Tax hike Ouch!
Published on August 13, 2007 at 12:56PM
Although some rural Utahans were shocked by their property tax notice, some urban residents are really being stung by higher market values driving higher taxes. Some entities are raising taxes by over 100 %. The Alpine school district is proposing a nearly 18% hike. In central Utah, the Millard school district is showing the largest increase at 13 and a half percent. South Sanpete is at 8.5 , North Sanpete at 7.1 and Sevier district at 5 and a half percent. For cities, Gunnison is one of the larger increases at over 64 and a half percent. Sevier County is seeking an increase of 2.9%. Residents can find some useful information on property tax increases on the website: utahtaxpayers.org. The site also lists truth in taxation hearings.
Taxes Going Up

(Sanpete) Sanpete county residents will be paying higher taxes this year as the first payment on the jail bond comes due. Residents voted last year to bond for six million dollars to build the new county jail. In order to cover the first three-hundred and ninety thousand dollar payment, the county will increase taxes by four dollars and fifty-seven cents per ten thousand dollars of property value. Along with the county tax increase, the North and South Sanpete School Districts and Gunnison city will also increase taxes. Even without a rate increase, most people would see an increase in property taxes as a result of rising home values. There will be a number of public hearings regarding tax increases over the next few weeks.
