The Ute tribe of Native Americans is in discussions with University of Utah officials over the future of the school’s nickname. University officials tell KSL-TV last week’s meeting was quote “fruitful and productive.” The school met with tribal leaders about their use of the “Utes” nickname for its mascot and its feather and drum logo. The school previously said it would create a new position headed by a Ute tribal member who would advise the school’s president on American Indian affairs.
