HOLIDAY, Fla. (AP) — Two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay died at age 40 yesterday when the plane he was flying crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. The son of a corporate pilot, the eight-time All-Star quickly got his license to fly despite his wife’s misgivings. Halladay won 203 games over 12 major league seasons and threw a perfect game and a playoff no-hitter during a five-month span in 2010, three years before retiring.

UNDATED (AP) — Georgia remains the No. 1 team in the second College Football Playoff rankings of the season, with SEC rival Alabama staying at No. 2. Third-ranked Notre Dame and No. 4 Clemson hold down the last two spots for the semifinal berths. Oklahoma is fifth, followed by TCU, Miami, Wisconsin, Washington and Auburn.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have dealt disgruntled guard Eric Bledsoe to the Milwaukee Bucks today for big man Greg Monroe and a pair of 2018 draft picks. The 27-year-old Bledsoe had been told by the Suns to stay away from the team immediately after his Oct. 22 Twitter post that said, “I Don’t wanna be here.” Bledsoe averaged more than 20 points and six assists per game in each of the last two years with the Suns, including career highs of 21.1 points and 6.3 assists last season.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots have placed linebacker and defensive captain Dont’a (DAHN’-tay) Hightower on injured reserve due to a right shoulder injury suffered against Atlanta on Oct. 22. A person familiar with the situation said last month that Hightower would need season-ending surgery on his shoulder. Hightower had 14 tackles and two sacks this season.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants have reinstated cornerback Janoris (jah-NOHR’-his) Jenkins from suspension. Jenkins was suspended indefinitely last week for missing a workout on Monday and not informing coach Ben McAdoo that he would be absent. He has 24 tackles and an interception he returned 43 yards for a touchdown in the Giants’ only win this season.
