Sevier County Deputies, Search and Rescue, and EMT’s were dispatched to the Piute Canal and Flood Water Diversion west of Sigurd Thursday morning for a truck that was upside down in the canal. The vehicle was registered to 81-year-old James Rulon Despain of Sigurd, who is the water master for the canal company. Despain was discovered inside the truck deceased.

Tracks at the scene indicate Despain was traveling north-east along the canal when he veered to the left while traveling over a bridge. The vehicle hit a small cement structure and then onto the canal bank, where it rolled over onto it’s top and into the canal. When the truck was found, the tires and the frame were visible, the rest of the vehicle was underwater. The truck was found by a family member who had been called by Despain’s when he was overdue.
