EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA- Sandro DeAngelis hit four of five field goals, including the game-winning kick from 33 yards out as time expired in a 34-32 victory for the Calgary Stampeders over the Edmonton Eskimos, 34-32 in CFL action Saturday afternoon. DeAngelis’ successful kick overshadowed what was an impressive performance by Eskimos QB Ricky Ray, who completed 24 of 34 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort. Additionally, the Stampeders were greatly assisted by the strong showing of signal-caller Henry Burris (26-35, 325 yards, two touchdowns) who overcame a week of intense scrutiny after last week’s inconsistent performance against British Columbia to put Calgary in position to win. As is always the case in this battle of Alberta, tempers flared and the action was intense. This was especially true for the Eskimos as a second quarter scuffle, left them without the services of linebackers A.J. Gass and Kenny Onatolu for the remainder of the game. The win was pivotal for Calgary as with a record of 3-2, they’re just two games behind first-place British Columbia in the CFL’s West Division and only one game behind second-place Saskatchewan. Edmonton, meanwhile, slumped to 2-4 and are now in the division basement all by themselves.
