Cards Homers Lead to Win Over Pads

ST. LOUIS-Troy Glaus amassed two homers, while Rick Ankiel and Joe Mather added one apiece as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the San Diego Padres, 4-3 Thursday at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals’ proclivity for the long ball was noteworthy because the onslaught marked only the second time in San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy’s career that he has allowed four home runs in a game, the other occurring in July of 2003 against Arizona. Meanwhile, Padres manager Bud Black defended his ace, saying that he doubts Peavy will ever have an outing like this again in his career. Perhaps much of the blame for the San Diego defeat could come from their anemic offense as all of the Cardinals’ home runs were solo shots. Kyle Lohse improved to 12-2 on the season with the win for St. Louis, and has won nine consecutive decisions, the most for a Cardinal pitcher since Chris Carpenter won 13 in a row in 2005. The win improved St. Louis to 54-43 on the season, while the Padres slumped to 37-59. In other MLB action Thursday, Detroit held off Baltimore, 6-5, the New York Mets outgunned Cincinnati, 10-8, and Colorado bested Pittsburgh, 5-3.
