Utah Legislatures worked out a budget deal over the weekend that did not include funding for House Speaker Becky Lockhart’s education technology initiative. Senate Majority Leader Ralph Okerlund told the Deseret News the negotiations “just really came down to what’s the best way to move forward at this point.” Lockhart’s plan called for $200 million dollars in the budget to be allocated to replacing school textbooks with tablets in all public schools. Gov. Herbert threatened to veto the initiative unless the cost was kept to $30 million or less. Senate Republicans had been willing to spend $26 million on the project. A final deal to include no funding for the initiative was reached Saturday evening.
