SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a massive wildfire in southern Utah uncovered a man’s collection of scattered underground bunkers stocked with guns, grenades and food in the wilderness.

The Iron County Sheriff said Thursday firefighters battling the June fire near Brian Head heard ammunition exploding and discovered a bunker filled with a cache of inert grenades, explosive powder and many boxes of stored food.

Investigators say they found a Parowan man who admitted to building the bunker and stocking a nearby cabin. He also told them he had seven or eight more similar hideouts in the area.

Authorities say they dismantled the bunkers, which were illegally built on state and federal land.

The sheriff has not identified the man or said why he built the bunkers. Prosecutors are expected to consider criminal charges after the investigation is complete.
