Arizona Western Stuns Snow in Final Seconds

(Ephraim, UT)—Gabriel Claudio’s 20-yard field goal with seven seconds left lifted 5th ranked Arizona Western to a 29-27 victory over 6th ranked Snow College at Robert Stoddard Field in Ephraim, Utah. The loss knocks Snow out of 1st place in the Western States Football League and blemishes their undefeated record.

Trailing 12-7 at halftime, Snow scored 14 unanswered points to take a 21-12 lead on two touchdown passes by quarterback Shane Johnson to tight end Riley Nebeker and running back D’Arman Notoa. Arizona Western countered with two touchdowns of their own, including a 93-yard bomb that gave the Matadors a 26-21 lead in the 4th quarter.

With Arizona Western threatening to score again, Badger linebacker Connor Taylor intercepted a Bryce Perkins pass and returned it 29 yards to midfield. A few plays later, Snow would take the lead on a D’Arman Notoa 8-yard touchdown run with 4:59 left to play. On the ensuing drive, the Matadors drove the ball 74 yards setting up the game-winning field goal by Gabriel Claudio to win the game 29-27.

Snow’s Connor Taylor led the defense with 19 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and an interception. Quarterback Shane Johnson threw two touchdown passes, while D’Arman Notoa recorded two touchdowns in the loss. Punter Jordan Baumgart averaged 48 yards per punt and pinned two kicks inside the Arizona Western 3 yard line.

With the loss, the Badgers drop to 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in W.S.F.L. play. Snow’s next game is Saturday, October 14th, at 2:00pm against the Pima Aztecs in Tucson, Arizona. The game can be heard live on KMTI AM 650 & 95.1 FM and at midutahradio.com.
