SALT LAKE CITY – Jayson Rose had eight strikeouts as the Utah baseball team opened a three-game series against USC with a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon.

Utah (22-21, 10-12 Pac-12) took a 4-0 lead before USC scored a pair of unearned runs in the late innings.

Rose allowed one unearned run over seven innings pitched, allowing four hits for his seventh victory of the year. Trenton Stoltz picked up his first career save, throwing the final 1 1/3 innings and allowing one hit with one strikeout. Tanner Thomas also pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Utah was led at the plate by Wade Gulden, who was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored and Chandler Anderson, who went 2-for-4. Hunter Simmons and Ellis Kelly also drove in runs.

After leaving two on base in the first inning, the Utes broke through with a run in the second. Gulden singled to lead off the inning and after moving to second on a balk, Oliver Dunn beat out an infield single to put runners at the corners. Kelly’s fly ball to right field scored Gulden.

Utah took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the third inning. A soft infield hit off the bat of Anderson to lead off the inning was just fair down the left field line and Anderson stole second to set up an RBI single for Simmons. Gulden had his second hit of the day with an RBI triple down the right field line.

Gulden scored his second run of the day in the sixth inning, walking to lead off the inning and stealing second while moving to third on an overthrow by the catcher. A ground ball from Dunn gave Utah a 4-0 lead.

An error extended the seventh inning for USC, with a run scoring on a ground out to put the Trojans on the board. USC made a strong rally in the eighth with two outs, loading the bases after a single, catchers interference and hit batter. The next hitter was walked to bring in a run to put the score at 4-2 before Stoltz got a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Although USC got a one-out infield single in the ninth, a subsequent double play ended the game.

Utah and USC play game two of the series on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. MT.
