The results of the government shutdown has really affected Southern Utah in many ways. The shutdown really hit home for many in the southern part of our state. That includes furloughed federal workers, recipients of suspended federal services and grant programs, and those who rely on tourism created by the national parks. Also international tour groups who were in the midst of their travels had to try to cope with the closures. They are very frustrated with the situation. Many of them are also on their first ever trip to the U.S. Some German travelers had just started a two week vacation to enjoy Utah’s beautiful parks. Now they are scrambling to build a new itinerary for their trip. They are trying to understand why partisan differences in Washington D.C. should affect national parks here in Utah.
