Utah Highway Patrol officers are investigating the death of a 12-year-old who was attempting to cross 1-15 Sunday night.

Officials say the driver of a northbound car did not see the pedestrian and was unable to avoid a collision. The boy was struck and died at the scene.

Troopers are investigating the scene to determine why the boy was in the area and trying to cross the freeway.

The passenger car’s driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigating troopers. Officials say due to the time of day and light conditions, it would have been difficult to see him.

The boy’s name has not been released, but officials say he was from Gilbert, Arizona.
