(Salt Lake City, UT) — A veteran from Utah will receive a medal for his service that puts him in elite company. Patrick Watkins is set to receive the Distinguished Service Cross, considered the second-highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Army. The 76-year-old Watkins is being recognized for rescuing other soldiers pinned down by enemy fighters during the Vietnam war even though he’d just suffered a concussion from a grenade explosion. Watkins is believed to be the first Utahn who fought in the Vietnam War to receive the medal.
