5 Browns Visit Children's Justice Center

Pianist Deondra Brown toured the Sevier County Children’s Justice Center in Richfield Monday before performing in the 5 Browns Concert. Deondra is an advocate for child abuse awareness, and is hoping to eliminate the statute of limitations for crimes of sexual abuse. Deondra and her sister Desirae helped promote a bill that was passed in the recent Utah legislative session that will allow for child sexual abuse prevention to be taught in Utah’s public schools beginning in the fall of 2015. As a survivor of sexual abuse herself, Deondra said that had she been taught about abuse in school, it would have helped her avoid abuse and find help sooner.

Karen Ashby with the Sevier County Children’s Justice Center said that sexual abuse happens even in central Utah. Out of 55 domestic abuse cases reported in 2013, Karen says all but 2 of them were sexual. Deondra and Desirae have created a foundation to build awareness of child sexual abuse, which can be found at survivingabuse.org.
