Sixty-six-thousand Utah women are worrying about how to feed themselves and their children. Most of the federally funded WIC clinics that help economically disadvantaged women, infants and children closed their doors on Tuesday because of the government shutdown. Existing food vouchers will be honored at stores, but there’s now no way for Utah women in need to get or even apply for new help. “The Deseret News” reports that 270 WIC employees are on immediate furlough as are 20 staff members at the State Health Department who work with the WIC program and whose salaries are dependent on federal money.
