Flooding near Zion National Park

The Zion-Mt Carmel Highway on the east side of Zion National Park has been closed to vehicles between Canyon Junction and the East entrance to the park. Heavy rains and flash flooding closed the road around 5 p.m. Wednesday. The area also had high precipitation, and flash flooding happened in a ravine about a mile west of a small tunnel, where flood waters blocked a road culvert and undercut the road. Crews will continue to evaluate the damage and work to stabilize the road. There are some east and west routes that are still available for travel. They include Highway 59 from Hurricane to Fredonia, Arizona; and Highway 14 from Cedar City, to Long Valley Junction as well as Highway 89. The park’s visitor center, Zions lodge, museum, campgrounds and shuttle buses will still be open for business as usual.
