Officials are advising the residents of about 25 households in a mountainous community north of Salt Lake City to stay elsewhere after a landslide crushed their neighbors’ home. Three other families in North Salt Lake left their homes under mandatory evacuations. It’s unknown when they’ll be allowed to return. Mayor Len Arave declared a state of emergency and is asking the state for resources to guard against another round of slides. Neighbors said they heard cracks and rumbles near dawn Tuesday. They said the family scrambled to a neighbors’ house, where they watched their home crumble. City spokeswoman Linda Horrocks said geologists are monitoring the ground near the slide.
