NEW YORK-At this year’s NBA Draft, conducted at Madison Square Garden, youth was served as unprecedentedly collegiate freshmen went with the first three selections. The Chicago Bulls, winners of last month’s draft lottery went with Memphis guard Derrick Rose with the first overall selection, while the Miami Heat took Kansas State’s Michael Beasley with the second pick. The Minnesota Timberwolves took O.J. Mayo of USC with the third selection, but subsequently traded him to the Memphis Grizzlies for former UCLA star Kevin Love. Additionally, the blockbuster transaction sent former T-Wolves Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, and Greg Buckner to Memphis for Brian Cardinal, Mike Miller, and Jason Collins. In other noteworthy selections in the draft, the New York Knicks went international with the sixth overall pick as they took Danilo Gallinari of Italy, who has ties with New York coach Mike D’Antoni. D’Antoni played with Gallinari’s father, Vittorio in Italy during his career overseas, while former Kansas star Darrell Arthur, a projected lottery pick went 27th overall to the New Orleans Hornets who promptly traded him to Portland for cash considerations. Reportedly, Arthur dropped so low due to allegations that he was suffering from kidney problems, although the Kansas athletic department has vehemently denied this. The Utah Jazz went with former Ohio State star Kosta Koufos with the 23rd selection, while former Brigham Young standout Trent Plaisted went 46th overall to the Seattle SuperSonics, although he will play for the Detroit Pistons because of a previously existing deal between the teams.
