With less the two weeks to go before the start of the high school football season, the Grand Red Devils are dealing with extremely difficult challenges after the unexpected death of one of their teammates. 15-year-old Sam Woodruff was preparing for his freshman year, when he unexpectedly died in his home last Saturday following the teams first practice in pads. An autopsy was performed, but it could take weeks for officials to learn what led to the boy’s death. Grand Superintendent Scott Crane said that the district’s thoughts and prayers are for the family at this difficult, sorrowful time. He when on to state that it’s not the district’s policy to discuss student information with the media. Merry Woodruff, Sam’s mother, said her son was somewhat timid as he began his freshman year but gained confidence, in large part, because of his participation in the school’s football program.
