Two Carbon County cities will soon merge into one city. On Tuesday voters in East Carbon and Sunnyside overwhelmingly approved a measure to consolidate the two cities, which share a fire department. The Deseret News reports the cities will become one starting on Jan. 1 and will be led by two mayors and a city council of ten members. That council will select a mayor to serve a four-year term and come up with a name for the new city. The city council would then eventually be reduced to five members. East Carbon police also have a contract to patrol Sunnyside. Utah elections director Mark Thomas says city consolidations are often discussed but don’t usually make it to a ballot or win voter approval.
