Dodgers Smack Marlins; Head Into All-Star Break on High Note

LOS ANGELES-23-year old Chad Billingsley amassed a career-high 13 strikeouts with no walks and the Los Angeles Dodgers trashed the Florida Marlins, 9-1 Sunday at Dodger Stadium. The win enabled Los Angeles to take some semblance of momentum into the All-Star Break as they posted six first-inning runs to get off to a swift start. While the Dodgers are only 46-49, they trail the Diamondbacks in the National League West by only a game and will have a series against Arizona in Phoenix next week. The Marlins, winners of six of their last seven games before Sunday’s loss enter the recess with a 50-45 record and trail the National League East-leading Phillies by a game and a half. In other MLB action Sunday, Cleveland gashed Tampa Bay, 5-2, Detroit doubled up Minnesota, 4-2, Toronto pasted the New York Yankees, 4-1, Boston edged Baltimore, 2-1, Houston blanked Washington, 5-0, Philadelphia stymied Arizona, 6-3, St. Louis hammered Pittsburgh, 11-6, Milwaukee surged past Cincinnati, 3-2, Seattle tripped up Kansas City, 4-3, San Francisco stunned the Chicago Cubs, 4-2, Texas outgunned the Chicago White Sox, 12-11, the Los Angeles Angels handled Oakland, 4-3, Atlanta shellacked San Diego, 12-3, and the New York Mets torched Colorado, 7-0.
