DENVER-Chris Ianetta singled in the winning run in the ninth inning and Garrett Atkins amassed five hits as the Colorado Rockies erased a nine-run deficit to outgun the Florida Marlins, 18-17 Friday at Coors Field. The win was historical for the Rockies as they became the first team to eradicate a nine-run deficit was the Cleveland Indians who edged Kansas City, 15-13 in August of 2006. In a ballpark which has seen its fair share of high scoring affairs, this was the highest scoring game in Denver since 2002, when the humidor was introduced. The potent Rockies smacked six home runs, including a grand slam by Matt Holliday, the third of his career. Although Florida decimated Greg Reynolds, scoring seven runs on seven hits in just over one inning of work, the Marlins failed to hold onto leads of 13-4, or 17-12 after Luis Gonzalez’ two-run single in the seventh. In other MLB action Friday, Boston humbled the New York Yankees, 6-4, Milwaukee smoked Pittsburgh, 9-1, Cincinnati blanked Washington, 3-0, the Los Angeles Dodgers surged past San Francisco, 10-7, Seattle smacked Detroit, 4-1, Baltimore blasted Texas, 10-4, Tampa Bay shellacked Kansas City, 11-2, Oakland bludgeoned the Chicago White Sox, 7-1, Philadelphia tripped up the New York Mets, 3-2, Minnesota decimated Cleveland, 12-3, Atlanta waxed Houston, 6-2, the Chicago Cubs doubled up St. Louis, 2-1, the Los Angeles Angels crushed Toronto, 8-2 and San Diego stymied Arizona, 5-1.
