SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The suspended University of Southern California football player who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual assault charges has been sentenced to one year in jail.

The Deseret News reports that 20-year-old Osa Masina was sentenced on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in October to three counts of sexual battery after originally being charged with forcible rape and two counts of forcible sodomy, all first-degree felonies punishable by up to life in prison.

He is accused of raping a woman in Utah after a party with friends. The woman said she never gave consent to have sex and was left with physical injuries.

Masina said he believed the sex was consensual.

Masina is a Utah native and played as a linebacker for USC.
