Additional charges have been filed against John Coltharp, the Spring City man accused of kidnapping his children and taking them to a religious settlement in Iron County. One 1st degree felony count of sodomy has now been added to the felony kidnapping and obstruction of justice charges Coltharp is already facing.

Coltharp joined the Knights-of-the-Crystal-Blade, a religious group that believes in polygamy and child marriage. Evidence indicates he and the group’s leader, Samuel Shaffer, married each other’s 8-year old daughters and engaged in sexual married things, according to Kevin Daniels, acting Sanpete County Attorney. He indicated Iron County will be filing similar charges against Shaffer, and there could be more charges to come.

Coltharp remains in the Sanpete County Jail on $150,000 bail and has a preliminary hearing on the kidnapping and obstruction of justice charges next Wednesday January 17.
