Ramirez Leads Cubs Past Giants

CHICAGO-Aramis Ramirez provided all the offense the Chicago Cubs needed as he smacked a three-run eighth inning homer en route to a 3-1 win over the San Francisco Giants Friday at Wrigley Field. From that time on, the Cubs were in complete command as Bob Howry pitched a perfect eighth inning, while Kerry Wood finished things off in the ninth by earning his 24th save of the season for Chicago. As for earlier defensive dominance, Jason Marquis had a double hitter heading into the fifth inning before San Francisco’s John Bowker hit a single. The win improved the Cubs to 56-37 on the season while the Giants fell to 39-54. In other MLB action Friday, Baltimore smoked Boston, 7-3, Cleveland waxed Tampa Bay, 5-0, Minnesota tripped up Detroit, 3-2, Philadelphia bested Arizona, 6-5 in 12 innings, St. Louis blasted Pittsburgh, 6-0, Toronto blanked the New York Yankees, 5-0, the New York Mets doubled up Colorado, 2-1, Washington shellacked Houston, 10-0, Cincinnati held off Milwaukee, 6-5, Texas hammered the Chicago White Sox, 7-2, Kansas City pasted Seattle, 3-1, San Diego torched Atlanta, 4-0, Florida stymied the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-1, and Oakland bludgeoned the Los Angeles Angels, 9-2.
