A truck burst into flames on the 4th of July after the driver was arrested for a DUI. Sevier County Deputies responded to a traffic accident on SR 89 in Marysvale Canyon at 5:30 p.m., where they found a Toyota pickup, driven by 20-year-old Tyler Utley of Richfield, had rolled over. Utley and another motorist pushed the vehicle back onto its tires and continued driving, almost hitting several other motorists head on. When the deputy caught up to Utley, he had a flat tire and was still trying to drive the truck. The deputy was able to get Utley to stop and get out of the truck and then arrested him for DUI.
During the accident investigation the Toyata burst into flames. The deputy grabbed a fire extinguisher and was attempting to put the fire out when Utley slipped his handcuffs in front of him, escaped from the patrol car, and jumped over the guard rail alongside the highway. As he went over the guard rail he landed several feet down the river embankment on his back. Utley had to be taken to Sevier Valley Medical Center for minor injuries where he continued to be combative. After being cleared from the hospital he was booked into the Sevier County Jail on suspicion of DUI, illegal consumption, escape from custody, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, driving on a denied license, leaving the scene of a reportable vehicle accident, expired vehicle registration, and no insurance.
