A measure allowing Utah counties and cities to register their residents to vote on Election Day has advanced in the state Legislature. The House Monday voted 4-2 to approve the proposal testing an Election Day voter registration program through 2016. Salt Lake City Democrat Rebecca Chavez-Houck sponsors the bill. She says that under the measure, local governments would have the choice of whether to adopt the program. The Salt Lake Tribune reports valid ID and proof of address would be required.

Under current law, voters mush now register more than two weeks before an election in order to participate. They must also have lived in Utah for at least 30 days. The bill goes to the Senate for approval.
