Tigers Surge Over .500; Dismantle Rockies

DETROIT-After Dane Sardinha hit into a crucial double play, little did he know that he would be the Detroit Tigers’ impetus to victory later in the game. Sardinha’s two-run triple enabled Detroit to come from behind in edging the Colorado Rockies, 4-3 Sunday at Comerica Park in interleague play. The Tigers, who won their fifth straight, went over .500 for the first time all season as Marcus Thames netted three hits and an RBI for Detroit. Additionally, the Tigers retired 17 consecutive Rockies batters to close out the game. Detroit also joined select company historically as they joined the 1991 New York Yankees as the only teams to ever go over .500 (they have a record of 41-40) for the first time in a season at that season’s official halfway point. Colorado dropped to an anemic 32-50 with the loss. In National League action Sunday, Florida handled Arizona, 4-3, while in other interleague play, Cincinnati overpowered Cleveland, 9-5, Toronto blanked Atlanta, 1-0, the New York Mets waxed the New York Yankees, 3-1, Washington held off Baltimore, 3-2 in 12 innings, Tampa Bay outlasted Pittsburgh, 4-3, Houston stymied Boston, 3-2, St. Louis surged past Kansas City, 9-6, Minnesota gashed Milwaukee, 5-0, San Francisco shellacked Oakland, 11-1, Seattle blasted San Diego, 9-2, the Los Angeles Angels snuck past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1-0, Texas smoked Philadelphia, 5-1, and the Chicago White Sox stonewalled the Chicago Cubs, 5-1.
