The Manti Templars will attempt to defend two of last year’s state titles this week. The 2A state softball tournament will begin with the first two rounds on Thursday, while state tennis will be held on Saturday, both sports that Manti won state in last year. The Lady Templar softball team is the top ranked team in 2A and has been for most of the season while going undefeated within region play. Their only loss to a 2A team was a 3-2 defeat from second ranked San Juan, who was also undefeated in their region. Manti and San Juan are on the same side of the bracket, and would meet in the second round should they both win their first game. The Lady Templars open up against North Summit, while North Sevier will play San Juan in the opening round. Other first round games involving local teams include Richfield vs. Gunnison, Beaver vs. Summit, and Millard against Altamont. Games will be played at the Spanish Fork Complex. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the 2A state boys tennis tournament will be held at Liberty Park. Anchoring Manti in their quest to repeat are defending doubles champions Jeremy Anderson and Logan Lund. Gunnison, South Sevier, and Richfield will also have tennis players in the tournament.
