Pirates Blast Padres in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH-Yoslan Herrera pitched six shutout innings and was assisted by home runs from Jason Bay and Xavier Nady as the Pittsburgh Pirates shelled the San Diego Padres, 9-1 Thursday at PNC Park. Nate McLouth proved to be the Pirates’ most prolific offensive player in the game as he amassed three RBI and a home run for Pittsburgh, while San Diego only evaded a shutout when Adrian Gonzalez belted an eight inning single. With the win, the Pirates improved to 48-54 on the season, while the Padres fell to 38-65. In other MLB action Thursday, Toronto handled Baltimore, 5-1, and took a 7-1 win as well in their second game against the Orioles, the New York Mets gashed Philadelphia, 3-1, San Francisco blanked Washington, 1-0, the Chicago Cubs doubled up Florida, 6-3, Kansas City stymied Tampa Bay, 4-2, and Milwaukee outlasted St. Louis, 4-3.
