Equity Stewardship and Health Act (FRESH Act) addresses past farm programs which focus on a few crops such as corn, wheat, rice, soy and cotton while leaving out other crops, that are important to Utah, such as fruits, vegetables and other specialty crops. Hatch said the new emphasis will produce a more smarter, equitable way to support American farmers. He said that Utah’s orchards should receive the same kind of protection as Iowa’s cornfields. Hatch also commented that the Fresh Act would establish a county-based revenue protection program to mitigate the damage of risks the farmer can’t anticipate such as droughts or floods. The Fresh Act adds an additional $6-billion for important environmental and conservation programs that the farmers can use to prevent soil erosion, improve water quality, create wildlife habitat and reduce greenhouse gases.

Court Facility Revenue Bonds

Published on October 23, 2007 at 04:01PM

(Manti) Election day is getting closer, and the push is on to get voters educated about the issues. The Sanpete County Commissioners are making their case for the building of a new Court Facility in Manti. At issue is the release of revenue bonds for the project. The county would issue the bonds for the construction of the building, and the state courts would pay them back through the lease agreement. According to Brian Baker, the Vice President of Public Finance for Zions Bank, the courts have chosen this route to build the facility because the traditional funding method can take a long time to negotiate.Under the agreement the bonds would be purchased by private banks as well as the Community Impact Board. According to Baker, the state has never defaulted on a payment and is one of only seven states that have a triple A rating for bond security. Sanpete County residents will have the opportunity to vote on the bond issue this November in the municipal elections.

He also said that absentee ballots can be done on Nov. 5 and general voting will be held Nov. 6 at various precincts in the local communities.

Colts Epitomize Excellence in Monday Night Romp

Published on October 22, 2007 at 10:06PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-Peyton Manning completed 23 of 37 passes for 259 yards, a touchdown and an interception as the Indianapolis Colts steamrolled the Jacksonville Jaguars, 29-7 Monday evening at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Early on, the Colts seized momentum as rushing touchdowns by Manning and rookie tailback Kenton Keith and a 36-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri gave Indianapolis a commanding 17-0 lead at intermission. To compound matters for the Jaguars, QB David Garrard (6-10, 62 yards) was lost for the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter and from that time on, reserve signal-caller Quinn Gray was unable to move the ball consistently against a stout Colts defense. Indianapolis sealed the game when DE Dwight Freeney sacked Gray in the end zone for a safety which gave the Colts a 19-7 lead. While Indianapolis receives numerous plaudits for their offensive prowess, head coach Tony Dungy’s defense was also impressive as they surrendered only 226 offensive yards to the punchless Jaguars. Next week, Indianapolis returns to the southeast as they battle the Carolina Panthers, while the 4-2 Jaguars face a tough matchup in fellow Floridian foe Tampa Bay.

Sevier School District sees enrollment increase

Published on October 22, 2007 at 11:27AM

(RICHFIELD) – The Sevier School District Enrollment Report was presented to the Board of Education in this month’s meeting showing an increase in total number of students. Superintendant, Brent Thorne, said several schools saw increases as well as decreases. He said the district has 105 more students this year than last year with Monroe Elementary showing the largest increase at 43 more students. Thorne also said that North Sevier High School continues to see a decline in the number of students which has been going on for years. The total enrollment for the Sevier School District now stands at 4568. Business Administrator, Pat Wilson, commented that the new construction and increased staff at Monroe Elementary was planned well in advance of the student influx.

Lost hunter found on West Mountain

Published on October 22, 2007 at 10:47AM

(ELSINORE) – The Sevier County Search and Rescue South Posse was called out Saturday night to look for an overdue hunter. At about 8:30pm, the posse began the search for 27-year old, Burkley Johnson of Elsinore, who was hunting on West Mountain above Elsinore. According to a sheriff’s report, Johnson was not able to get back to his four wheeler before it became dark and got lost in the attempt. He was able to use his cell phone for a while but the charge ran low. Just after midnite, posse crews and Johnson’s two friends found him in good condition at his four wheeler.

Red Sox Eliminate Tribe; Advance to Play Colorado in Fall Classic

Published on October 21, 2007 at 11:19PM

BOSTON-While many New Englanders are rejoicing in the Patriots’ dominant start to the NFL season, the Celtics’ instantaneous collection of All-star talent and Boston College’s magical college football season, the Red Sox are giving sports fans in the region something else to cheer about. Dustin Pedroia amassed five RBI, including a two-run homer as the Boston Red Sox smacked the Cleveland Indians 11-2 in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series Sunday night at Fenway Park. The victory places Boston in the Fall Classic for the second time in three years as they prepare to host the Colorado Rockies in Game 1 Wednesday Oct.24 at 6:00 p.m. MDT. The comeback from a 3-1 deficit wasn’t difficult for the Red Sox as back in 2004 they erased a 3-0 deficit to the New York Yankees en route to a World Series triumph over St. Louis that season.

Broncos Buck Steelers in Primetime

Published on October 21, 2007 at 10:33PM

DENVER-After a torturous two-week period in which they were derided and denounced by the national media (often unfairly) and overshadowed by the exploits of their cross-town brethren, the Colorado Rockies, the Denver Broncos edged the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-28 when Jason Elam nailed a 49-yard field goal as time expired Sunday evening at Invesco Field at Mile High. The Steelers took an early 7-0 lead when QB Ben Roethlisberger (24-35, 290 yards, 4 TD’s, 2 INT’s) hit TE Heath Miller on a one-yard touchdown pass although two Jay Cutler (22-29, 248 yards, 3 TD’s, 2 INT’s)scoring passes, to WR Brandon Stokley and FB Cecil Sapp respectively led to a 14-7 Broncos lead. The lead increased to 21-7 when rookie defensive tackle Tim Crowder returned a Roethlisberger fumble 50 yards for a score late in the first half. Despite this huge advantage, the Steelers managed to tie things at 28-28 late in the 4th Quarter when Roethlisberger hit Miller once again on a scoring toss, this time from 12 yards out. Nevertheless, Cutler swiftly led the Broncos into field goal range on a 49-yard drive which resulted in the third game-winning kick Elam has made for Denver this season. The Broncos’ exhilirating victory was made all the more significant when one considers that valuable starters Javon Walker and Champ Bailey were both sidelined with injuries. The win places Denver right back in the thick of things in the AFC West as they are 3-3 and host Green Bay next Monday evening. As for the Steelers, the loss was their second in as many sojourns to the Mountain time zone as they fell to the Cardinals in Glendale, Ariz. earlier this season. In other NFL action Sunday, New Orleans edged Atlanta, 22-16, Washington squeaked past Arizona, 21-19, Buffalo stunned Baltimore, 19-14, Chicago came back against Philadelphia, 19-16, Cincinnati held off the New York Jets, 38-31, Dallas thumped Minnesota, 24-14, Detroit got past Tampa Bay 23-16, Tennessee outlasted Houston in a thrilling 38-36 victory, Kansas City got by Oakland, 12-10, New England decimated Miami, 49-28, the New York Giants battered San Francisco, 33-15, and Seattle smacked St. Louis, 33-6. The Monday night game features an AFC South matchup as Indianapolis travels to Jacksonville to battle the Jaguars.

Badgers Pound Pima in Region Matchup

Published on October 20, 2007 at 06:29PM

TUCSON, Ariz.-Niu Takai had 18 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns as the Snow Badgers decimated the Pima Aztecs, 58-21 Saturday afternoon at Ampitheatre High School. The Badgers swiftly built a double-digit lead as QB Houston Erbstoesser hit receiver Adam Frandsen on a pair of touchdown tosses to help build a 21-7 lead early in the first half. From that point on, Soni Sotele (162 rushing yards and three scores) and Takai spearheaded a rushing attack which led to 383 rushing yards on the game. Overall, the Badgers amassed 518 yards of offense but once again the #1 team in the land’s stout defense defined their excellence as while they allowed 208 passing yards, they only surrendered 155 net yards because of their effectiveness against the run. Because of various sacks and high snaps, the Badgers’ defense held the Aztecs to -53 net rushing yards. Next week, Snow hits the road once again as they battle the Scottsdale Artichokes at Scottsdale, Ariz. Kickoff will take place at 7:00 p.m. MST (8:00 Utah time) and all the action can be heard on KMTI-AM 650 or online at www.kmtiradio.com.

Walker’s 154 rushing yards on the night left him with 1,055 rushing yards on the season, as Daniels added 61 yards during the game which resulted in him having 1,034 rushing yards. Additionally, Russell Christensen and Justin Stewart caught touchdown passes from QB Teejay Clawson for North Sanpete, while reserve tailback MacKenzi Brown added a 14-yard scoring run for the Hawks.

DRAPER, UTAH-Curtis Eliason had a 26-yard scoring run but it wasn’t enough as the Delta Rabbits fell to the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle, 14-6 Thursday evening. The Soaring Eagle received touchdowns from Keegan Anderson who caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Corey Lever, while Brian May also added a fumble return for a score for Juan Diego.

MANTI, UTAH-Griffin Aste completed five of his 10 passes for 83 yards and a scoring strike to David Hugentobler, while Hugentobler amassed 123 all-purpose yards as the Manti Templars shellacked the Beaver Beavers, 38-8 in the opening round of the 2A playoffs Friday afternoon. Nick Brown also stepped up big for the Templars as he returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown while returning a Beavers interception 40 yards for another score. A late touchdown permitted the Beavers to evade the shutout, but their season is over while the Templars will play Grand next weekend in Moab. This game can be heard on KMTI-AM 650.

BLANDING, UTAH-Kohler Black had 154 rushing yards on 20 carries and a score from 32 yards out as the San Juan Broncos advanced in the 2A playoffs by eliminating the Gunnison Bulldogs, 34-24 Friday night. Despite the losing effort, Heston Neal had two rushing touchdowns and caught another scoring pass from 34 yards out for the Bulldogs. With the win, San Juan advances in the 2A playoffs to face the North Summit Braves in Coalville next week. There will be no coverage of this game on the five Mid-Utah radio stations.

RICHFIELD-UTAH, Jesse Hartle had three touchdowns, including a 45-yard fumble return for a score as the Richfield Wildcats made quick work of the ALA Eagles with a 49-14 win Friday evening. Also contributing for the Wildcats were Travis Tuttle and Jake Robinson with touchdown runs, while J.D. Michaelsen added a 55-yard scoring reception. David Armendariz and Seth Weber scored touchdowns for the Eagles in a losing effort. With the win, Richfield will now battle the green-clad South Summit Wildcats in Kamas next weekend in the 2A quarterfinals. This game can be heard on KSVC-AM 980.

KANAB, UTAH-The Kanab Cowboys amassed 313 rushing yards overall, while Levi Vincent had 131 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries as Kanab blitzed the Enterprise Wolves, 31-0 Friday night. Additionally, the Cowboys received a 52-yard scoring run from Thomas Quist while Logan Mazzettia added a one-run scoring rush and returned a blocked punt three yards for another score for Bucky Orton’s Kanab squad in the season finale. The win also enabled the Cowboys to win their region title as the victory gave them a 4-0 region record as opposed to Enterprise’s 3-1 mark.

MILFORD, UTAH-Wyatt Mason amassed three touchdowns (two rushing and one on an interception return) while the North Sevier Wolves jumped out to a 30-0 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter en route to a 50-6 pasting of the Milford Tigers Friday night. The win brought the Wolves to .500 in region play with two wins against two losses while overall they have four wins along with their four defeats.

South Sanpete School District Planning For New Buildings

(Manti) The South Sanpete School District is planning for the future. There are several buildings in the district that are outdated and the district would like to replace them. According to South Sanpete Superintendent Don Hill, the district will have all of its bonds paid for by 2012, at which time they would be free to bond for the new buildings. The problem, is that the cost of construction is rising at an increasing pace. According to Hill, if the district waits it may be impossible to get the amount of funding needed. The district is apparently looking at ways to speed up the process in order to get the buildings they need.

Utah College Predictions; Week 7

Published on October 17, 2007 at 05:21PM

Updated on October 17, 2007 at 11:59PM

To premise this column, I will placate my colleagues, Mike Traina and J.D. Fox, with a Snow-Pima prediction. The Badgers will decimate the Pima Aztecs, 58-14, as Soni Sotele gets his customary 145 yards and two touchdowns, while Niu Takai will approach 100 yards rushing and add a score as well. The Badgers defense will surrender only 115 yards of total offense, but the Aztecs will score a fluke touchdown. As for Houston Erbstoesser, he’ll exceed 300 passing yards for the first time in his career while tossing three more touchdowns. There you go, I hope that was enjoyable. As for me, I will be in my LDS mission once again as I served in Tucson, Ariz. which as the county seat of Pima County is the home of Pima Community College. Now, here’s the Division I/I-AA predictions:

Eastern Washington vs. Brigham Young: Although I’m never a proponent of a Division I team playing a I-AA opponent (it’s embarrassing when an Appalachian State defeats a Michigan) as nothing can ever be gained. The Cougars, while they should roll, need to respect the Eagles based in Cheney, Wash. as they boast an identical 4-2 record to Bronco Mendenhall’s squad. Max Hall (1,974 yards, 13 TD’s, eight INT’s, a 60 percent completion percentage) continues to be excellent while Austin Collie has averaged 16 yards per reception and has scored four touchdowns for the Cougars. As for the Eagles, QB Matt Nichols has completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,837 yards while tossing for 16 touchdowns against only three interceptions. Nichols is complimented by Aaron Boyce (46 receptions, 719 yards, five touchdowns)and tailback Dale Morris who has added four rushing touchdowns. With all of that said, Bronco Mendenhall’s Cougars know the gravity of this situation and should handle Eastern Washington without too much difficulty. Call the final Brigham Young 34 Eastern Washington 20

Utah vs. Texas Christian: Outside of the conference, these teams are representing the Mountain West well as they have defeated opponents from BCS conferences left and right. Nevertheless, they both come into this showdown at the Metroplex with 4-3 records. The Horned Frogs have received more consistency from the quarterback position behind Andy Dalton who is completing 62 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,361 yards. Meanwhile, the Ute machine continues to click with Brian Johnson’s excellence, while tailback Darrell Mack (647 yards, 5.1 rushing average, five touchdowns) has been a solid asset to Johnson in making the Utah offense better. I’ll go with the Utes here because Johnson is in the zone and the Horned Frogs won’t bring him out of it. Call the final Utah 38 Texas Christian 32

Nevada vs. Utah State: The Wolf Pack, despite a record of 2-4 are among the nation’s most exciting teams as by averaging nearly 530 yards per game offensively, they rank eighth in national annals. Now, the Aggies have held their own against offensive juggernauts as they only fell 52-37 to Hawaii, but after Nevada put up 67 points on defending WAC champion Boise State last weekend, the Pistol offense, the brainchild of Nevada coach Chris Ault, should not be taken lightly. The new triggerman, Colin Kaepernick has been excellent in completing 53 percent of his passes for seven touchdowns against one interception, especially since he came in only several weeks ago for previous starter Nick Graziano. Additionally, receiver Marko Mitchell is a legitimate deep threat as he averages 22 yards per reception, so the Aggies offense (90th or worse in all statistical categories) has its work cut out for it in keeping up with the explosive ‘Pack. I think the Wolf Pack will romp all over the Aggies as the performance against the Warriors at Honolulu was a flash in the pan. Call the final. Nevada 52 Utah State 24

Northern Arizona vs. Weber State: The Wildcats are in over their heads in this one. The Lumberjacks, the pride and joy of Flagstaff, Ariz., are an offensive juggernaut which will give the Wildcats’ defense a consistent challenge throughout the game this Saturday. Lubmerjacks QB Lance Kriesien has thrown for 1,239 yards, and seven touchdowns against three interceptions this season while Lionel Scott has averaged seven yards per carry while scoring eight rushing touchdowns. The Wildcats just haven’t shown sufficient explosiveness this season, despite the fact they’ve won two consecutive games to keep up with NAU. Cameron Higgins has been an effective quarterback for Weber State (five touchdowns against just one interception) but if this becomes a track meet, the Wildcats’ chances at victory will be greatly reduced. Call the final, NAU 34 Weber State 18

UC-Davis vs. Southern Utah: The Thunderbirds almost pulled off a thrilling victory against the Youngstown State Penguins last week and impressed me in the process. Nevertheless, a loss is a loss and as it is, SUU is currently 0-6. They welcome in a Great West foe in the UC-Davis Aggies who have taken their lumps this season (they’re just 2-5) but who still possess some firepower. The Aggies are led by QB Tim Plough who has completed 64 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,355 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and receiver Brandon Rice (15 yards per reception and five touchdowns). Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds have gone to reserve QB Cody Stone who has thrown for two touchdowns and two interceptions while completing a paltry 47 percent of his passes. The Thunderbirds’ major bellcow remains Johnny Sanchez who has three rushing touchdowns on the season. As for the prediction, I’ll go with Aggies as Plough has been efficient and Rice has proven his worth as a legitimate deep threat. Call the final Cal-Davis 28 Southern Utah 14.

(Fillmore) The B-L-M will begin several prescribed burns this month near Fillmore and Scipio. The plan is to burn pinion and juniper slash piles beginning as early as Monday. The piles are the result of fuel clearing projects that have been ongoing for several years. One burn will include three hundred acres near Pioneer Canyon between Fillmore and Holden. The other will take place as a joint effort between the B-L-M the Fishlake Nation Forest and will cover twenty-one hundred acres southwest of Scipio. Weather conditions should help keep smoke to a minimum, but surrounding communities could still see some effects of the fire.

Hatch questioned Mukasey about how the Department of Justice can ramp up its prosecution of obscenity and pornography cases. Hatch said that Mukasey has given almost 40 years of service in America’s legal system and has an extensive background in terrorism issues and cases that make him specifically qualified to serve as Attorney General.

NFL Predictions: Week 7

Published on October 17, 2007 at 03:06PM

Updated on October 17, 2007 at 11:20PM

This past weekend, I complimented Commissioner Goodell in his ideal of parity as I was 7-6, but if you look at the Vikings-Bears and Patriots Cowboys final scores, it’s eerie how close I came to predicting the exact scores. I’m a much better handicapper than that savant Nostradamus could ever have hoped to be, because I know the game, better than him anyway. Well, let’s delve into this week’s selections.

Baltimore vs. Buffalo: The Ravens, after smacking the Rams decisively last Sunday appear to have recaptured much of their swagger as they ruined Gus Frerotte’s hot-streak by picking off the erstwhile veteran five times in last weekend’s victory. Kyle Boller will get his second consecutive start in the stead of Steve McNair, but finally things seem to be coming together for the former #1 draft pick from Cal-Berkeley as this season, he has passed for 471 yards and two scores. McNair will be available as an emergency quarterback, but head coach Brian Billick, who is desirous to go into the bye week at 5-2 before they play Pittsburgh on Monday Night Football Nov.5. Regardless of who the Ravens play at quarterback, Willis McGahee (525 rushing yards, 4.1 average, TD on the season) should have plenty of room to run against a Bills defense that gives up nearly 134 rushing yards per game. Meanwhile, even though Bills QB Trent Edwards has been marvelous in the stead of J.P. Losman (55-79, 507 yards, TD, INT), Baltimore’s defense is as fierce as ever, as they allow only 272 yards per game, good for fourth in the league. Thus, in this one, I’m going with the Ravens. Call the final, Ravens 23 Bills 7

Atlanta vs. New Orleans: Have the Saints turned the corner? After last week’s stunning victory at Qwest Field against the powerful Seahawks, New Orleans was excellent as they used a controlled passing attack and Reggie Bush got off the schneid with an 141-yard performance. Now, they return to what should be a raucous Superdome to host the snake-bitten Falcons. Atlanta, notwithstanding Joey Harrington’s gumption (1,279 passing yards, four touchdowns)ranks no higher than 17th in NFL annals in any statistical category, offensively or defensively. Thus, the Falcons are going nowhere, and getting there fast, and have elected to give reserve signal-caller Byron Leftwich the start this weekend. New head coach Bobby Petrino must wage weekly battles against his veteran players in order to assert his authority, and this is a counterproductive process. Once again, the Saints have found themselves apparently and Drew Brees, after tossing for 246 yards and two touchdowns in the victory at Seattle is taking much better care of the ball. I like Brees to throw for 350 yards and four touchdowns in this one as New Orleans romps, 42-23.

Tampa Bay vs. Detroit: These long-time divisonal rivals in the old NFC Central meet again, and for the first time in many years, both of these teams are experiencing succes and in my opinion, the NFL’s better for it. Stepping in to compliment the consistent Jeff Garcia (96-144, 1,188 yards, five touchdowns) is tailback Michael Bennett who arrived in a trade from Kansas City earlier this week. Nevertheless, the great chess match in this game will be the Buccaneers’ outstanding pass defense (through the air, Tampa Bay only allows 195 yards per game which is eighth in the NFL) against the Lions’ explosive passing offense (265 yards per game, good for fourth in the league). Because of the Lions’ depth at receiver and offensive coordinator Mike Martz’ sophisticated schemes, I fully expect Detroit QB Jon Kitna (114-167, 1,333 yards, eight touchdowns) to find favorable matchups against the Bucs. Thus, if this game turns into a shootout, the Buccaneers with Garcia and WR Joey Galloway should hold their own, but Detroit is good enough to win in this type of environment. I think the game will be close, but the Honolulu-blue clad Lions will emerge victorious when kicker Jason Hanson hits on a 45-yard kick in a 33-30 win.

Arizona vs. Washington: How unfair this is to the Cardinals. Even when Matt Leinart was injured, Kurt Warner filled in admirably as the new full-time starter completing his first two passes for 21 yards against the Panthers last week. Nevertheless, Warner was hurt and the usually explosive Cardinals offense sputtered behind the leadership of journeyman signal-caller Tim Rattay. Now, as the Cards travel to the greater Washington D.C. area, their quarterbacks will be Rattay and Tim Hasselbeck (Matt’s younger brother). The Redskins are not a fun team to be playing right now, particularly because of their frustration in losing a game at Green Bay last weekend that they dominated statistically. At quarterback, Washington has no such trouble as the Cardinals as Jason Campbell (88-150, 1,086 yards, five touchdowns) continues to bring stability to the position in our nation’s capital. The dynamic duo of Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts in the ‘Skins backfield has combined for nearly 500 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while fleet-footed receiver Antwaan Randle El averages 18 yards per reception. When you consider this offensive prowess, it’s also important to remember that the Redskins are third in both scoring defense and total defense, surrendering 13 points and 259 yards per game respectively. With all of this said, the Cardinals will have success rushing the ball with Edgerrin James, I believe and Ken Whisenhunt will find a way to keep this game close. Nevertheless, right now the Cards are too banged up to emerge with a victory and Washington remains as one of the great underrated teams in the NFL. Call the final, Redskins 23 Cardinals 17.

Tennessee vs. Houston: The question remains up in the air in Nashville, Tenn. this week: Will Vince Young play in a return to his hometown? Wednesday on the Mike Tirico Show on ESPN Radio, Titans coach Jeff Fisher suggested that perhaps Young would be able to rise off the mat, but if not, Tennessee will go with live-armed veteran Kerry Collins. Whoever plays quarterback for the Titans this Sunday will have the luxury of an effective rushing game as the two-headed monster in the backfield of Chris Brown and LenDale White has combined for 576 yards and four touchdowns this season. Additionally, the Titans defense is ranked sixth or better in every statistical category except for passing defense, where they rank 18th. This is where the Texans have a chance, as QB Matt Schaub (130-188, 1,558 yards, five touchdowns) remains the steal of the free-agency period this past offseason. His excellence has enabled to give the Texans the sixth-ranked passing attack in the NFL, averaging 261 yards per contest. Because I’m not sure if Young will play, I’ll go with the Texans as they have the home-field advantage, and as a much-improved team, this is the kind of game they can steal. Call the final, Texans 27 Titans 24.

New England vs. Miami: Even though I despise the Patriots and like the Dolphins, this is not a hard prediction to make. Later this season, New England will face tough teams such as the Redskins, Steelers, Colts and Ravens but the Dolphins will do little to prepare the Pats for such battles. It’s time for John Beck to get the nod in Miami, because now that receiver Chris Chambers has been dealt to the Chargers, they truly are going nowhere. Call the final Patriots 41 Dolphins 20

San Francisco vs. New York Giants: Defensively, the San Francisco 49ers are an average team, offensively, they’re far worse. Meanwhile, the New York Giants, in the midst of running off four consecutive wins, have improved to ninth overall in total defense, while amassing 359 yards per contest which is sixth in the NFL. Eli Manning (1,379 passing yards, 11 TD’s) improves consistently in his development and receiver Plaxico Burress (30 receptions, 507 yards, eight touchdowns) continues to excel despite not practicing during the week. The 49ers will be blown out because they cannot move the ball, and therefore cannot score. Meanwhile, the Giants are rapidly becoming one of the NFL’s better teams. Call the final Giants 34 49ers 16

Kansas City vs. Oakland: The Chiefs have won three of four and with a victory against the Raiders will move into first place in the AFC West at 4-3. Kansas City has found itself offensively as Damon Huard (1,293 yards, six touchdowns) is holding off the incumbent Brodie Croyle while Tony Gonzalez is now statistically the greatest tight end in NFL history. Last week against the Chargers, the Raiders once again received a lackluster performance from their offense, as they had only one touchdown in a 28-14 victory, and the Chiefs defense is good enough (10th in total defense in league annals) to lock up an opponent. Thus, I’ll go with the Chiefs in a 24-10 victory. Hopefully, the good people of Kansas City will enjoy their brief stay atop the divisional standings.

New York Jets vs. Cincinnati: These teams, one of which was a playoff team a year ago (the Jets) while the other should have been one (the Bengals) have combined for two wins thus far in ‘07. Thus, there’s lots of blame to go around, but rather than heap on negatives, I’ll predict a winner. I’ll go with the Bengals, as Carson Palmer (1,491 yards, 12 TD’s) has still been a pillar amidst the destruction that has been Cincinnati’s start to the season. He should pass for well over 300 yards again, victimizing a Jets secondary that gives up 243 yards a game. Thus, if it gets to shootout status (which it will) the Jets don’t have a chance. Call the final Bengals 45 Jets 22.

Minnesota vs. Dallas: The Vikings are gradually becoming a contender once again. Adrian Peterson’s performance last Sunday (224 yards rushing, three touchdowns against the Bears) showed just how much greatness he is capable of and the ‘Vikes are walking into a perfect situation to pull off an upset. The Cowboys are deflated after a 48-27 loss to the Patriots last Sunday as they thought they were among the NFL’s elite teams. This might be perceived by Cowboys fans in the Metroplex as an easy game, but the knowledgeable enthusiasts know that this is a ludicrous concept. The good news for Dallas is the Vikings bring the worst pass defense (288 yards per game surrendered) in the NFL into the Big D so Tony Romo should have plenty of opportunites to excel. However, I think Minnesota QB Tarvaris Jackson will find success against a Dallas secondary which Tom Brady exposed consistently last week. Of course, in the 4th Quarter, the Vikings have the best running game in the NFL (170 yards per contest) to finish off the game if they have a lead. Of course they will. Call the final Vikings 27 Cowboys 17. Minnesota might be the NFL’s next great team, just watch.

St. Louis vs. Seattle: The Rams have some potentially good news. Starting QB Marc Bulger may finally be healthy enough to overcome the struggles he faced earlier this season and play like he has in previous seasons. However, the Seahawks are seething after a shocking home loss given them by the Saints last Sunday. Matt Hasselbeck (1,510 yards, nine touchdowns) continues to keep the Seattle passing attack atop the NFL standings (eighth overall at 240 yards per game) notwithstanding the numerous injuries his receivers have faced. The Rams are just too weak and until they can prove their ability to score, let alone stop the opposition, I’m not going to pick them. Of course a healthy Bulger may revitalize this St. Louis team but until it’s proven, I will not believe. Call te final Seahawks 38 Rams 16

Chicago vs. Philadelphia: How bad can it get for the Chicago Bears? Judging by how Philadelphia seems to be amassing momentum, my guess is far worse. As Donovan McNabb(1,221 yards, six touchdowns) gets healthier with every passing week, the Eagles’ offense catches up to the impressive defense (which ranks in the Top 10 in every defensive category). The law of averages will catch up to the Eagles, and it will only further condemn the Bears as they rank no higher than 20th in any statistical department, offensively or defensively. What other team does this describe? Oh yes, the Atlanta Falcons, and we know how pathetic they are. Thus, sorry Bears, but you don’t have a chance in this one. Because Lovie Smith’s teams always play hard, the game will be close but the Eagles will win it late. Call the final Eagles 28 Bears 21.

Pittsburgh vs. Denver: Speaking of the law of averages, the Broncos will benefit from this as well. A close observance of two of the Denver losses (Jacksonville and San Diego) reveals that key calls going against the Broncos (TE Daniel Graham’s “drop” against the Jaguars on 4th down) and random big plays given up (two long touchdown runs to San Diego’s Michael Turner in the blowout at the hands of the Chargers) sealed their doom. Only against the powerful Indianapolis Colts were the Broncos truly outplayed throughout the entire game. The key to the Broncos excelling against a strong Steelers squad is surmised thusly: they must score touchdowns in the red zone and they must contain the run. Now, the Steelers bring into Denver the NFL’s second-ranked rushing attack (167 yards per game) and surrender only nine points per game defensively, but Mike Tomlin has never matched wits with Mike Shanahan before. The Broncos will break out in this game because they’ve been lambasted in the media time and time again and are a proud team with solid veteran leadership, albeit juxtaposed with good young talent. The bye week has given defensive coordinator Jim Bates ample time to resolve his concerns and I fully expect defensive studs such as Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder to begin proving their worth. Jay Cutler will also be aided by a healthy Javon Walker (he should play against the Steelers) who is a matchup nightmare for Pittsburgh judging by how he tore through the modern-day Steel Curtain for over 200 all-purpose yards when these teams met last season. This goes against the grain, as I’m ignoring the stats I usually use to confirm my outcomes but call it Broncos 31 Steelers 23 The AFC West will be tougher to win than the Chargers have previously supposed.

Indianapolis vs. Jacksonville: As voluminous as this column has been, we’ve nearly reached the end. The Colts, unbeknownst to them in all likelihood because of their consistent excellence, are in an extremely competitive division, at least appertaining to the Jaguars, Texans and Titans. Jacksonville has played Indianapolis as tough as anyone else has in the AFC and that’s something that should be commended. Perhaps the greatest thing the Colts have going for them that they’ve not had in previous seasons as in addition to an awesome offense (big surprise there) that averages 33 points and 403 yards per contest is a defense that is fifth in total defense and a respectable 13th against the run. The Jaguars are receiving much more consistency from the quarterback position as David Garrard (1,069 yards, six touchdowns) has given all Jags fans (which include one of Snow College’s defensive football coaches, Coach Anderson) the most consistency at signal-caller since the days of Mark Brunell. The strength of the Jacksonville offense is, however, the running game which is fourth at 155 yards per game. If Jacksonville behind the dynamic duo of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew can run consistently against the Colts (and I think they will), I’ll give them the win. Thus, I’ll do so, while the Colts are magnificent, traditionally the Jaguars know how to play them so I’ll give Jacksonville the win as they are tied with Indianaplolis atop the AFC South. In a close game, call it Jaguars 31 Colts 28. However, with this said, the Patriots despite the last unbeaten team are not the best team. The Colts will take care of them Nov.4. I’m out.

(RICHFIELD) – The new Cedar Ridge High School in Richfield is nearing completion. Principal, Stewart Shaver, says the new school will help teachers increase their ability to teach and create a better environment for students to learn. He says the alternative school gives students an opportunity to graduate with other students in a regular school setting. Shaver says since the school opened in 1991, 283 high school diplomas and 314 adult diplomas have been awarded. He says the school requires students to master their subjects before they receive credit and once they know that someone cares about them, they respond well.

Giants Stomp Falcons in Monday-Nighter

Published on October 15, 2007 at 10:54PM

ATLANTA-Eli Manning completed 27 of 39 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions as the New York Giants pounded the Atlanta Falcons, 31-10 Monday evening at the Georgia Dome. Behind a raucous crowd, the Falcons swiftly took a 10-7 lead in the first quarter as ageless kicker Morten Andersen hit a 47-yard field goal, and tailback Jerious Norwood had a 67-yard touchdown run. Nevertheless, before the quarter had ended, the Giants built a lead they would never relinquish when tailback Reuben Droughns scored from a yard out to cap off a six-play 82-yard drive. The Giants increased their lead to 11 points when Manning hit wideout Plaxico Burress (six receptions, 97 yards) on a 43-yard scoring toss, giving them a 21-10 lead at intermission. While the Giants offense amassed 491 offensive yards in the evening, other than Norwood’s scoring run, the defense was also up to the task as they surrendered only 284 total yards to the Falcons. The win improved the Giants’ record to 4-2 as it was their fourth consecutive victory, while the Falcons fell to 1-5 on the young season. Interestingly, this victory for New York marked the 12th consecutive time in this series that the road team has won.

Research conducted on wildland fires

(SCIPIO) – The BLM and Brigham Young University are teaming up to conduct research on reducing the potential of high intensity, large wildland fires that have scorched thousands of acres of land in the west this past summer. Karen Feary of the Richfield Interagency Fire Center said that the Valley Mountain Joint Fire Science Project will begin Tuesday, Oct. 16 and will affect only about six acres four miles northeast of Scipio. Feary said the vegetation in the prescribed burn area closely resembles vegetation in the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau consisting of sagebrush, pinyon, juniper and gamble oak. Smoke may be visible along some portions of I-15.

Richfield City changes land ordinance on split vote

Published on October 15, 2007 at 11:09AM

(RICHFIELD) – The Richfield City Council passed an ordinance last week on a 3-2 split vote changing commercial property to residential. The property is located at 801 South Cove View Road in Richfield and is owned by Dave and Beverly Urie. Their desire is to build multiple family residential housing and requested the city change the ordinance. Councilmembers Lunnen, White and Peterson all voted in favor of the ordinance change with councilmembers Poulson and Rappleye voting against. Lunnen said that he had spent more time on this ordinance change than anything he had done in the council and questioned movement of people and mixed zoning in a commercial area. Peterson said he couldn’t figure out why the property was commercial in the first place. Councilmember Poulson said he was concerned about the safety factors with family dwellings in a commercial quadrant of the city.

Saints Stun Seattle in First Win of Season

Published on October 14, 2007 at 10:40PM

SEATTLE-Reggie Bush had 141 all-purpose yards and Drew Brees had his best game of the season throwing for 246 yards and two scores as the New Orleans Saints pulled off a shocker with a 28-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Qwest Field Sunday evening. From the beginning, the Saints had the edge as rookie Pierre Thoams returned a bothced punt by Seahawks punter Ryan Plackemier for a five-yard score to give New Orleans a 7-0 lead. From that point on, the Seahawks had to play from behind and while QB Matt Hasselbeck brought his A game for Seattle (26-43, 362 yards, 2 TD’s, INT), the Saints defense also had a solid game as they sacked him five times and put consistent pressure on the Seahawks’ signal-caller. The Seahawks made a late run, but when trailing 28-17, a 4th down pass from Hasselbeck to Ben Obomanu fell short and the Saints ran out the clock from there. With the win, New Orleans seeks to become the first team to advance to the Super Bowl after an 0-4 start since Buffalo did so in 1992, and only the second team ever. In other NFL action Sunday, Carolina derailed Arizona, 25-10, Baltimore gashed St. Louis, 22-3, Minnesota edged Chicago, 34-31, Kansas City defeated Cincinnati, 27-20, Cleveland handled Miami, 41-31, New England humbled Dallas, 48-27, Green Bay held off Washington, 17-14, Jacksonville smacked Houston, 37-17, Philadelphia outlasted the New York Jets, 16-9, San Diego blew by Oakland, 28-14, and Tampa Bay surged past Tennessee, 13-10. The Monday night game this week features the New York Giants battling the Atlanta Falcons at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.

South Florida Smacks I-4 Rival To Remain Unbeaten

TAMPA-Matt Grothe had 312 yards of total offense and was responsible for four touchdowns as the #5 South Florida Bulls annihilated the Central Florida Knights, 64-12 Saturday afternoon. Just 15 years ago, the South Florida football program had not yet been created and now, in a college football weekend where both of the top two teams fell, the Bulls have a chance to rise even higher in the polls, and perhaps of greater importance may be highly ranked in the first BCS standings which come out in the next couple of days. Additionally, the Bulls’ defense allowed only 145 yards to the Knights who have the potential to be explosive as against nationally-ranked Texas, they amassed 326 yards about a month ago. The tests keep coming for USF as next Thursday they must travel to Piscataway, N.J. to battle Big East foe Rutgers in front of a national television audience. However, little has daunted the Bulls this season as under coach Jim Leavitt, the program ensues in its meteoric rise. In other Top 25 action Saturday, #17 Kentucky stunned #1 LSU, 43-37 in triple overtime, Oregon State astonished #2 California, 31-28, #3 Ohio State smashed Kent State, 48-3, #4 Boston College handled Notre Dame, 27-14 in the Catholic game of the day, #6 Oklahoma got past #11 Missouri, 41-31, #7 South Carolina held on against North Carolina, 21-15, #9 Oregon decimated Washington State, 53-7, #10 USC squeaked past Arizona, 20-13, #12 Virginia Tech blitzed Duke, 43-14, #14 Arizona State hammered Washington, 44-20, Louisville upset #15 Cincinnati, 28-24, Iowa shocked #18 Illinois, 10-6, Penn State obliterated #19 Wisconsin, 38-7, #20 Kansas pounded Baylor, 58-10, #22 Auburn edged Arkansas, 9-7, #23 Texas crushed Iowa State, 56-3, #24 Georgia got by Vanderbilt, 20-17, and #25 Tennessee outgunned Mississippi State, 33-21.

Hawaii Perseveres in Thrilling Win Over WAC Foe

Published on October 12, 2007 at 11:28PM

Updated on October 13, 2007 at 05:36AM

SAN JOSE, Calif.-In a year in college football where parity reigns supreme and nationally-ranked teams suffer shocking losses on a weekly basis, the #16 Hawaii Warriors have evaded this trend. Quarterback Colt Brennan threw a school-record 75 passes, completing 44 of them for 545 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions to lead Hawaii to a 42-35 victory over the San Jose State Spartans Friday night. Behind the efficient play of signal-caller Adam Tafralis (27-47, 302 yards, 2 TD’s, 3 INT’s), the Spartans held a 35-21 lead midway through the 4th Quarter. Nevertheless, before a national television audience, Brennan saved his best for last as he threw a touchdown strike to WR Davone Bess and ran in for another score from two yards out to force overtime. After he hit receiver Jason Rivers to take a 42-35 lead in the extra session, cornerback Myron Newberry sealed the deal as he picked off Tafralis to end the game. This was the second overtime victory on the young season for the Warriors and they now head into their bye week with hopes of moving up in the polls. This would be quite advantageous to Hawaii as the BCS standings will now be updated every week until the end of the regular season. If the Warriors finish in the top six of these said standings, they will earn a berth into the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, or Rose Bowl or perhaps even in the BCS national championship game. In a season which has seen as many upsets as this one has, nothing’s impossible in Division I college football.

Utah College Predictions: Oct.13

Published on October 10, 2007 at 04:52PM

Brigham Young vs. Nevada-Las Vegas: Fresh off of a bye week, the Cougars return to Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas for the first time since their 38-8 shellacking of Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl and seek to win their third Mountain West game of the season against the Rebels. Cougars QB Max Hall (1,760 yards, 12 TD’s, 5 INT’s) is sixth in Division I in total offense, an impressive feat for a player who before this season had not played competitive football for four years. The Rebels, meanwhile, have received strong quarterback play from Travis Dixon who has thrown for 1,259 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. Still, the Cougars should romp in this game and I’ll take Brigham Young in a 45-23 victory.

San Diego State vs. Utah: The potential exists for offensive fireworks in this one as both the Aztecs and Utes average more than 360 yards and 25 points per game. The Utes, under the direction of QB Brian Johnson, really are a better team as they stonewalled the Big East’s Louisville Cardinals last Friday behind Johnson’s excellent performance (nearly 350 yards of total offense). San Diego State counters with QB Kevin O’Connell, who is completing 61 percent of his passes, while throwing for 1,333 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. O’Connell’s primary target is receiver Brett Swain, who averages 22 yards per reception and has snared three scores already this season. Still, I’ll take the Utes because Johnson has proven himself to be virtually unflappable, but once again this will be an exciting offensive shootout. Call the final, Utah 41 San Diego State 38

Weber State vs. Northern Colorado: The Wildcats are riding high, as after winning their first game of the season last Saturday against Sacramento State, they now get to face the winless Northern Colorado Bears at Greeley, Colo. The Wildcats are led by QB Cameron Higgins (495 passing yards, 4 TD’s, INT) who threw for 245 yards and four scores last week against the Hornets and have received 408 rushing yards on the season from Springville High product Trevyn Smith. The Bears counter with QB Mike Vlahogeorge, who has thrown for 606 yards and three touchdowns on the season, against just one interception, and receiver Ryan Chelsa (298 receiving yards, four touchdowns). Still, the Bears are down this season and since Higgins has taken over as the Wildcats’ quarterback, the team seems to be playing better football. Thus, I’ll take Weber in a 28-20 victory.

Southern Utah vs. Youngstown State: First of all, I give all the credit in the world to my alma mater for giving the Montana State Bobcats a really great game in Bozeman, Mont. last Saturday as they only fell 7-3. Nevertheless, they still remain winless and a loss is a loss whether you lose by five or 50. Their next opponent, the Youngstown State Penguins, recently gave Ohio State a pretty good game as in the opening week of the season, they fell, 38-6 to the mighty Buckeyes in a game that was closer than the score indicated. The Penguins are led by Tom Zetts who has completed 61 percent of his passes for 872 yards, but has thrown four interceptions to go with his four scoring tosses, while tailback Jabari Scott has run for 304 yards and three touchdowns on the season. If the Thunderbirds are to have any chance of hanging in the game with the Penguins, QB Wes Marshall must perform better than he previously has this season (one touchdown against nine interceptions) while TB Johnny Sanchez (5.1 yards per rush) must maintain his recent excellence for SUU. Still, it’s too difficult to go to Youngstown, Ohio (virtually to the Ohio/West Virginia border) and expect the T-Birds to pull one out, especially when one considers how accident-prone Marshall has been. Thus, I’ll take the Penguins in a 33-14 victory. Perhaps one of these weeks, SUU can get in the win column, but this isn’t one of those times.

Land use plans adopted

(MONROE) – Monroe City officials held a public hearing Tuesday night to gain input on revising the city’s land use and subdivision ordinances. Several citizens attended the hearing and were in favor of the revisions. The city council adopted the revisions and approved the proposed annexation of over four acres of property owned by Sergei and Susanne Evaschuk at 1300 South 300 West in Monroe. The city council also approved resolutions on setting fees for annexation and land development and the Utah Associated Municipal Power System Integrated Resource Plan in order for the city to be in compliance with state code. The city also approved a resolution amending Monroe City’s Construction Standards.

NFL Predictions: Week 6

Published on October 10, 2007 at 03:17PM

Updated on October 10, 2007 at 10:52PM

After a bounce-back 10-4 week, my record has improved to 38-36, so I guess I know what I’m doing. This, of course, only comes when I take time to correctly analyze the NFL and am able to effectively make predictions. Here goes this week’s prognostications.

Carolina vs. Arizona: Both of these teams have had significant injuries at quarterback. Thankfully, each squad has a servicable option to rely upon at that position. The Panthers have David Carr, a former #1 draft pick who languished in Houston for many years. Nevertheless, with more talent around him in Carolina, he has thrown for 330 yards and two touchdowns in limited action while rookie Matt Moore, an established winner at Oregon State serves as his backup. The Cardinals’ two-quarterback system is now over as Matt Leinart is out for the season with a collarbone injury. Thankfully for the Cards, Kurt Warner has experienced a resurgence, throwing for 580 yards and four touchdowns on the year. However, the Cardinals are playing outstanding football right now and are 10th in total offense and 14th in total defense. Defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has already amassed five sacks this season and I expect him to terrorize the Panthers’ offensive line throughout the game. Carolina receiver Steve Smith will have a huge game, but it won’t be enough as the Cardinals improve to 4-2 on the season with a 26-14 victory as Warner tosses for 280 yards and a pair of scores.

St. Louis vs. Baltimore: The Rams, while much improved offensively, under Gus Frerotte last week against the Cardinals, will in all likelihood regress as they must face a Ravens team that perhaps has regained its edge after a tough win last week against San Francisco. While the Baltimore defense hasn’t been as stout through the season’s first five weeks as it was last season, the Ravens are surrendering just 66.6 yards on the ground per game. With rookie tailback Brian Leonard carrying the load in the Rams’ backfield, it all adds up to a dark portent for St. Louis. Meanwhile, the St. Louis defense has been horrendous against the run, as they allow 146 yards per game on the ground. Thus, the Ravens will be able to run, setting up numerous opportunites for QB Steve McNair to throw the ball downfield to receivers Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams and TE Todd Heap. The Ravens’ offense has struggled in the red zone, but this is a great opportunity for them to do well. Call the final Ravens 31 Rams 14

Cincinnati vs. Kansas City: The enigmatic Bengals, after a bye week which came off the heels of a blowout courtesy of the Patriots have a chance to get right back in the AFC North race if they can beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead. While the Cincinnati offense has been magnificent under the leadership of Carson Palmer (282 passing yards per game), this has been overshadowed by a defense which surrenders 403 yards a contest. Additionally, the suspension bug has hit the Bengals once again as CB Johnathan Joseph was kicked out of the next two games for being caught with the chronic. Thus, a team depleted of nearly all of its linebackers must also deal without a starting cornerback. The Chiefs, meanwhile, average 12 points per contest, which is second to last in the NFL. Thus, if Palmer can operate an offense which scores 20 points or more Sunday, the Bengals should win going away. In the NFL, the name of the game is scoring more than your opponent, and since Cincinnati’s fully capable of this, I’ll take the Bengals in a 30-13 win.

Miami vs. Cleveland: The Dolphins, like it or not, are a team in transition now, and after attempting to block Texans DT Travis Johnson with his head, for all intents and purposes QB Trent Green’s career is over. Thus, while ex-Brigham Young QB John Beck will probably get a start or two later on in the season, for now, coach Cam Cameron is placing his trust in Cleo Lemon. The Browns, on paper, should win this game as the Dolphins average only 19 points and 318 yards per contest, while the Browns average 25 points and nearly 400 yards per game. However, until Cleveland can stop opposing offenses (they give up well over 30 points a game), while they’re exciting, they won’t be able to lay a winning foundation. The X-factor in this game could be Dolphins tailback Ronnie Brown, who under Cameron’s guidance is becoming the east coast’s version of LaDainian Tomlinson as he has more than 700 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns, meaning he’s averaged a touchdown a game. The Browns, as a young team, are not ready to win consistently, so in a mild shocker, I’ll take the Dolphins in a 24-21 win.

New England vs. Dallas: Both of these teams seem to be legitimate Super Bowl contenders, but the Indianapolis Colts lurk in the shadows as a team no one’s talking about at the moment. Nevertheless, the combined record of the Cowboys and Patriots is 10-0, and the stage is set for an offensive shootout as Dallas averages 35 points and nearly 430 yards per game. Meanwhile, New England checks in with 36 points and 428 yards a game. The problem for the Cowboys is Tony Romo’s recent trend of turnoveritis. Dallas is really fortuitous to be unbeaten coming into this game as Monday night at Buffalo, Romo amassed five turnovers and the Cowboys had to recover a late onside kick and have kicker Nick Folk drill a 53-yard attempt to win the game. Against the Pats, such luck will not be available and the Cowboys will have to play their best game of the season to have a shot. New England is just too good at this moment to fall to a team which is improving but in no wise elite. Call the final, Patriots 38 Cowboys 24

Washington vs. Green Bay: The Redskins, after holding the high-octane Lions to 144 yards of offense last Sunday are the real elite team in the NFC East, but they’re not getting any love as of yet. Their next three games, starting here at Green Bay, Wis. against the Packers, may change their current state of indifference in the national media. What we learned about the Packers Sunday night, was while the team is stocked with young talent, when the screws tighten they panic and are unable to function at the high level they’ve shown many times early on this season. The Bears are not equipped to return to the Super Bowl, but Washington is poised to step out of the clear and assert themselves as a legitimate contender. In his first season as a full-time starter for the ‘Skins, Jason Campbell has thrown for 869 yards and four touchdowns, while the aforementioned defense is fourth in scoring defense and third in total defense. The Packers will get their points, but the versatility of the Redskins, which Campbell provides, will send the Pack to their second consecutive loss heading into their bye week. In a competitive game, call the final Redskins 34 Packers 27.

Houston vs. Jacksonville: This, in all likelihood, is the game of the week in the NFL as the Texans continue to defy expectations with every passing victory. The Texans traditionally have owned the Jaguars as they’ve defeated them more consistently than any other NFL team. The AFC South is cutthroat, as the Jaguars, only loss (against three wins) was to divisional foe Tennessee. The Texans continue to torch secondaries with the consistent excellence of Matt Schaub, who has thrown for 1,299 yards and five touchdowns. Because the Jaguars’ defense (surrendering just 15 yards per game) should keep things close, this game should come down to which kicker can deliver in the clutch. Last week against the Dolphins, Kris Brown nailed three field goals in excess of 50 yards, including the game-winner from 57 yards out. Thus, I expect Brown to come through in the clutch once again as he’ll boot the Texans to a 23-20 victory as the Jaguars’ frustrations ensue at the hands of Houston.

Minnesota vs. Chicago: So, the Bears rose to the occasion against the Packers. Big deal. As Lovie Smith’s troops learned last Sunday night, the Packers truly were overrated as not even a first half in which they amassed 341 yards of offense could lead them to victory over the punchless Bears. That victory will prove to be a cruel joke on the Chicago faithful as a look back at Brian Griese’s career in Denver, Miami and Tampa Bay, has no previous playoff appearances. There’s no indication that this sordid streak will come to a halt. The Vikings, while 1-3 have suffered their triumvirate of losses by a combined 13 points. Adrian Peterson (76 car, 383 yards, five touchdowns) is for real and while Kelly Holcomb was servicable at quarterback, the athleticism that Tarvaris Jackson brings to the position should enable Minnesota to throw the ball downfield effectively. Rookie receiver Sidney Rice appears ready to bust out in the Vikings’ offense after scoring his first touchdown against Green Bay two weeks ago and possesses enough size (6’4”, 202 lbs.) to give the Bears’ secondary trouble. This will be a tight game, but I think the Vikings will squeak out a 27-24 victory over the Bears, and once again the scrutiny upon the Bears will intensify at Halas Hall.

Philadelphia vs. New York Jets: This is a game earmarked for St. Patrick’s Day (both of these teams are primarily green) but it will be played in October. The Eagles, coming off a bye, are in better shape than teams with 1-3 records usually are. That’s because with a coach like Andy Reid and a quarterback like Donovan McNabb, panic is something that the Eagles rarely ever delve into. They’ve been in comparable holes to this in the Reid era and have emerged to have successful seasons every year, with the exception of 2005. History is on the side of the Eagles as well, as they are 7-0 all-time versus the Jets. Of greater importance, however is the fact that Brian Westbrook should return to the Philadelphia lineup. Westbrook is averaging nearly six yards a carry for the Eagles and this should bode well against a Jets defense that is giving up nearly 128 yards a game on the ground. I like the Eagles to win, 41-21, and as for whether or not they’re ready to contend in the NFC East once again, let’s just say that the Jets are anything but a good litmus test for a squad, so give Philly another week to make such judgments concerning them.

Tennessee vs. Tampa Bay: The Buccaneers, despite a great start to the season are in a world of hurt in their backfield. With Michael Pittman’s injury last week at Indianapolis, they must now rely upon Earnest Graham to be their featured tailback. Meanwhile, the Titans are third in the league against the run, allowing only 72 rusing yards per contest. Still, the Buccaneers, behind the play of seemingly ageless QB Jeff Garcia (914 passing yards, four touchdowns) should be able to have success passing the ball against the Titans, and I think the Bucs have just enough offense to squeeze out a home victory. Call the final, Buccaneers 22 Titans 17

Oakland vs. San Diego: After shellacking the Broncos, 41-3, the Chargers are back. The Raiders, while somewhat successful this season, are not ready to win the AFC West. As the season plays out, we know just how pathetic the Dolphins are, while the Raiders needed a fluke blocked field goal to beat the Browns for their other victory. Those who were unfortunate enough to watch the Broncos-Chargers game Sunday also realize that San Diego just looked like a different team than they did in all of their previous games on the season. I expect LaDainian Tomlinson to go for 190 all-purpose yards while the Raiders are once again embarrassed and sent back to the bay area with a tremendous loss. Call the final, Chargers 45 Raiders 17

New Orleans vs. Seattle: After horrifically trying to censure the NFL for picking Chicago vs. Green Bay to be on NBC’s Sunday night list, I learned my lesson as it proved to be the game of the week. Thus, while the winless Saints look anything but stellar and the Seahawks are a solid team, I won’t pass any judgments on this one until the game actually occurs. With that said, I still like the Seahawks to win big. Notwithstanding his struggles against the Steelers last Sunday, Matt Hasselbeck is still having an excellent season, as he’s thrown for 1,148 yards and seven touchdowns, while the Seahawks’ passing game (221 yards per contest) is good for 13th overall in NFL annals. As for the Saints, their defense failed to improve from last season, and their offense musters only 12 points a game, after being among the greatest in the league just a year ago. The Seahawks are equipped for a Super Bowl run, and the Saints are not, but because this is a national spotlight game, I still expect New Orleans to rise to the occasion. Call the final, Seahawks 38 Saints 28, although the game won’t be as close as the score indicates. I like Hasselbeck to go for 325 passing yards and four scores in the win.

New York Giants vs. Atlanta: The Giants are back from the dead. After a less than stellar start to the season, New York has ripped off three consecutive wins and against the anemic Falcons, this should become a four-game winning streak. Sadly, for Atlanta, Joey Harrington has regressed to his old ways and an opportunistic Giants defense should have little trouble keeping the Falcons in line. It will be interesting to see if the already magnificent chemistry between QB Eli Manning (1,076 yards, nine touchdowns) and WR Plaxico Burress (24 rec, 410 yards, seven touchdowns) becomes even stronger against an Atlanta defense which ranks 11th against the pass. I think Manning and Burress will be just fine as the Giants roll, 34-19.

Voucher Vote Approaching

(Mount Pleasant) Election day is coming and the drive is on to get people out to the polls. This year will see more than simple municipal elections, there are other hot issues that will be decided as well. One of the key issues is the private school voucher program that was approved by the Legislature and Governor. Opponents of the program contend that it will weaken the public school system. North Sanpete Superintendent Courtney Syme contends that rural Utah voters will play an important part in the outcome. He encourages all voters to become educated about the program and its possible effects on the education system.

UHP Trooper Kelly Roberts was called to the scene and had Rodriguez transported to the Sevier Valley Hospital with unknown injuries.

Runaway juveniles captured

Published on October 10, 2007 at 11:05AM

(ENOCH) – Two juvenile runaways from Sorenson’s Ranch in Koosharem have been caught in Enoch. Just after midnight Monday, Alan Cherkin of Pennsylvania and Travis Cornwell of Florida were found missing by officials who in turn, called the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office. In the search Tuesday morning, a person camping near Koosharem Reservoir reported his cell phone missing. The phone was last seen at 9:00 Monday night. Deputies tracked the cell phone history and found that a call was made near Beaver Tuesday at 8:02am to a Pennsylvania area code. It was found that one of the juveniles had called his best friend in Pennsylvania and left a message indicating that they were in trouble and were heading to Las Vegas. Deputies then called the missing cell phone number and a subject in Parowan answered the phone. He said that he had found the phone in his driveway Tuesday morning at 10:00. Both Cherkin and Cornwell were tracked down in Enoch and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center in Cedar City. The same two boys ran away from Sorenson’s Ranch on Sept. 16, stole a car and were apprehended in Panguitch after UHP spiked the highway. The boys tried to escape on foot but were picked up by Piute County Deputies and taken to the Youth Detention Center in Richfield. Charges are still pending in that case. Cornwell has a criminal history for assault with a deadly weapon and both juveniles had made statements that they were going to steal a vehicle and run away.

(RICHFIELD) A power outtage in Richfield City left approximately 1450 customers without power for at least 45 minutes. Rocky Mountain Power spokesman Dave Eskelson says the outtage affected residents south of the substation on one circuit. The incident began at approximately 7:34 pm. The lack of power darkened Main Street from approximately 200 South to Central Valley as well as residents and businesses. Officers responded to intersections near McDonalds and Walmart after motorists failed to treat the intersections as four-way stops. Rocky Mountain Power crews are inspecting lines trying to determine the exact cause.

Martinez was booked into the Sevier County Jail and is awaiting trial.

Richfield truck driver cited in rollover

(GUNNISON) – A Richfield truck driver was cited Saturday morning for rolling an oil tanker truck on SR-28. At about 6:45am, Michael Patey, was driving a 2000 Peterbilt tanker truck northbound about three miles north of Gunnison when he pulled to the right to allow another vehicle to pass him. A smaller trailer behind a larger one hit the gravel, broke loose and rolled over on the side of the highway. No one was injured in the accident. UHP Trooper, Lance DeGraw, investigated and cited Patey for unsafe lane travel.

Hatch backs permanent farmer relief bill

Published on October 09, 2007 at 04:18PM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – The U.S. Senate Committee on Finance last week approved a Permanent Agriculture Disaster Fund. Sen. Orrin Hatch is a member of the committee and said that if the legislation is enacted, it would provide farmers with sustainable funds in disasters instead of ad hoc disaster bills year after year. He said that even under extreme weather conditions, farmers will be able to continue to grow food, fiber and energy we need to keep America strong. Hatch commented that in years past, ad hoc disaster relief bills often get buried in a circus of legislation and farmers must wait years before any relief comes their way. He said the permanent funds will streamline and expedite the process and help cover losses not currently covered by crop insurance.

County Land Use Planning

Published on October 09, 2007 at 11:46AM

(Manti) Sanpete County is in the process of re-vamping the county land use plan. An initial meeting was held in September to discuss values and other issues directly relating to the future of land use in the county. Among concerns raised at the meeting were that of water rights and grazing on public lands. Residents in attendance suggested that language be inserted into the plan to protect water rights in the county from any kind future Federal oversight. Water rights are currently regulated by the state. The general opinion of those in attendance was that the county should work to maintain the rural and agricultural aspects of the county while also ensuring the financial viability and tax base of the area.

Richfield men arrested in fiber optic theft

Published on October 09, 2007 at 11:35AM

(MONROE) – Two men and a 17-year old boy, all of Richfield, have been arrested in a fiber optic cable theft in Monroe. On the night of Sept. 28, the men were seen using a chain saw and cutting some wire off of a wooden spool at the junction of SR-118 and Brooklyn Road in Monroe and loading it into their vehicle. South Central Communications of Panguitch had left a large spool of fiber optic cable at that location to run under the road and into a junction box. The following day, Deputy Franco Aguilar, saw a vehicle matching the description of the one seen the night before and arrested 31-year old, Charlie Adams, 22-year old, James Johnson and the juvenile, all of Richfield. The boy was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia at the time of his arrest. 38-year old, David Ross of Richfield, was with the men at the time of the theft but claims he was not involved and is currently out of town. Deputy Aguilar is in contact with the suspect with a pending arrest. The suspects had thought the cable was copper wire and took it to Worth Recycling in Sigurd to sell but only received $6.30. Worth Recycling was suspicious about the cable being stolen but the juvenile had been bringing in other items for recycling several times during the past few weeks. South Central Communications now says the fiber optic cable is too short to extend to the junction box and will have to replace the entire spool at a cost of between $20,000 and $30,000.

Elsinore residents treated for smoke inhalation

Published on October 09, 2007 at 10:42AM

At about 10:15pm, fire crews were summoned to the home of 33-year old, Sarah Mitchelle at 325 North 100 West in Elsinore. According to a sheriff’s report, the damper to the fireplace was accidently bumped and closed off ventilation. Fire was reported coming out of the fireplace vents. The residents tried to put out the fire by throwing water on the fireplace which shattered the hot glass front filling the room with smoke. Mitchelle was unharmed in the fire but a 16-year old female and her 17-year old friend were treated for smoke inhalation by EMT’s. No one was taken to the hospital and the home sustained only minor soot and smoke damage.

(KOOSHAREM) – The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office and UHP Troopers are asking the public to be on the lookout for a dangerous man out of Colorado and two juveniles who escaped from Sorensen Ranch in Koosharem. In the first case, a Hispanic male stole a Pontiac Grand Am in Colorado and may be headed westbound on I-70. The second case involved two 17-year old boys who were found missing at midnight last night from Sorensen Ranch. One was out of Florida and the other from Pennsylvania. These are the same two juveniles who escaped last month, stole a car in Koosharem and were eventually found in Piute County. Officials hope the public can assist in apprehending the individuals involved in both cases.

Kicker Becomes Folk Hero in Thrilling Dallas Win

Published on October 08, 2007 at 10:28PM

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.-Nick Folk nailed a 53-yard field goal as time expired and the Dallas Cowboys survived a six-turnover performance by edging the Buffalo Bills, 25-24 Monday night at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The loss proved to be the second for Buffalo this season in which they lost the game on the final play of the game via a field goal attempt. How the Cowboys were even in the game proved to be even more remarkable as QB Tony Romo tossed five interceptions, two of which were returned for scores, and coughed up a fumble. Nevertheless, his resiliency (309 yards and two touchdowns in addition to his miscues) proved to turn the tide in Dallas’ favor. Additionally, the Cowboys’ defense was solid as it allowed only 229 offensive yards to the Bills, as the two picks returned for touchdowns and an 103-yard kickoff return by Terrence McGee represented nearly all of Buffalo’s points. To get a shot at a win, the Cowboys had to recover an onside kick and endure two timeouts prior to Folk’s kick. Still, as it split the uprights, Dallas remained unbeaten on the young season and will return home this upcoming Sunday to battle the similarly unscathed New England Patriots. As for Buffalo, they have a bye next week and hope to pick up the pieces from another debilitating loss.

BLM makes treatment decision

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – The U.S. BLM decided Friday to update their analysis concerning the use of herbicides on public lands. According to BLM Director, Jim Caswell, the decision allows for the use of four new approved herbicides and provides updated analysis on 17 currently approved herbicides as well as some herbicides that will no longer be allowed. Caswell said the decision, known as, The Record of Decision, came as a result of extensive public participation and careful, comprehensive environmental study. According to a BLM report, the use of herbicide treatment can slow the spread of noxious weeds and invasive species which in turn, restores the natural role of fire and improves watershed function.

Despite Injuries, Colts Give Birthday Gift To Dungy With Win Over Former Team

Published on October 07, 2007 at 10:34PM

Indianapolis- What do you give a selfless man who hardly seems to retain anything but compassion for those around him? Well, if you’re the Indianapolis Colts, a win for Tony Dungy is always a good way to start. A day after his 52nd birthday, Dungy’s Colts defeated his former team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 33-14 Sunday afternoon at the RCA Dome. Although tailback Joseph Addai and wideout Marvin Harrison were sidelined with injuries from last week’s win over the Broncos, their replacements filled in adequately to say the least. Kenton Keith, a one-time Saskatchewan Roughrider in the CFL, ran for 121 yards and two scores, while Harrison’s absence wasn’t missed as Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark each snared a touchdown pass from QB Peyton Manning, while rookie Anthony Gonzalez also had seven receptions for 71 yards. The underrated Colts defense also rose to the occasion as they only allowed 177 offensive yards to a Buccaneers offense which has found new life under QB Jeff Garcia. While Garcia threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns, it wasn’t enough as Indianapolis won easily. With the win, the Colts improved to 5-0 for the third consecutive season, and have now won 12 consecutive games at the RCA Dome. In other NFL action, Arizona got past St. Louis, 34-31, Baltimore squeaked by San Francisco, 9-7, Carolina edged New Orleans, 16-13, New England doubled up Cleveland, 34-17, San Diego shellacked Denver, 41-3, Washington decimated Detroit, 34-3, Chicago surprised Green Bay, 27-20, Houston held off Miami, 22-19, Jacksonville humbled Kansas City, 17-7, the New York Giants smacked the New York Jets, 35-24, Pittsburgh blanked Seattle, 21-0, and Tennessee defeated Atlanta, 20-13. The Monday Night game features the Dallas Cowboys on the road against the Buffalo Bills.

Trojans Committ Cardinal Sin in Shocking Upset

Published on October 07, 2007 at 01:33AM

Los Angeles-Throughout a storied NFL career, Jim Harbaugh earned the moniker Captain Comeback for his ingenuity in the clutch which led to numerous victories for teams he quarterbacked. Now, as the coach at Stanford, he hasn’t lost his touch. Tavita Pritchard, filling in for the injured T.C. Ostrander, threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mark Bradford with 2:02 left in the 4th Quarter and the Stanford defense stonewalled USC in the closing minutes to help the Cardinal upset the #2 Trojans, 24-23, at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Trojans were 40-point favorites coming into the game, and hadn’t lost a home game in six years, but that all changed when John David Booty was intercepted by Wopamo Osaisai to quell a last-gasp comeback attempt. Badgers Remain Unbeaten With Win Over Phoenix

Published on October 06, 2007 at 03:56PM

Ephraim, Utah-Soni Sotele and Niu Takai combined for 311 rushing yards as the Snow Badgers maintained their #1 ranking with a 33-13 pasting of the Phoenix Bears Saturday afternoon at Stoddard Field at Badger Stadium in WSFL action. Although the offense suffered some uncharacteristic turnovers and was somewhat sluggish to start off the game, the Snow defense under the direction of defensive coordinator Justin DeCol was stout and withheld scoring opportunities from the Bears. In his second start for Snow, QB Houston Erbstoesser threw for 187 yards in an efficient performance. Additionally, the Badgers amassed 493 yards of offense, and had 24 first downs to Phoenix’s six. The frigid conditions in south central Utah were also a problem for the Maricopa County-based Bears as they coughed up two fumbles which resulted in Snow scores. Next week, the Badgers continue their homestand in Ephraim as they battle conference foe Glendale, which is also ranked in the Top 10 of the NJCAA polls currently. Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. and the action can be heard on KMTI-AM 650 or online at www.kmtiradio.com

Enigmatic Utes Demoralize Louisville

Published on October 05, 2007 at 09:48PM

Louisville, Ky.-In the latest exhibition of what has been a Jekyll and Hyde season for the Utah Utes, Kyle Whittingham’s squad amassed 582 yards of offense against an embattled Louisville defense in a 44-35 win over the Cardinals Friday evening at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. This was only the latest twist in a season for the Utes which has seen them decimate #11 UCLA 44-6, only to lose their first two games in Mountain West play, including a 27-0 defeat at the hands of Nevada-Las Vegas. Brian Johnson, in his second consecutive start after suffering a separated shoulder in the season opener at Oregon State threw for 312 yards and a touchdown for the Utes while Darrell Mack amassed three rushing scores as well for Utah. For the Cardinals, their Heisman-candidate QB Brian Brohm was brilliant in defeat as he threw for 467 yards (361 of which came in the second half alone) and four touchdowns although the deficit was too insurmountable to overcome as the Utes led by 20 points twice in the course of the game. Kicker Louie Sakoda iced the game for the Utes when he nailed a 46-yard field goal with 1:13 left to play in regulation and for the second time this season, the Utes got the better of a BCS opponent. Interestingly, Utah has scored 44 points in each of those instances. Box Score (Final)

Classy Spurrier Ruins Kentucky's Unbeaten Campaign

Published on October 04, 2007 at 09:53PM

Columbia, S.C.-Legendary college football coach Steve Spurrier has accomplished many things of significance at universities scattered throughout the southeastern United States. Nevertheless, as he continues to find new ways to compete at an institution which currently lacks many of the amenities he had while coaching at Florida, one thing remains constant, he still wins. His latest conquest of an SEC foe came Thursday evening at Williams-Brice Stadium when his #11 South Carolina Gamecocks ended #8 Kentucky’s undefeated season with a 38-23 victory. South Carolina defensive end Eric Norwood returned two fumbles for touchdowns and QB Chris Smelley threw for 261 yards and two more scores to stymie the Wildcats. Additionally, the Gamecocks’ vaunted defense, under the direction of coordinator Tyrone Nix, held Kentucky to 388 yards of total offense while their Heisman-candidate QB Andre Woodson was forced into three turnovers, each of which resulted in South Carolina points. Still, perhaps the most interesting event of the game occurred when the Gamecocks’ defense forced Kentucky to turn the ball over on downs. With the ‘Cocks taking over at the Wildcat 15, Spurrier elected to have Smelley take a knee rather than run up the score. On that note, Spurrier won with class which is something he’s getting better at all the while.

Elk hunt opens this weekend

Updated on October 04, 2007 at 05:29PM

(SALT LAKE CITY) – The general elk hunt opens this weekend and the deer hunt officially opens Oct. 22. Kathy Jo Pollock of the Forest Service, reminds all hunters to be prepared for cold, snowy conditions in the mountains. She also said that most campgrounds in the state are open with no water available and no fees and that campers should pack their own trash out of forest lands. Pollock also commented that if hunters are using ATV’s, they should “Tread Lightly” and stay on designated routes and not leave trails, even to retrieve game. She said that even though fire restrictions have been lifted on forest lands, hunters and campers should still be careful with fires.

Elsinore requires garages, not carports

Published on October 04, 2007 at 11:00AM

(ELSINORE) – Elsinore Town officials held a public hearing at Tuesday night’s council meeting concerning beautification issues. The council wants to pass an ordinance requiring garages be built on new homes and not carports for the purpose of avoiding a build up of household items that can be seen from the road. Several residents expressed concern that stick-built garages cost more than a carport on a modular home while other residents said that garages would add value to a home. Town officials said that new homes in subdivisions have garages and they want to make the ordinance uniform throughout the town. The ordinance will be decided on in future council meetings. The council also wants to update the land use code to conform with state code.

U.S. border gets funding boost

Published on October 04, 2007 at 10:20AM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – The U.S. Senate has agreed to a provision that would provide a $3-billion boost to security along the U.S. border. Sen. Bob Bennett supported the measure to be included in the Fiscal Year 2008 Defense Appropriations Bill. He said the bill would accomplish several things including operational control of the U.S. border, four Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and 105 ground-based radar and camera towers. The funds would also be used to construct 300 miles of vehicle barriers and 700 miles of border fencing. The bill would also permanently end the catch-and-release policy by providing a total of 45,000 detention beds at the border and require mandatory detention of illegal immigrants who overstay their visa by 60 days. It would also reimburse local governments who choose to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in enforcing immigration laws. Bennett commented that the American people have asked Congress to make border security a priority and the $3-billion will be a step forward in that effort. The Senate voted last night (Wednesday) 95-1 for the provision.

Lost hunter found

Published on October 04, 2007 at 09:38AM

(FILLMORE) – A lost hunter was found Monday night east of Fillmore. 37-year old, Leon Huntsman of South Jordan, was hunting near the Bald Ridges area about 13 miles east of Fillmore when he became separated from his party. The East Millard Sheriff’s Posse was called out to find him. Searchers maintained contact with Huntsman by two-way radio and finally reached him. Authorities used trucks, off-highway vehicles and foot patrols to get to the man. Huntsman was not injured and was safely taken off the mountain.

Rice Holds Off Late USM Surge For First Victory of Season

Hattiesburg, Miss.-For three and a half quarters, the Rice Owls played magnificent football. Then in a forgettable span of nine minutes, it was nearly all undone but key defensive stops enabled Rice to survive in a 31-29 victory over Conference USA foe Southern Mississippi Wednesday evening at Roberts Stadium. The Owls used several turnovers, a 54-yard touchdown run by freshman phenom Justin Hill and two Jarett Dillard scoring receptions to build a 31-7 lead in the 4th Quarter. Nevertheless, Southern Miss then caught fire and scored 22 consecutive points, but when trailing 31-29, their two-point conversion attempt failed and a fumble by QB Stephen Reaves in the closing minutes enabled Rice to escape with the narrow victory. As time expired, Rice head coach David Bailiff was given a Gatorade shower in honor of his first victory at the prestigious academic institution located in Houston. Despite the fact that the Owls were 0-4 coming into this game, they are now 1-0 in Conference USA and have a new outlook on the season. As for the Golden Eagles, they must pick up the pieces and hope to salvage a once-promising campaign which now finds them at 2-3 for the year. Box Score (Final)

Utah College Predictions: Oct. 6

Published on October 03, 2007 at 04:27PM

Utah vs. Louisville: In the current jacked-up BCS era in which we now live, this is a noteworthy occurrence as a Mountain West team (the Utah Utes) will be on ESPN in this Friday night special. The Utes, when Brian Johnson (completing 62 percent of his passes, 378 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions) is playing, are a much better team and I fully expect Utah to give Louisville a good game. The Cardinals are their own worst enemy as one needs look no further than the Syracuse game two weeks ago in which Louisville surrendered 423 passing yards to Andrew Robinson of the Orange. Still, they responded positively by smacking North Carolina State, 29-10 last weekend and should be ready to evade upset against Utah. This will be a shootout as Cardinals QB Brian Brohm (1,948 yards, 16 touchdowns, four interceptions) should throw for well over 400 yards in this one. Call the final, Louisville 41 Utah 38, although if it goes into overtime, all bets are off.

Utah State vs. Hawaii: Much like their brethren to the south, Utah State has a tall order in facing an explosive offense on the road. The #16 Hawaii Warriors are seeking to promulgate an unbeaten season in which they evaded a close call against Louisiana Tech several weeks ago. Hawaii star QB Colt Brennan is seeking to maintain his usual excellence as last week he uncharacteristically threw five interceptions against Idaho. The Warriors amass 540 yards per game which is good for eighth in the nation and I fully expect Brennan (1,631 yards 15 touchdowns, six interceptions) to regain his stride against the hapless Aggies. Because of the weakness of their opponent and the late hour, no one on the east coast will care about this but I’ll take Hawaii in a 63-7 laugher.

Sacramento State vs. Weber State: The Hornets and Wildcats have combined for one win on the season, so you could call this the “pillow fight of I-AA.” The Wildcats are going nowhere fast, although Springville High product Trevyn Smith (75 car, 298 yards) is proving to be a viable tailback for the Wildcats. While the Hornets have struggled, offense definitely isn’t their problem as QB Jason Smith has thrown for 552 yards and three touchdowns against four interceptions on the season, while wideout Ryan Coogler has amassed 257 receiving yards and two scores. Because Sacramento State seems to have more firepower, I’ll take the Hornets in a 28-17 win.

Southern Utah vs. Montana State: The Bobcats have won two previous games against Utah-based colleges and the Thunderbirds should become victim number three. Jack Rolovich has been excellent as the Bobcats’ quarterback as he’s thrown for 911 yards and six touchdowns against three interceptions. Montana State has also had a consistent threat in the running game with Demetrius Crawford (who has averaged 7.4 yards a carry while scoring two touchdowns). While the Thunderbirds are fully capable of going into Bozeman, Mont. and giving the Bobcats a good game, they’re not quite ready to win these kinds of games and I expect MSU to win going away. Call the final, Montana State 45, Southern Utah 28

Hatch responds to Bush CHIP veto

Published on October 03, 2007 at 03:45PM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Orrin Hatch responded today (Wednesday) to Pres. Bush’s official veto of plans to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Hatch said that politics got involved in the decision. He said he knows that Pres. Bush wants to provide health care for low-income children, as he did with CHIP when he was governor in Texas and he hopes that Congress can muster enough votes to overturn the veto. Hatch was part of a bi-partisan coalition on the Senate Finance Committee that crafted a compromise to continue CHIP for the 6.6 million children currently in the program. The committee wants to expand the program by $35-billion over five years to extend coverage to nearly four million more low-income, uninsured children.

NFL Predictions: Week 5

Published on October 03, 2007 at 02:31PM

Updated on October 05, 2007 at 08:13PM

Well, I must confess that this week hasn’t been so great. My record was 5-9 which drags me below .500 at 28-32. The NFL is hard to handicap, but I feel that this will be a bounce-back week for me. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should be pleased with me because, my mediocre record confirms that parity has even affected me as a prognosticator, albeit an amateur one. Anyway, here’s this week’s foray into the unknown:

Arizona vs. St. Louis: The Cardinals are 2-2, which is their best record after four games since the franchise came to Maricopa County from St. Louis 19 years ago. Thus, why is QB Matt Leinart complaining about sharing snaps with Kurt Warner? Leinart needs to remember that in the NFL, winning transcends all and in the words of national talk show host Jim Rome, head coach Ken Whisenhunt “should keep on doing it (employing the two-quarterback system) until other teams key in on it.” The Rams, right now, are in no way able to stop the Cardinals, regardless of what they do. St. Louis signal-caller Marc Bulger is too beat up to play this weekend, so backup Gus Frerotte will come in in his stead. The NFC West was intriguing this offseason in the regard that no one could project who was ready to contend with the Seahawks for the divisional title. As of right now, this team seems to be the Cardinals, and if they continue to shut down the run like they did against the Steelers last weekend (Willie Parker was held to 37 rushing yards by the Cards) this is a serious contender for a wild-card in the NFC playoffs. Ken Whisenhunt’s system works and Cardinals fans may openly rejoice. Call the final in this one, Cardinals 28 Rams 17

Atlanta vs. Tennessee: Joey Harrington is finally turning the corner in his career and while not as athletic or breathtaking as his dog-fighting predecessor, Michael Vick, he seems to be doing an impeccable job in leading the Falcons. His stats last week (23-29, 223 yards two touchdowns) confirmed that he is capable of excellence. The only question is, can he keep this up? This week, he’ll be hard-pressed to do so as the Titans defense ranks ninth in the league in total defense, and second against the run. If Atlanta is to have any success in this ballgame, Harrington must replicate his previous two performances against the Panthers and Texans, and if possible, exceed them. The Titans, behind the athletic Vince Young are also second in the NFL in rushing offense as they average nearly 174 yards per game on the ground. The Titans are the home team and they have a propensity for winning close games. The more and more I think about it Vince Young is the new John Elway, which means if it comes down to it he can pull out a comeback. Call the final, Titans 23 Falcons 20, and despite the loss, the ATL will rediscover what it’s like to play with passion.

Baltimore vs. San Francisco: This should be a good way for the Ravens to get well after they were ambushed by the Browns last Sunday. Steve McNair did throw for 307 yards against Cleveland in Baltimore’s shocking upset, but the Ravens, with their lack of explosiveness, aren’t built to win those kinds of games. Willis McGahee did rush for 104 yards last week for the Ravens, and if he can experience comparable success against the 49ers, Baltimore can control the clock and run at will. Meanwhile, the Ravens defense should easily contain a 49ers offense which ranks last in the NFL and must now go with reserve signal-caller Trent Dilfer, once a Super Bowl-winning QB with the Ravens. This one won’t be close, call the final Ravens 34 49ers 6.

Carolina vs. New Orleans: Can the Saints do it this week? Drew Brees is my fantasy quarterback, and his less than stellar start has cost me a few games. Thus, I’m not feeling too good about the Saints right now. The Panthers are also a hard team to get a feel for, so let me call this the toilet game of the week. Still, it’s New Orleans that shall be flushed in this one. Call it, Panthers 24 Saints 10

San Diego vs. Denver: Again, the Broncos played the Colts close, but Indianapolis had too much firepower and pulled away at the end. Notwithstanding the criticism they have faced (the Jaguars and Colts are both honorable teams to lose to), they’re far from dead. If the loss at Indianapolis can be surmised in one thing, it’s the fact that the Broncos settled for field goals in the red zone rather than touchdowns. The Colts only outgained the Broncos, 419-354 and Peyton Manning failed to throw for 200 yards. Nevertheless, the Broncos did surrender 266 yards on the ground, which should have Chargers’ standout LaDainian Tomlinson licking his chops. However, while it’s hard to quantify on paper, the Chargers are not right and the Broncos will finally assert themselves on their home field once again. I like the Broncos, 38-24 in this one as Jay Cutler exceeds the 300-yard plateau once again.

Detroit vs. Washington: This underrated gem should be a magnificent game. While the NFL Fact and Record Book is a marvelous resource, and one of my favorite books regardless of genre, it’s not in the Lions’ best interests to read it this week. That’s because they are 0-20 all time at Washington, and they travel to Redskins territory once again this weekend. Nevertheless, these Lions are much different than their predecessors primarily because of the resiliency of QB Jon Kitna (his 1,227 passing yards lead the NFL) who willed the Lions to victory in Week 2 against the Vikings and has been an outstanding leader thus far. The Redskins are no slouches, either as QB Jason Campbell has thrown for 621 yards and two touchdowns this season, while tailback Clinton Portis has amassed three rushing touchdowns. This is shaping up to be a magical year for the Lions, and I think Kitna will set Detroit history as the franchise wins their first game ever in our nation’s capital. Call the final, Lions 31 Redskins 30, in a loss for which Washington should have nothing to be ashamed of.

Miami vs. Houston: I’m not going to lie to Utah-based sports fans in these words. My sojourns into online radio have led me to Miami and Dolphins coach Cam Cameron says he’s not going to pull Trent Green in favor of former Brigham Young standout, John Beck, just yet. However, with every passing loss, this becomes more and more of a possibility all the time. The Dolphins are hating life after Daunte Culpepper, whom they thrust out, accounted for five touchdowns against them last Sunday as the Raiders gashed the Dolphins, 35-17 at South Beach. We spoke of the Lions never winning in Washington, but the Dolphins have never beaten the Texans anywhere as they trail them 2-0 all-time. Matt Schaub’s excellence only continues to increase for the Texans as even without new best friend Andre Johnson in the lineup last week, he threw for over 300 yards against his former Falcons teammates and wasn’t the reason for the loss. He currently has 1,005 passing yards and five touchdowns. By the end of the game, his numbers should be around 1,300 passing yards and nine touchdowns in the air for the season. Call the final Texans 38 Dolphins 20

Jacksonville vs. Kansas City: Good luck to the Chiefs. This is a big step for me in sharing goodwill with my enemies, as obviously the Chiefs are bitter AFC West rivals to the Broncos. Nevertheless, I know just how efficiently the Jags can demoralize an opponent after they smacked the Broncos at INVESCO, 23-14 before their bye week two weekends ago. The Chiefs seem to be flashing signs of being a dominant defense but they must get the Jaguars off the field on third down whenever possible lest they become exhausted from chasing the dynamic Maurice Jones-Drew (33 car., 100 yds, three touchdowns this season) up and down the field at Arrowhead. David Garrard (630 passing yards, three touchdowns thus far) hasn’t been flashy, but he manages the game much better for Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio then Byron Leftwich ever did. I like the Jaguars in this game because they have playoff potential and in all honesty, the Chiefs don’t. I like Jacksonville in a convincing 27-10 win.

Tampa Bay vs. Indianapolis: This is the game of the week. Jon Gruden deserves a lot of credit for resuscitating what was swiftly becoming a moribund franchise on the gulf coast of Florida. Nevertheless, the adroit signing of Jeff Garcia from the Eagles (771 yards, two touchdowns thus far) and his chemistry with fleet-footed wideout Joey Galloway (256 receiving yards, two scores) have made Tampa Bay relevant in the NFC South once again. Cadillac Williams is out for the season after an injury incurred against Carolina last week, but veteran Michael Pittman (30 car., 170 yards) is fully capable of toting the rock for the Bucs. However, they must visit former coach Tony Dungy and his magnificent squad in the RCA Dome where a passionate crowd will be behind their beloved Colts. Again, Peyton Manning is putting up impressive statistics (1,066 yards, eight touchdowns) while tailback Joseph Addai (407 yards, five touchdowns) is quietly becoming one of the NFL’s best backs. Dungy, the ever-classy gentleman will graciously beat the team that gave him his first shot at head coaching in the NFL once again, although Tampa Bay will give them a really good game. Call the final Colts 41 Buccaneers 31 as Manning rips out the hearts of the Bucs as he has so many other opponents.

Cleveland vs. New England: It would be so nice to see the Pats take one on the chin this weekend. The Browns, after smacking Baltimore, can no longer be considered a bottom-feeding NFL team. They’re not a playoff squad, but they have already proven how capable they are of being an annoyance to the AFC’s elite teams. Romeo Crennel, the impetus of the Pats’ Super-Bowl winning defenses (we have no record of the Patriots cheating in their glory days, but the reasonable mind suggests it’s possible that it occurred) will try to stymie Tom Brady and company at Foxboro, Mass. and because of his familiarity with Belichick’s coaching schemes, he may have a great chance to do so. I desperately want to pick the Browns in an upset, but I lack the courage to make the call. However, the Pats will sweat for it before they prevail, 20-17.

New York Jets vs. New York Giants: These co-tenants of the Meadowlands will deal with circumstances comparable to daily life appertaining to the NFL in the Big Apple. This means it’s just as well that the Jets are the road team because when compared to the Giants, they really are second-class citizens in Gotham. The Giants have every reason to feel good about themselves after amassing 12 sacks against an Eagles offensive line which was as pathetic as I’ve seen in 18 years of being a devout NFL fan, (this excludes the two years spent on my mission in case you were wondering). Plaxico Burress (286 yards, six touchdowns), amidst an offense of inconsistency, has been the one constant Eli Manning can rely upon. The G-Men are getting more out of their running game of late as Derrick Ward (73 car, 353 yards) is finding his stride. The Jets, meanwhile were defeated by an NFL quarterback, Trent Edwards, who had never taken a snap in the league before last week in a loss to Buffalo. Thus, I’m not high on the Jets right now, I’ll take the Giants in a 24-10 win.

Seattle vs. Pittsburgh: It’s payback time. The Seahawks, victimized by questionable officiating consistently in Super Bowl XL (a 21-10 Steelers win) have finally picked up the pieces from that debacle and are much better than the Steelers currently. Much of this has to do with the excellent play of QB Matt Hasselbeck (1,032 yards, seven touchdowns) and the resurgence of TB Shaun Alexander (91 car, 353 yards, two touchdowns) who have returned to their 2005 forms. The Steelers are doing well under Mike Tomlin, but they are not quite an elite team in the NFL just yet. The Seahawks are and to the tune of 340 passing yards from Hasselbeck and three touchdowns, while Alexander runs for about 85 yards and another touchdown Seattle should win, 38-30.

Chicago vs. Green Bay: It sucks that flexible scheduling hasn’t kicked in yet because if it had NBC could have selected Buccaneers vs. Colts, Seahawks vs. Steelers or Lions vs. Redskins, each of which would be excellent matchups. However, while the Packers are holding up their end of the bargain, the Bears are not. It doesn’t matter if the Bears have blocked five kicks in four games (an impressive feat for any NFL team) or that Brian Griese played better than Rex Grossman has, the Bears are still losing and now that Griese’s been placed in the lineup, things probably aren’t going to change. Congratulations to Brett Favre for setting the all-time touchdown pass record, but until Green Bay can run for more than 54 yards per game, they’re not a serious contender. They’ll beat Chicago, but it won’t change the fact that they’re still a mirage. Call the final Packers 24 Bears 17 as Favre guts out yet another win.

Dallas vs. Buffalo: See that flexible scheduling lamentation in the Chicago vs. Green Bay game. The Cowboys are explosive, the Bills are not and Tony Romo (1,199 yards, 11 touchdowns) is torching those pathetic secondaries who have faced him and his awesome weapons which include Terrell Owens, (19 rec, 362 yards, three touchdowns) and Marion Barber (6.4 yards a carry, four touchdowns) are running amuck. Who’s going to stop them, the Bills? Judging by Buffalo’s defense (which surrenders 430 yards per game, good for last in the NFL) the answer is no. Call the final Cowboys 41 Bills 14. After all of this meticulous analysis, surely I’ll do better than 5-9.

Bennett's Iraq War speech

Published on October 03, 2007 at 11:43AM

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Sen. Bob Bennett spoke on the Senate floor today concerning the war in Iraq. He commented that many mistakes have been made in the current war but that staying the course and winning the war is a better option. Bennett said that similar mistakes were made in The Revolutionary and Civil Wars and military leaders back then stayed the course and changed strategy to win the wars. He quoted Fellow, Fredrick Kagen of the American Enterprise Institute, who has done an extensive and thorough study of the Iraq war, comparing timelines of exiting the region to the facts on the ground. Bennett concluded his remarks by saying that America’s decision should be to stay in Iraq, adjust military maneuvers and eventually achieve an advisory role with Iraqi leaders.

Hispanic assaults Delta man

Pats Obliterate Bengals, Improve to 4-0

Published on October 01, 2007 at 09:41PM

Cincinnati-Judging by Tom Brady’s performance, there’s still room for improvement. The New England Patriots’ signal-caller threw a second quarter interception which set up a Cincinnati touchdown, but otherwise he was excellent in victory as New England decimated the Cincinnati Bengals, 34-13, at Paul Brown Stadium Monday night. Brady proceeded to throw three touchdowns, two of which went to new acquisition Randy Moss and the Patriots’ defense surrendered less than 300 yards of offense to the explosive Bengals. This was a disappointing loss for Cincinnati as they have sunk to the bottom of the AFC North with this defeat at 1-3 as they trail division-leading Pittsburgh by two games. Next week, the Pats return home to battle the Cleveland Browns at Foxboro, Mass., while the Bengals will have a bye. This is essential for Cincinnati as at one point in this game, they only had two healthy linebackers so the rest is much needed.
